Today MV put in a quick plug for Dana Holgerson and Guz Malzahn (sp?). I really had not looked at either, but Googled Holgerson and then watched a few interviews at YouTube. The timing may be wrong for him, but I was impressed. He is currently the O Coordinator at OSU and spent the last couple years with Sumlin at Houston as their OC. In one of his interviews conducted this preseason he was asked about his offense, and he talked about how he felt it worked becasue he believed in it and that he had been involved with it since the late 80s early 90s. If nothing else the guy has a system in place and I really liked his demeanor when he was interviewed. None of the platitudes or bs we have grown accustomed to, just responsive answers in plain english. We could do worse.

I suspect if Brewster had been able to land this guy instead of Fisch, Brewster would not be out of work.

Brewster was trying to get away from the spread when he hired Fisch, so I doubt Holgerson was even an afterthought.

No question that Holgerson's offense at Oklahoma State this year is unreal. So fun to watch. They lost 2 of their best 3 skill players from last year too. Dez Bryant and Zac Robinson. I know Bryant did not most of last year, but still... They had 725 yards against Baylor and it included a fake bubble screen end-around to Justin Blackmon which was really creative and really cool. 69 yard TD run. Check it out at the 15 second mark.

I think it is pretty clear that Maturi values experience with this hire, so I doubt it would happen.

I would love if we had Holgerson running the offense and Chuck Martin from Notre Dame (via Grand Valley State) running the defense.

I do not know, but I searched for Holgerson's name here to see if he had already been mentioned and the only mention I found was an old post where a poster claimed that Brewster had offered Applewaite and Holgerson before hiring Fisch.

His name is staring to come up by in a few posts here and there. I don't know how I would react if they hired him and didn't even interview Leach. I rather have Bill Walsh over Mike Holmgren, you know what I mean?

Oh don't get me wrong, I would have loved if he would have been guiding the Gopher Offense the last few years. The precision at which his offense is run, sure would have been a welcome sight over the disaster we have been subject to watch.

He locked his leading protege in the shed with Mr. James and hasn't been seen since then.

Why get the protege when you can have the grand master himself?

Just hire Leach and don't worry about the anti-Leach people. They will get over the shed thing after one week. People need to stop with this BS the Leach is unhireable. If Mike Vick can become the hottest QB in the NFL than Mike Leach can be forgiven.

If this were a different hire, I would think Holgorsen's name would be near the top of our list. I can't imagine the U hiring a spread guy who has never been a head coach before.

I personally don't have much of a problem with our next coaching being a guy like him, but I just think the hiring would be blasted.

I do wonder, if we are willing to shell out 8 years at 2.6 million for a head coach, and i'd imagine that Sumlin wouldn't get that (1.75 range), if there is any chance that we would be able to pry Holgorsen away from OK St. He makes $360,000 at OK St., but he is in an ideal situation. If they have another dominant season offensively, I'd imagine that he would be real close to being hired as a HC somewhere.

I wonder if offering him $550,000 would be a wise decision. It would come with some risk (losing him to a HC position and it's a ton of money). You might be able to argue how much it would be worth it as well being that Sumlin has been a dominant OC in the past, and that we'd be better served putting that kind of money towards a top notch DC.

I don't know, just thinking out loud here...

I was pretty high on Leach initially, but am pretty sure the U won't take the risk given his baggage. Not sure Leach-light is the answer, but it seems that this guy has had much success, is on the rise, and comes without the baggage or the eccentricity of Leach. Of course he may have other baggage.

Another thing I thought about was that it looks like this guy had a big hand in Sumlin's success at Houston over the last few years. On one hand it is good to see Sumlin hires capable assistants. On the other it makes me wonder how to apportion the credit for Houston's offensive success. In a system that is so offense oriented, should Sumlin get the lion's share of the credit for the success or is this the guy behind him really responsible for the success. Hard to judge given this years string on injuries in Houston. And at the same time, OSU's offense has been hot since Holgerson took over. Anyway, this guy, like so many of them looks pretty good on the surface.

Gus Malzahn would be OK in my book. He'd be about the only assistant I'd be excited about. I thought he'd have a head job by now. It's be interesting to see what Auburn is coughing up for him.

I wouldn't be too worried about Sumlin's ability to coach offense. He was succesful prior to Holgorsen at Oklahoma and Texas A&M calling plays, and they have still been pretty potent this season even without Keenum (top 10 in the country in points and yards).

Less than what the QB makes!

$500,000

I think the fact that Auburn is about 2 missteps away from the death penalty at this point would be a turnoff for Maturi.

Here is video of Holgerson breaking down part of the OSU playbook for those interested.

I would love if Sumlin was hired and somehow brought Holgerson with him. I agree with Bob that Holgerson is a good candidate, but would not be hired because of Joel's insistence on getting someone with HC experience. I have no issues with running a version of the spread. After all of the suffering, don't we want to be entertained at TCF Bank Stadium on Saturday afternoons? I would love nothing more than to have an offense capable of hanging 60 on people...

More on Holgerson. Article today on cnnsi about how most picked Oklahoma State to finish last in the B12 South. Part of the article was about Holgerson's offense and I found this part rather interesting...

But significantly, Holgorsen's offense is more balanced than Leach's -- he actually likes running the football -- which leads us to another important factor in the Cowboys' success. Two years ago, Kendall Hunter was considered one of the nation's top running backs. Last season, nagged by an ankle injury, his production dropped off dramatically, but he's healthy again and ranks third nationally in rushing at 137.8 yards per game.
