ESPN: 40 of 99
Scout.com: ** (2 stars)
Rivals.com: Not rated

This cannot be accurate. Does anyone have any updated recruiting information.

Also who else recruited him?

UC-Davis? I believe that school just turned Division I like six years ago or something.

If ESPN gives a grade of 40 it simply means they have not seen them play and are essentially not rated. He was conference freshman of the year while at UC-Davis.

40 is basically not rated/not evaluated from ESPN. Essentially none of the recruiting sites have evaluated him as a JUCO. Everyone is essentially defaulted 2 stars on Rivals/Scout. I'd pay attention to who he had offers from. It seems like Tubby chose to go after Welch instead of guys like Colvin, Smith, Grooms, etc so take that for what it's worth.

If you dig around .... when he began his senior year at Franklin... it would appear that Cal and a host of Big West schools for looking at him.. UC Davis was on him when he was a junior and not many schools looked at him then... perhaps why UC Davis landed him. Seemed to blow up a little his senior year but probably lost in shuffle in California. Guessing he has steadily improved which seems to be why he left UC Davis.. I'd rather have a guy not as highly rated as a junior/senior that is improving and playing well versus a boarderline 100 player that fizzles out (Aliou Kane anyone).

His parents both went to UC Davis. I interviewed him today and will put up a story later tonight. I'm in Mankato for the Division II Tournament.

Regarding guys like Colvin and Smith, Minnesota's interest in them was pretty small. Those names got thrown around alot by fans but neither we're ever seriously considered. Tubby clearly is placing character at the top of his list, especially with juco's. Both Colvin and Smith left there previous schools under questionable circumstances and Tubby just wants to limit the potential for anymore problems at MN.

I'd call Welch's departure from UC-Davis (and in-season suspension) 'questionable'.

He was conference "Freshman of the year", but did not like the style of play. He had very good grades and is a bright kid. He was also MVP in his conference this year. The kid will be a very good addition to the team. find something else to be depressing about.

I assume then that you know the reason for his two game suspension, not much to get worked up about. MN did there homework and has absolutely no worries about julian's character, the same can't be said for the other guys.

Way too many people get caught up with where people played before or who they have offers from. The Gophers could have used Nate Wolters from SDSU this year, and SDSU turned D1 more recently than Cal-Davis did. Hell, the Gophers could have used Ty Nicolai from D3 St. Thomas.

You're correct. I watch some of these mid major players and they would be starting for the Gophers right now. There's a lot of guys who can flat out play. That's why you scout players. You can't get hung up on the offers as if that's the only barometer. Chris Lofton was going to Morehead State, before Tennessee swooped in at the last minute and snapped him up. He turned out to be one of the most prolific scorers in the SEC in recent history.

Agreed - those Wofford gaurds from DeLaSalle sure would have been a benefit to our team this winter.
Also, is Welch more of a Vincent Grier or more of a Bobby Jackson? Or something else entirely?

Yes I totally see what you're saying but wouldn't you call guys like Lofton the exception to the rule. In my opinion, its dangerous to rely on such lightly recruited players like Welch. It's a risk. For every Lofton and Wolters there are a dozen Mavericks.

How can you imply that Maverick is a bust when he was just a FRESHMAN this year? Unless your a top 10 recruit your gonna struggle getting used to the speed of college basketball. Its not always a given that a top 10 recruit won't struggle. Look at Harrison Barnes, he went through some very tough times this year.
If Maverick stays with the gophers I suspect he will be a solid player. Not everyone can be a star.

I think you're missing the point. The absolute best Maverick will ever be is solid. I think its a better idea to rely on players that have more talent/potential than just being solid one day. I'm not saying every kid the U brings in needs to be top 50 but to be honest, there is very little about Welch that excites me right now. Andre Hollins on the other hand appears to be a very promising talent.

Maybe, but I'm more or less saying to reserve judgment until we see him play a few times.
