Just trying to make any sense of not making this a 4 point game.early in the third quarter...

Yeah, it's not like Wettstein is a 50% kicker. He's a 53% kicker!

I'd say that play has a lot less than 50% chance on average of getting the needed 16 yards. When you are in a relatively low scoring game, with a good defense, you take points. If you're down 3 scores and you have no defense, that's when you need to go for broke.

Ranks with one of the dumbest playcalls I've seen in the past few decades.

It was the dumbest call in the history of football. 37 yard fg or a fake on 4th and 17 to the weak side to your QB when you're down just 7. I thought the fake punt vs NW was bad. This was so stupid it makes me lose so much faith in the decision-makers

+100 I laughed when I read your post, and part of me died when I realized I was laughing

Just heard coach Kill's explanation. I didn't like it at all. Have to wonder if he was intimidated by Michigan. He said something about not beating them in 35 years. The team he took the field with today was playing with Michigan. They didn't need to do that then.

Living in Minnesota, I've seen a lot of questionable play calls. This one was just flat out botched. Ask every coach in the NCAA what they do in that situation. About 3 of them say they'll go for it.

No doubt, that was really dumb

We do lots of dumb things but more than anything Michigan made plays and we did not. That scramble 50 yard heave for their first TD by a QB in his 1st game is a play we don't make. That made it 7 to 7 but took all of our team's mojo away. We were never the same after that. The TD catch by Gallon...play we don't make. The catch to set up a TD on a long pass where Stoudimire whiffs on the interception and the Michigan receiver still catches it...that's the difference in making a play. LB Ryan was every where. The run by the QB to score at the goal line...lots of opportunities to keep him out but he makes the play to score. We don't prevent it.

There are a lot of Rallis haters and he isn't perfect, but we will miss him more than many others. Effectiveness and leadership.

Why did/do we design plays for Williams to run side to side? When he goes north and south, he is a load. He just keeps driving.
He needed to carry the ball more going forward.

One thing Jerry does seem good at is identifying talent. People said Williams was a bad recruit. He looks like our best back to me.
Epke was a reach...he had a sack today. Roland Johnson sack today. Lots of these "new" guys who just hopefully need more experience to be more consistent but they already make at least some plays.

We did miss Barker! Is Tufts hurt?

We are making progress. However painful it is to watch.

I posted somewhere else that this reminded me of the time Salem told the press, "There's no way we can line up and beat these guys head-to-head. We'll have to trick them." Can't remember if they were playing tOSU or Michigan when Salem said that.

And I agree with 60's Guy. Michigan made plays and we didn't. Gardner would be the full-time starter for most of the teams in the B1G and they are a shade (or slightly more than that) better than we are athletically.

Nail on the head. Bad enough that they went for it but that they ran it to the short side of the field is unforgivable. That play really made we wonder if this coaching staff has enough brains to get the job done. Oh well, another day in the life of a Gopher fan.

You have to remember that the staff is young, very young..

From inside the stadium I think the reason they ran I to the near sideline was because that was where the ball was spotted. My impression was that try snuck Nelson on the field. Wouldn't have worked to the field side. Alternative would be to call a different play. Something we all wish they'd done.

Play calls like that don't give us a chance later in the game. Our 'trick' plays have been absolutely brutal this year. We are not tricking anyone. Fake punts and field goals with 15 or more to go and we are running the ball? Stop it. You are killing our team and not putting these kid in position to succeed and thatvisvwhatv coach needs to do.

On top of that, why do you have you QB lined up out there instead of someone who is used to catching passes and running with the ball.

The play was run to the short side of the field because that is the sideline that the Gophers were on.

The "trick" portion of the play was that Nelson was supposed to run out of the huddle and appear as if he was running to the sideline. He then stops right before the end line and the ball is snapped. The throw was supposed to lead Nelson (It didn't obviously). That's is why they ran it to the short end of the field. It would have been pretty foolish to have Nelson running to the opposite sideline.

I still (and always will) think it was an outrageous call, but that is the explanation.

The fact that it happened right in front of me made it more painful. Just lame.

It was a good play, just not in that situation. 4th and 3, it would have worked perfectly.

Do we just really not trust Wettstein? He tried that 54 yarder, and that is a very difficult but not outrageous distance. I understand if the ball comes up a few yards short or a few yards wide, but that kick looked like one of the students on the punt-pass-kick thing at halftime (though in fairness to the student, he hit this week). It looked almost like he almost completely missed the ball. And then we went for a fake and went for it on a fourth down on what should be almost gimme fieldgoals. I wonder if it wasn't that Kill wanted to go for it but more that he just didn't think the FG would go in.

