Weis- next Gopher coach?

Maturi needs to bring in more of an upgrade that Fat Charlie would be.

There are a variety of reasons I think this may happen. Maturi needs to go to Bruininks with a "kill shot" to end the Brewster era prematurely and Maturi may think this would be one for the U. Maturi looks at Weis as the type of person he can get along with. Weis is going to be available within 30 days.

EDIT- clarifying that I don't necessarily think this would be a decent hire, but Maturi might

Dear hot shot- I am a Brewster supporter. Welcome to GH.

Really? You couldn't tell it from this and other posts you have made taken shots at Brewster. But if it helps you get through the day, go ahead and tell youself you are! Is it tough waking up every day know you are such a TOOL?

If those coaches aren't waiting on better positions (Michigan, etc.) to open up, they wouldn't come here if they figure they've only got three years to turn around a program that still has a long way to go.

At church this morning, our minister told us that he had a vision that JC and the Dirty Dozen were coming back to take over the Gopher FB program. His fear was that some posters would still complain. :)

He would be just another good recruiter with no game coaching experience. The self-important savior mentality needs to go in favor of someone who wouldn't be in over his head. :)

The problem is that there really aren't any obtainable 'kill shots' and even if there were, we don't have the money. Tubby was a kill shot, but he wasn't the only one. Flip would have been a kill shot and so would have Bob Knight. Rick Majerus or Mike Montgomery would have been close enough.

There just isn't a list of candidates like that for the football job. Dungy obviously, but who are we kidding?Tommy Tubberville, yes. Are we going to outbid UVa and whoever else might offer? Probably not. Supposedly Chris Petersen is talking to UVa as well. I'd consider him a border-line kill shot. Again, are going to out-bid UVa, Louisville or god-forbid ND?

After that, who's left really? Weis is an OK candidate for reasons I stated above, but hardly a kill-shot. Larry Coker? eh. Does Loyd Carr want back in? Probably not. Phil Fulmer? Please. There just aren't a lot of great choices.

If they want to get rid of Brew, they should do so for the right reasons. Then choose from the more realistic list of Randy Edsall, David Cutcliff or Turner Gill. Is that a kill-shot hire? No. But I think this whole notion that we can only fire Brewster after 3 years if we bring in some legendary coach is silly. If you're convinced he can't do it, then he should be fired, regardless of whether you have a huge name lined up.

This was a good post. I would say at this point I am still not convinced that Brewster can't
get the job done. He still might be able to do it. I think everyone agrees his recruiting has
looked good on paper so far, and the defense has improved (although the caveat there is
there were a lot of seniors on that side of the ball, too.) If he can get that offense turned
around to play as they did vs. MSU consistently, this team could get better in a hurry. If
the offense looks as bad as it did at the end of the year, then I don't know if I can be
convinced he will be able to get the job done. I think we have to give him another year to
see if he can turn the offense around.

Front-butt is another apt term. I would be seriously conflicted rooting for the Gophers if this pogue took over. Luckily it will never happen. Give Maturi more credit than that. One thing that's interesting about the list of "kill-shot" candidates. Not one of them is a person of color. There are some good candidates out there. English, the former DC at Michigan (currently at one of the MI MAC schools, forget which one). Also, plenty of very good African-American coordinators at the NFL level.

Maturi would be crazy like a fox to hire someone from this pool. Scores points on a lot of levels. And there's no way the azzclown media could go after a black coach the way they've hounded Brewster. It would set us apart in the BT, too. As for Weis, the only thing he's proven capable of killing is the most storied program (at least in their fans' own mind) in football and he could probably singlehandedly do a number on the butterknife special at Murrays.

Weis will go back to the NFL if he is s-canned, no doubt about it. ESPN is reporting he has 6 NFL teams interested in him for OC next season. I'm sure he hates the college game now after being at Notre Dame.

Charlie Strong, Def. Coordinator for the Florida Gators would be my first choice.

First, we chose Brewster over him, he may tell us to go get bent. Second, he's about to sign a new deal paying him over $2 million at Florida. Are we really going to top that? Brew doesn't make half that.

Also, I have reservations about him. Namely, he's never been a HC and we're seeing what that can be like now. Also, he's been a hot candidate for a few years now, but never gotten a good offer (he's turned down some lower jobs.) I'm not sure why that is. It could be race-related (he has a white wife which supposedly scared of some SEC schools) but if it's not, then there may be some less obvious reason.
