Week 12 Other Games Thread

USC slumbers out of the gate, but once they get it in gear their athleticism can take over. They teeter on the edge and risk getting too far behind but that team has to rank among the top in the country in raw quicks.
Feels like a team that if somehow they make the playoff they get just smoked by one of the upper tier teams.

Still using Grok. Total garbage.

His contract guarantees 85% of remaining compensation which will be somewhere north of $30M depending on if they pull the trigger this year or next.

Chat GPT. It depends on the 50% reduction scenario. Regardless, Smith has been hot garbage which is just fine with me.

Key Contract Terms

  • Smith signed a 7-year, $52.85 million deal running through January 2031. SI+2Football Scoop+2
  • If MSU terminates “without cause,” they owe him 85% of the remaining salary. Sportscasting | Pure Sports+2SI+2
  • The payments are made as liquidated damages in equal monthly installments over the remaining term. Yahoo Sports+1
  • A recent analysis estimates that if he were fired now (2025), the buyout would be about $33 million. Sportscasting | Pure Sports+1
  • More specifically, some reporting shows 62 monthly payments of ~$509,000 from December 2025 through January 2031. Yahoo Sports

Adjustments / Clauses to Note

  • There’s a clause that reduces his buyout by 50% under certain conditions — specifically, because Athletic Director Alan Haller is no longer with MSU, that clause is triggered. Yahoo Sports+1
  • So, due to that clause, the practical buyout MSU would pay could be substantially less than the “full” 85%-of-salary figure.

Estimated Buyout If Fired at End of This Season

  • Base estimate: ~$33 million if terminated without cause now. Sportscasting | Pure Sports+1
  • With Haller clause in effect: That could drop to roughly $16–17 million, assuming a 50% reduction. (Rough arithmetic based on reported $33 M times 0.5.)

Iowas wins were against abysmal teams - just like MN. Crazy the Gophs lost in the fashion they did and insanely damning. Gophs in a real bad place seeing the state of Iowas program.

Iowa probably should’ve beaten Oregon last week. Certainly a limited team, but I don’t think they’re bad this year

But they didn’t. They played them close - something MN should also be capable of. And overall they are just not an intimidating team when you watch them play. Their offense is too poor for that.

I think the Gophers were intimidated by Iowa!

We scored half of the 6 first quarter points Ohio State has allowed all season. Unfortunately we didn’t score anything else over the final 55 minutes of that game.