He's a bad kicker because he has no consistency. He has some range, but he just isn't very good.

I'm kicking the ball every time on 4th and 16 even with a 50% kicker

That field goal fake I don't care if Kill say's he would call it and stick with it every time, it WAS A BAD PLAY CALL. I don't care
if I don't trust Wettsein the kicker, the right call is to attempt the field goal kick.
Picking up a first down on 4th and 3 is hard enough but when you have no element of surprise on your side and you throw
a short pitch to Nelson, 4th and 16 or 17 just not winning football on that call. Offense came out with great field position and the defense gave them opportunity and they could do nothing with it early.
That pass to Gray he has to find a way to go get that football, not decelerate and actually slow down on the play. Fruechte those balls hit him in the chest and he did nothing with it he has to make the play in those spots.

Coaches can pile on the kids for leaving plays on the field all they want but they had some really bad play calls today too. The play call on fourth and 1 was bad when you have a
245 pound former QB on your side, even if he is playing with half effort at wide receiver you find a way to give him the ball under center there and say kid go make a play.
Going for it on 4th and 1 in a shot gun formation that is 6 yards deep when you need probably less than a yard is not a wise decision when your defense came out playing well. The refs did give the Gophers a bad spot on that play, and they absolutely hosed the Gophers on the non existent pass interference calls on Shabazz#3 and Carter #23 was pushed to the ground by the Michigan guy not the other way. It is hard enough to beat Michigan in a clean game but when the officials are really poking you it becomes twice as hard.
I would have liked to have seen a punt on that play every time. I know they want to give Nelson all of the snaps at QB but why not give Gray some snaps in that spot, getting the ball in his hands can help us win on some of the play calls. especially if you have two guys in the backfield that can be explosive with the football.
Our defense came out playing well and with the field position game going our way a punt was what should have been called. Gophers moved the ball but when it came down to the rubber meeting the road the play calling and execution left a lot to be desired. Michigan has a good defense
but the Gophers were playing as physical and with as much effort as those guys. They have the pedigree, and our guy's need to learn how to be winners, that is all there is to it.
They could have beaten Michigan today. On the breakdown of containment, you can not call that on the defensive backs, that is a Peter play, the defensive line and the linebackers
have to find a way to maintain containment on that play, it was #55 TC I believe that lost containment on that play but the backside guys like Hagemman and Willhite over ran the play and did not stay in there proper lanes either. Give Gardner credit he found a way to make something out of nothing on that play and that play turned all of the momentum there way.
I would not put a lot of the onus for this loss on the defense, the offense let far to many drives stall out today. The offensive play calling on 3rd down has been deficient and a problem all, year
Gophers are way under 30% on third down play calls and execution, this is the Gophers biggest weakness and has been all year. They have to find a way to solve 3rd down offensive conversions.

Totally agree. That play had almost no shot even with flawless execution to net the 18 yards needed for a first down or the 20 for a TD. If you don't trust your kicker and have no intention to kick just keep the offense on the field and run a play. At least you have a shot to get the first down or TD instead of having your kicker try to throw to your QB on the short side of the field needing a ton of yards. Thought it was a terrible call given the situation on the field.

Amen. WTF?

Kill got way ahead of himself and way caught up with trying to do too much as a coach. The reward in that situation was NOWHERE NEAR WORTH THE RISK!!! The reward was an extra 4 points in a one score game midway through the 3rd fricking quarter! If I'm an opposing coach I am way more vigilant of the fake when playing the Gophers. It was ABSOLUTELY unnecessary and unequivocally stupid. It changed the game in a negative way for the Gophers. I love his gutsy go for it attitude, but that was awful and took his team out of a great game!!! Instead of giving his team a chance, he took all the momentum away from them and subastantially reduced his teams chances!!! Let's hope he learns from it. Never seen anything like it. Panicked down 7 with a quarter and a half to play!!! That might honestly be the first time that's ever happened in division 1 football history!!!

Oh well, on to Illinois. A win there and I'm a happy camper. This one's over, it's in the review mirror and all that matters is this week and Illinois. Let's go Gophers!!!

The fake punt against NW, and the fake FG today seem to show that Kill has chutzpah, but if you are willing to take risks like that, why not take the risk of sticking with the schedule for 2013 and 2014 with UNC. It's not a consistent way of thinking. I'm still on board, just pointing out an inconsistent approach.

Because we clearly don't stand a chance against them.
