Why the Ranking​

Minnesota hasn’t exactly looked impressive, but it wins by simply doing just enough each week. You worry about the Gophers hanging with a team with a clear talent advantage, and we might know a little more next week with a visit to Chapel Hill to take on North Carolina.

Previous: 10

It still seems as if something is missing in Minneapolis. While the defense was stellar, and so was the run game, Minnesota was in a halftime fight with Eastern Michigan — a good MAC-level opponent. Athan Kaliakmanis still appeared to be pedestrian and it’s unclear what the Gophers will do when they face a worthwhile opponent.

PJ Fleck and the Gophers are not particularly concerned with style points, and that’s a good thing. Darius Taylor did rush for 193 yards on 33 carries, but the rest of the offense was very pedestrian. The defense did hold Eastern Michigan to 152 total yards in the win.

#6 in the Big Ten is respectable.

6 is in strike range of 4 too.

PJ Fleck is the perennial "finished #2 in the West" coach. That's respectable and yet would be nice to get to #1 in the West or #4 overall in B1G spot.

Week 3 Matchup: @ North Carolina
Why is Minnesota behind two teams that lost? First off, the miraculous comeback win against Nebraska took a big hit with Deion Sanders and Colorado essentially beating the Huskers over the head with a steel chair on Saturday. Second, the Gophers were only up 10-6 on their MAC visitors at half, as the Athan Kaliakmanis-led offense continues to operate at a subpar standard.

Minnesota has the look of a team still looking to fully establish its identity with the roster, especially on the offensive side of the football. But two wins with a combined 16 points allowed is a fine start for the Gophers on defense this season. They will need the offense to be ready to go this week.

Agreed, he is however top 3 winningest in conference during his tenure so...

Week two result: 25-6 win over Eastern Michigan

Week three matchup: at North Carolina

PJ Fleck and the Golden Gophers moved to 2-0 with a victory over a solid Eastern Michigan squad.
Athan Kaliakmanis struggled with just 117 yards and an interception, but the Gophers’ QB wasn’t needed in the win. True freshman Darius Taylor exploded for 193 yards and a touchdown to guide Minnesota to a win. Sean Tyler added 93 yards on the ground as well. PJ Fleck’s defense did what PJ Fleck’s defense does in the victory as well.

Minnesota faces its toughest test of the season thus far with a trip to Chapel Hill awaiting next weekend.

I've often said I don't put too much stock in how much we beat weaker opponents buy (recall that 2019 was the best Gopher season in a very long time, and the out of conference scores weren't that lopsided). I really don't care about the halftime score against weak competition.

The Gophers defense has allowed just 16 points through two weeks. Minnesota allowed just 152 yards to Eastern Michigan in a 25-6 win. Darius Taylor also rushed 33 times for 193 yards and a touchdown. The Gophers ran for 296 rushing yards as a team, while Athan Kaliakmanis completed 10-of-15 passes for 117 yards and a touchdown. A big test awaits for the defense with North Carolina and elite quarterback Drake Maye, but so far, Minnesota looks like a Big Ten West contender.
