My name is MNfootballfan. You will find me on Friday nights at a high school football game, Saturday's I am at the Bank or if the Gophers are on the road I am most likely at an area football game, and on Sunday's I always watch the Vikings. Granted, my other half (some would say better half) doesn't usually let me attend as games in a weekend as I would like.

I am curious as to what you are all a fan of. I love the Gophers and the Vikings. I want to know, am I in the minority? Personally, I don't see where the problem is. I don't think the Vikings hurt the Gophers. I think the Gophers hurt the Gophers. If anything, I think the Gophers are helped by having the Vikings so close.

I don't mind missing a Vikings game if I have to, but I really dislike having to miss a Gophers game. I will tolerate Dave Lee on the radio, so that says a lot. But among those who dislike he Vikings, they have different reasons. Some people dislike the Vikings because they are fans of some other NFL team.

I grew up loving the Vikings, but I cannot stand Dennis Green and I basically turned on the team because of him. I almost got back behind them because of Tice, but he never really had a fair chance and was in over his head (see: Brewster, Tim). I couldn't have been more indifferent during the NFC championship last season. This state needs a winner and that was a great chance to get it, but on the other hand, they were led by a man who 99% of Vikings fans absolutely loathed for 15 seasons. They chose to dance with the devil and got burned.

I'm an oldtimer and I think the Vikings have really hurt the Gophers. Way back in time, people from all over the state would make special trek's to see the Gophers play...it was big time football. Now those people make those special trips for the Vikings, not the Gophers. Today big time football is the Vikings, not the Gophers. Look at the coverage on TV, the Strib and PP. They get the coverage because they have the viewers/readers.

But the U of M caused some of this....moving to the Metrodome was a disaster. Took college game day out of the equation. Not hiring a big time winning coach (other than Holtz). In general, a lack of support for the program expedited the transistion of support from the Gophers to the Vikings.

As for the Vikings...well I'm old school. I loved the Fran Tarkenton-Bud Grant days. But they're gone...big money via parity is the goal now.

But there is nothing like the excitement of big time competitive/winning college football both for the fans and the campus. TCF is a 1st class facility. If we can win consistently, we'll get support from the average joe back. The state can support both.

Minnesota fans didn't fill Memorial, The Metrodome, and now TCF. I don't buy the "Vikings ruined Gopher football argument".

Perhaps the Vikings did impact the Gophers attendance somewhat, but the NFL is a fact of life to be dealt with. Throwing our hands in the air and blaming it all on the Vikings doesn't fix anything.

I get to every Gopher FB game that I can, usually give away my tix if I can't use them. The resurgence of Fall weddings has really been frustrating the last couple years. I watch every Gopher (mens) BB game and Hockey game I can on TV and try to make it to at least one a year in person for each.

As far as the Vikes are concerned, pro football just doesn't excite me as much as it used to. All the teams run pretty much the same offense and defense, the players whine and showboat, the owners whine and hold taxpayers hostage, the coaches act like they are the only people on Earth who could possibly understand the complexities of football. I love the game of football and think that college football is far superior for football fans. Fans of celebrity of course will think that the NFL is better.

I go to all the local HS games, but it is mostly as a social event and a showing of community pride. I have gotten far too spoiled by the speed of the college game.

That's a good point, there's not a lot of variety in the NFL, where in college, you can see anything from the triple option to the air raid.

There's no question the Gophers have hurt themselves. What I was trying to say was that we're no longer "Minnesota's Team". The Vikings are. It's not unusual to see Vikings flags on cars in Grand Rapids, every rural bar has a watching party, etc., everyone wears purple. Yes alot of Gopher hats and sweatshirts are out there but there's just not the interest there is in the Vikings.

I put my Minnesota flags on my car in the cities and I'm the only one with them on ... including in the cities.

I agree there's not a lot of variety in the NFL. (and all you have to watch are the last 5 minutes anyway). I rarely watch a pro game...but I will if it's snowing (and I will this Monday).

And frankly, I think the sameness goes for professional hockey and basketball. Kids play there's hearts out in high school and college and the skill level in college is quite high. Much more entertaining, more pure sport.

I voted for the first option, but would have prefered a choice. I love the Gophers and hate the NFL.

I hate the Vikings and hope they leave. It's not because I'm a Packer fan. I hate the Packers too. I also hate the Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Denver Broncos, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, New York Jets, Oakland Raiders, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Diego Chargers, Tennessee Titans, Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Chicago Bears, Dallas Cowboys, Detroit Lions, New Orleans Saints, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks, St. Louis Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, AND the Washington Redskins.

All of these teams contribute to hoards of people conducting themselves in a manner not consistent with the Good Book on the Sabbath.

