Week 4 Other Games Thread

I'm saying, I'll take players who play like IU's did last night at the "cost" of a #50 class ranking, or whatever it was, any day of the week.

Of course. There are a relatively small number of teams who are capable of loading up on 4 and 5 star players anyway. If you're one of those teams you can use that strategy and it will pay off the majority of the time. If you're not, you have to look for under-the-radar quality players.

I think what some fail to appreciate is that there are more under-the-radar quality players than they realize (especially in football) and a fair number of the highly rated recruits aren't as good as their rankings. I remember reading something about Cignetti's recruiting strategy last season that said he was primarily looking for players who had demonstrated success in college football rather than HS star ratings.

In recent years, we've picked up two FCS players who played very well here and made the NFL as undrafted free agents (Brosmer and Gibbens). Obviously, they weren't so highly rated coming from high school. We also picked up a receiver (from Nebraska) who was highly rated coming from high school but barely played at Nebraska and has barely played here so far.

Watching Cal get 20 balled by SDSU (San Diego is clearly not a state) is less than encouraging
Yeah I uh ... I was kinda concerned about our season at the start as I usually am.

But even that first game I was not super encouraged.

Second whatever, fun tho.

Vs Cal ... nobody could do much right in that game.

Not that the Gophers CAN'T pull it together, but man ..... it's an uphill battle every game from here IMO.

Players also develop/mature at different rates. In Jr. High there was a kid who was 6’1” in 8th grade - star pitcher, RB and unstoppable in hoops. Never grew another inch, and only played varsity FB and was a decent DE.

The other thing that springs to mind, is how hard do they work to improve? A player who coasted on superior gifts while younger, may not have the work efforts of a Gibbens or Brosmer.

Very true! Especially in football.

You can’t forget about Perich’s 2 horrid special teams plays and the fact our vaunted offense put up 14 points with a legit QB.
100% correct.

I was just saying for the defense -- which again, as I said last week, played well enough for us to win other than the terrible 3-man rushes
