There are a variety of reasons I think this may happen. Maturi needs to go to Bruininks with a "kill shot" to end the Brewster era prematurely and Maturi may think this would be one for the U. Maturi looks at Weis as the type of person he can get along with. Weis is going to be available within 30 days.

EDIT- clarifying that I don't necessarily think this would be a decent hire, but Maturi might

Okay hot shot..we get it..you don't like Brewster! Your schtick is tiring and boring! Get a life and move on!!

Weis is going to be available within a week, much less 30 days. But the only thing Charle Weis has shown he can kill is a truckload of White Castles.

I think he's another guy who is a great pro coordinator who just isn't cut out to be a head coach, either in college or the pros.

It would be nearly impossible to cheer for the Gophers if Weis was the coach.

If your a Brewster supporter, you wouldn't make such an idotic statement. I'm also sure you have no idea what kind of guy Maturi can get along with being you don't know Maturi or Weis.

Few things I know with absolute certainty. I can think of two.

I will die someday. And Charlie Weis will not be the Minnesota football coach.

This isn't the worst replacement candidate, but it's hardly the best either. The only reason it makes sense is: A) He'd come cheap the first few years since anything he makes pretty much gets offset against what ND pays him and B) Maturi's ties to ND. C) He's proven to be a decent recruiter, but that was at ND.

The reasons it doesn't make sense is: A) He's never proven he can really win as a HC. B) He probably wants to go back to the NFL. C) We don't know if he can recruit to schools that aren't ND. D) The fan base would hardly get excited about this hire.

The problem is that there really aren't any obtainable 'kill shots' and even if there were, we don't have the money. Tubby was a kill shot, but he wasn't the only one. Flip would have been a kill shot and so would have Bob Knight. Rick Majerus or Mike Montgomery would have been close enough.

There just isn't a list of candidates like that for the football job. Dungy obviously, but who are we kidding?Tommy Tubberville, yes. Are we going to outbid UVa and whoever else might offer? Probably not. Supposedly Chris Petersen is talking to UVa as well. I'd consider him a border-line kill shot. Again, are going to out-bid UVa, Louisville or god-forbid ND?

After that, who's left really? Weis is an OK candidate for reasons I stated above, but hardly a kill-shot. Larry Coker? eh. Does Loyd Carr want back in? Probably not. Phil Fulmer? Please. There just aren't a lot of great choices.

If they want to get rid of Brew, they should do so for the right reasons. Then choose from the more realistic list of Randy Edsall, David Cutcliff or Turner Gill. Is that a kill-shot hire? No. But I think this whole notion that we can only fire Brewster after 3 years if we bring in some legendary coach is silly. If you're convinced he can't do it, then he should be fired, regardless of whether you have a huge name lined up.

But the way you become convinced he can't do it is allow him the time for his staff's recruits to mature. I want to see great Gopher football as much as anyone. It's what I grew up with. So while I'm upset with a number of things, there is still much to like. My son and I sat tonight and looked at the defensive losses we'll incur, a subject frequently discussed on this board, sometimes accompanied by dire predictions. It looks to me like there is a lot of reason for optimism on the defensive side of the ball next year. I'm not going to stretch this out into a novel. You guys can toss the names around and see the potential as much as I. Let's give this coach a chance to prove what depth of personnel can accomplish.

I don't want a new coach (yet), but if we did fire Brew, i'd really hope his replacement is Dan McCarney.

Weis should go back to the pros and be a coordinator again. If he can't get it done at a place with the sort of resources, exposure and draw that Notre Dame has, what makes anyone think he'd do any better here? I don't see the logic in firing someone for having a .500 record over the last two seasons and then pay a lot more money to someone who got fired for going .500 at a prestige school.

Let me squash this. First of all, Captain Pudding Pants would never take this job, and second, he would be a step down from what we have now.

A kill shot hire is someone who went 6-6 with a talented Notre Dame team and a soft schedule?

I'm not saying Weis is a "kill shot", or that I would even support him as Gophers coach. I'm wondering whether Maturi would consider him a "kill shot" for this school.

I think Brewster has done enough to warrant staying on and perhaps even an extension. On the other hand, as I've posted before, I think his relationship with Maturi is in such a condition that Maturi may be looking around. The only way Maturi could pull off a firing is to find someone as a replacement that he considers a big name a la Tubby Smith. Weis is probably not big enough a name, but he might be to Maturi.

Captain Pudding Pants is the most descriptive nickname I've seen for a long time. I just can't get that picture out of my mind. Thanks for the laugh!

The funniest nickname for Weis I have heard is "Front Butt."

Jerry Seinfeld has stated publicly that he would take the Minnesota head coaching job if Maturi offered it! He's qualified because he had a top notch long running comedy show on television. The only extra qualifier is that he wants to bring Jason Alexander ("George") and Julia Louis Dreyfus ("Elaine") as his offensive and defensive coordinators respectively. We know that Seinfeld can coach, the only questions is how well will he be able to recruit? Do you think "George" and "Elaine" would try to change the current schemes of the offense and defense?

Would he be able to get an offensive line that could give the qb 10-15 seconds of time to throw?

Seriously Pete. Charlie Weis? Why would anyone even consider this guy?

Similar to that, I was in South Bend this past summer and I was in a bar and a guy kept referring to Weis as "The Gunt" (part gut and part (use your imagination)).

Weis is an excellent QB coach and off cord.period. He would be a terrible hire. What scares me is Maturi is foolish enough to do something like this.

The only way Brewster gets fired is if a Dungy-type is in line to take over (a big name with ties to Minnesota). I don't think it will happen and I don't want it to happen. Give him one more year. As frustrating as the season has been, it has been no different than a normal Mason season.

I would worry that he would bring along Michael Richards and that would hurt our recruiting efforts with African-American players.

Weiss

A rather bizarre post. If Weiss could not win at ND, no one at Minnesota will be remotely interested in this guy even if we had a vancancy, which will not be the case.