Don't fu<k with The Sabbath!

I love the Gophers and hate the NFL.

I love Saturdays. They broadcast what, 10-15-20 games on Saturdays? All of which have a unique storyline.

I don't hate the NFL, but I am very frustrated with it. I really only watch the players I enjoyed watching in college. For some strange reason, I love the Chargers though.

Go Bolts

From Foxborough, MA... lived there my whole life!

Go Patriots!!!

I love football. I grew up a huge Vikings fan, but pro football is losing it's luster in my mind. A few people have hit on the big points in this thread and others: similar offenses and defenses, prima donna athletes and billionaire owners bickering over the fans' money, and a product that's less football and more sports entertainment all the time.

If it weren't for the opportunity to make money off it, I don't know how much I'd watch. There have been a few times this year where I spurned the Vikings games for the Red Zone channel.

Agreed on prima donna style. However, any game between Pittsburgh and Baltimore never fails to disappoint me.

These are some of the things I don't like about the NFL that shortens the games or adds more commercials.

1) 5 Mandatory TV Timeouts per quarter, plus two 2-minute warning TV timeouts
2) Clock does not stop (it winds) if you go out of bounds unless you are in the final 2 min of the half
3) NFL Blackout rules - Why are only 4 games (on average) available locally during each week? Don't some people want to be able to watch more games?
4) Cutting away from great finishes of games to start the 2-hour Vikings post-game show or 60 minutes because the NFL only allows the network to show a game until 3:15 or 6:30 CST

Sadly, a couple of years ago, college football went to 4 TV timeouts per quarter instead of three, and they also put in the clock winding rule on out of bounds outside of the final two minutes of the half. At least they don't have the two minute warning or no clock winding on first downs...yet.

I love the fact that with the college games I can sit down on any Saturday and choose the games I want to watch between at least 3 or 4 games going on at once during a 12-hour span. The networks also prioritize great finishes, many times switching from a blowout and providing extra coverage of games that are close, even if they aren't even a national TV game.

I love the fact that college football tries to promote its sport and provide the fans with the best possible experience. The NFL tries to suck every last penny out of you to be able to have the best possible experience.

Kudos to the NFL - it can get away with that behavior and is a money making machine, but I don't feel cheated when I watch college football...yet.

It's funny because Sabbath comes from Hebrew shabat meaning Saturday.

Shabat (sic), which is actually spelled Shabbat means "to cease". For Jews, it is from the end of the day on Friday until Saturday evening. For Christians, it was the 7th day.

Actually, if we're getting technical up in here, the Hebrew word is shabbāth, which means "to rest". Hence, a day of rest.

I hate this concept, because people in Wisconsin grow up loving the Badgers and dieing to go to games, but love the packers just as much. If the gopehers won for a decade straight like the badges did during the 2000's the gophers will blow up in this state just like Bucky did in Wisc. The vikes have nothing to do with it.

Also this is why the vikes are good for the gophers. The U of M is not in a college town. This is good and bad on different levels. It not being in a college town you loose out on some fun aspects of colleges in college towns, but you gain a whole major city. If the NFL leaves along with its billions of dollars then Minneapolis as a city takes a hit.

True to past form, Brew, there is not one thing you said that is close to being correct. But keep on trying though. It will happen for you sooner or later. I am betting on later, of course.

isn't there a peta event you need to get to, or a tree that you need to chain yourself to somewhere, or I'm sure there is a Christmas tree that needs protesting somewhere?

Looking forward to seeing the purple moving vans in 2012.

I've done a 180 on the Vikings. Loved them when I was in 5th grade but now I can't stand them and the nfl. See ya ba bye.

Love the Gophs. Enjoy the vikes. I think the Gopher's and Gopher fans have allowed so many excuses over the years, people actually believe the vikings hurt the gophs. All hog wash.

Love 'em both, but the Gophs ALWAYS come first. Wasn't like that a few years ago, though. With the 'business' that the NFL became, it started grinding on me and my love for the NFL. I'm over it, still love the Vikes.. But there's just something about that atmosphere at the Bank that I've missed out on for all those years.. How can I put the Vikings first? Especially when they have players that complain about the field before they even laid a cleat on it and after 90% of the stadium got unburied by their very own fanbase.

Sorry but the poll is kind of silly. How about I like the gophers and vikings; I like the Gophers but dislike the vikings; and I like the gophers but dislike the vikings. It's really only three possible views. Also, I think hate is a bit strong. In any case, I like the Gophers but dislike the vikings. I use to be a fan when they played outside I am now bored with them and the NFL, though I have to admit watching New England play last week was fun.
