Really? Ugh.What does this say about the chemistry of the Gopher women's basketball team?

I don't know the tiers of managementIt sounds to me like you think Maines can hire and fire Whay. Pretty sure that Whay did the promotion but I could be wrong.
I thought so. We went from 12-5 (our largest lead of the night) to trailing 17-19 at the end of the quarter. Is 5 points enough for the word evaporation?
Yes, there are very few Bill Russell types in the world.I don't think anyone is questioning Whalen's basketball IQ. The question is, can she teach what she knows? There are many examples of great players failing at coaching.
It's a decision for Mark CoyleIf Whalen comes back, fine, but if it is yet more of the same next year, then Assistant AD / General Manager Melissa Maines gets fired next year.
I want her to succeed and would be smart if she brought in someone with a proven record of producing success. Like Green of Illinois at Dayton before that.
If Maine assesses Whalen is the right choice, then Maines is fired if Whalen doesn't produce yet again next year.
True. Not sure why the assistant AD would be in charge of hiring and firing head coaches. It's a decision for Mark Coyle
I would be curious to know what the Heyer, Battle and Braun parents think about all this. They had to know that when their kids started this fall that if was going to be a long season. But I wonder if they thought it would be this bad and whether they are counseling their kids to stay or look for other opportunities, especially since they are so used to seeing their girls win.
I agree but. . . .we lost Booth in the volleyball transfer portal to Wisconsin because her father, who played in the NBA, thought of his daughter as a Free Agent more than as a young woman who might have some friendships or ties. She said that she wasn't thinking about transferring until she went home over the holiday break.Stop normalizing the helicopter parenting of adult children.
I’m not suggesting that they are helicopter parents. Neither were mine. But I still valued their opinion when it came to major decisions in my life, especially as an 18/19 year old.Stop normalizing the helicopter parenting of adult children.
Braun had if I recall multiple high major offers out of high school who are ranked in the top 25. After this season am not sure I would as a parent recommend her playing another for Lindsey.I’m not suggesting that they are helicopter parents. Neither were mine. I'm sure nobody left because it is 'hard'.Sure glad to see that there are parents out there who work at teaching values like: "When it gets hard, quit and go try something or somewhere else. That's the key to success!".
Allegedly, according to Scalia's father, Scalia liked Whay and got along with her real well and he had hoped she would stay but she was stubborn. She enjoyed her experience she just wanted to win more. In my opinion this analogy is waaaaayyyy off base. Sorry, pun intended.I'm sure nobody left because it is 'hard'.
if you are miserable in your job, is the key to success staying at your company with the hope it changes or your manager changes?
Again, I don't think this analogy works, Scalia was in no danger of being kicked off the team.Is the key to success when you remain loyal to your company only to have them lay you off?
I don't completely agree with this, I think you need to weigh your needs with those commitments you have made and how your actions affect others. In general the bar here is quite low but you do need to consider how your actions affect others. None of us live in a bubble, those that act as they do set the precedent about the way they wish to be treated. True happiness is growing, learning and challenging oneself not just straight hedonism. It can be part of it, but if not, society breaks down. Don't get me wrong, Scalia and others may have more reasons than winning but going off what Scalia's father said (or Scalia in her post) it was about just wins. The key to success is happiness...
You never owe anything to anybody except to yourself.
First of all... you couldn't be further from the truth.Braun had if I recall multiple high major offers out of high school who are ranked in the top 25. After this season am not sure I would as a parent recommend her playing another for Lindsey.
Battle from what I hear the Dad is a piece of work, and half the reason the brother is not having the season he had last year. Anyone notice he never sits with the other parents at games and never see Jamison at any of the games.
Heyer don’t know much about but would assume she had multiple offers.
I agree I have seen Jamison Battle at multiple Gophers women's basketball games, they seem very supportive of the team.First of all... you couldn't be further from the truth.
These parents like the players were fully aware AND FULLY support their daughters decisions to go to Minnesota and knew it was a building project. Amaya's dad could not be nicer and the reason they sit to the side instead of behind bench with other parents if they bring more than the 4 tickets each player gets. All the parents get a long and you see them all talking before and after games as well as at halftime.
In terms of Jamison.. gets your eyes checked....he has been at to my knowledge of seeing him myself at least 6 of the home games. None of these parents are like the Scalia's whose dad/family was very influential in decisions and in her ear. The cultural change goes all through the program with players, parents etc. All better than it has been at times in the last few seasons.

Whalen has done a poor job over her time here. 3 wins thus far in conference this year and a cupcake non-conference schedule. The bar is low and getting lower each year. I'm sure the parents and players are great, but the fact is this program under Whalen has been a bottom dweller and will stay that way. I'm sure she and her coaches enjoy collecting a paycheck, but we will be back here a year from now as a bottom 3-4. It is time to face the facts, and hire a coach that can recruit nationally and get players that can compete in this conference. The BIG10 is only going to get tougher and we need someone who know what they are doing.I think if the Gophers win a couple more down the stretch and finish on a high note, both parents and players will be ready to put in a solid off season. This team was not expected to be a post season team. There are a couple of games (mostly the wisconsin games) I wish they could have back. Whalen will be back so let’s just hope she gets better as well.
"Don't write it here, it does nothing." Neither does your blind optimism. If the coach isn't responsible for the team's performance, who is? I never expected the team to be great this year, but I did expect to see some growth. Sadly, they're still making the same "freshman" mistakes they were making two months ago.Apparently the Down on Whalen crowd isn't related to Coyle.
Our men drive me crazy. I don't watch because I don't need that aggravation. Ben Johnson may be a good coach or a bad coach! I don't know until the roster becomes stable.
It's the same with Whalen. I don't understand why you suffer through a game focusing on Whalen. Simple solution don't watch.
It's nearly impossible to win with Freshman. But somehow the turnovers, fouls, and poor shooting is Whalen's fault.
Write Coyle with your message. Don't write it here, it does nothing. Or is it I need support for my claim?
Unless something changes in today's game, you'll have plenty of ammunition.
I can't speak for any other "negative" posters, but I've followed the team ever since the Carol Ann Shudlick years, and I have had season tickets since Lindsey's sophomore season at the U. I think I've earned the right to express my opinion. For what its worth, I want the team to be successful, and I think the hiring of Lindsey was worth the risk. But that doesn't mean I'm going to keep making excuses for her in year five.I have been a broken record on the idea that constructive criticism is a part of all fan forums. However, the volume of posters on the woman’s forum goes way up when they struggle which has been frequently this season. I ? how many of these negative posters even care if the woman’s program is successful or is this another opportunity to complain.
Have you coached new players to your program? Your stellar observations made quick work of correcting floor issues so they never were commited again."Don't write it here, it does nothing."
