First off, Great Ground Game today!

Now the issue at hand.......

Weber........ :(

Thoughts?

That was a poor performance by Weber, but i dont think Gray can be ready for hostile crowds and defenses that OSU and PSU will provide. I think Weber is playing for his job when the Gophers play MSU in a few weeks.

I agree, it's too late to try to get Gray into the system with the 2 next games coming up........

But my biggest fear is that we won't be able to run on OSU the way we could today and that will put the game in Weber's hands which I highly doubt is going to end in a positive manner.......

Weber made under 10 pass attempts, hit Decker only 3 times, threw 2 picks, and fumbled three times. I'm afraid the only way we see Gray is if Weber is hurt. I really question Brewster's coaching when Gray wasn't put in to run at least the final drive, let alone the fourth quarter -- especially after Weber's ridiculous 2nd pick.

Weber is average, quickly digressing to a nobody. It's time to invest in youth. But hey, at least whaley is playing, and playing well.

Gray

Why not play Gray Saturday, he could do any worse?

If Brew & Co. didn't play Gray today with Weber doing horribly *AND* with a 35-13 lead at the time then I would bet my house they don't let him see more then 2 snaps against Ohio State *AT* Ohio State in that hostile environment.......

Gold04 you took the words out of my mouth. How could Gray be any worse. The only pass he attempts is a difficult deep throw while on the run and he almost completed it AGAINST the WIND. Why not give him a short pass to start off with, Jedd? Why not give Gray the last two drives? You Weber guys are always saying how Gray isn't doing it in practice and the coaches know best. Well, I've been crying for Whaley all year and he finally gets a chance, and guess what? He's our best back. We never use Stoudemier so put him at safety. He makes great plays on special forces. As for Weber, he has sadly digressed to the point he is worse than even I had ever imagined he could be. If Gray is worse than Weber right now, we might as well put Alipate in there. I mean seriously, how could he be worse??? Weber was heartedly criticized by our WCCO homer radio crew. He starts every game by not being able to complete easy throws. He fumbles. At least against an inferior foe he was able to run. If Purdue hadn't handed this game to us, we would have lost with Weber's play. Take away Decker and Weber would be really pathetic. Even the pass where Decker was wide open he had to slow down to catch the pass. I was watching the junior qb from Russia last night for Wayzata, and all his throws were on the fingertips of a streaking receiver. Alas and alack.

Today was a great opportunity to get Grey some playing time in the 4th Qtr. Weber will be the QB, but ith a big lead in the 4th Grey should have gotten some work. This was a way to bring Grey along without throwing him into the fire if something happens to Weber. It was a great time to tell Weber "we got the lead, take the rest of the day off" He feels good and we accomplish getting #5 some experience.

I would *REALLY* want a Weber supporter to respond to this......

After watching the last couple of weeks and our secondary, I think I kind of understand Webers problem. Our secondary does not watchtheQB and break on the ball. With the receivers so open it's no wonder Weber is lost in agame. He's not used to having anyone covered, he just throws.

I've never seen him play in person, but from what I hear, Gray is still inconsistent and struggles retaining the "complexities" of the offense. I was high on Gray when he signed, but now it's time to put those 4-stars to work. Also, this is a great thread. It should NOT be over-looked that Weber struggled immensely against a poor defense today. This isn't good. How the hell do you got from a top three Big 10 QB to a bottom three?

I am not a Weber supporter by any means, probably the opposite, butI would hate to throw Grey into a situation where things have a good chance of not going well and screwup his head. Like I said before bring him along in the right situations and everything will take care of itself. I'm Afraid that is what the coaches are afraid of, Grey getting put in in good situations and getting his confidence and then they have a QB cotroversy. Grey should have hadmostofthe 4th Qtr today.

That's what I'm saying, the situation was perfect to get Gray in the 4th Quarter and for some reason Brew kept Weber in and he threw an Interception his first pass in the 4th.......

Today's situation was a perfect reason to play Gray and it *STILL* didn't happen, I don't think anything short of an injury (hope it doesn't happen tho) would get Gray on the field for more then 2 or 3 plays a game.......

The Wayzata coach plays his backup the 3rd series of every game. Why? To give him experience in case he is thrown in there.

Brew can't even throw Gray out there in take-a-knee time. Brew is a stubborn fool.

It's a tough spot to be in with your veteran QB regressing and apparently nobody ready to step up. BTW, Illinois played the quarterback shuffle today and the results weren't good. The best path right now might be to stick with Weber and keep revving up the running game.

I agree totally with not throwing Gray in against the Buckeyes or Nittany Lions, but goooood lord these next few games are going to be horrific. If you can't handle Purdue's D then good luck at the shoe.

The 4th Quarter was our chance to finally see what Gray could do and Brew still didn't pull Weber......

What happened? Weber throws an INT, Purdue scores and Weber has to stay in for "Veteran" reasons, smh.......

i know i'll get ragged for not giving my source but i heard from talking to a player that gray was getting his chance in practice this week but he had a really bad practice and that's why you aren't seeing him more right now...i don't want to see him out there for good these next 2 weeks, i do want to see him come in to give the D another look but his time should be once we get back home...

Overall upchurch you make some nice points, but I have some thoughts about some parts of your rant.
The only pass he attempts is a difficult deep throw while on the run and he almost completed it AGAINST the WIND. Why not give him a short pass to start off with, Jedd?
He had a wide open receiver on a shorter route but couldn't make that throw b/c of the pressure he was escaping from. That long throw was all he had available to him.

Um, he was hurt. He didn't play early in the season because he had a turf toe injury. Since being available he's shown something but it's not like they've been stashing him on the bench since he's been healthy.

I agree that it would have been good to see Gray in the 4th quarter. Weber's terrible 2nd INT killed that. At that point it was win the game no matter what time and if you noticed, all we did from that point on was run. I suppose we could have Gray handing the ball off instead, but I'm confused how that gives him any experience.

Weber has put himself on the edge. If Gray shows anything more in practice he could very well jump ahead of Weber. I just wouldn't expect it on the road at PSU or OSU.

OK, let me get this straight. Gray isn't able to pick up the offense in practice. We know Weber is playing badly. None of the receivers van run a route. The O Line never gets into position to block. Is this a talent issue or a coaching issue?

Most "Weber supporters" keep saying that Gray isn't playing because of what he is showing in practice; I don't think too many people who are watching are claiming Weber has done a good job. As a matter of fact, watching Weber makes me think Gray might be further behind than anyone thinks. That could be as plausible as suggesting the Gophers start emulating the Wayzata high school team. That said, I was expecting Gray sometime at the end of the game. A more valid criticism is the waste of a redshirt year for Gray.

Which receivers are you referring to? Decker runs great routes which is why he's open so consistently. And I've seen plenty of other good routes being run by Green, Stoudemier, Tow-Arnett. Weber not hitting them doesn't mean the route was bad. And the O-Line had a pretty good game (I know this because we rushed for over 200 yards). So of your 4 complaints, only 2 seem to hold water. Is this a vision issue or a problem with overreacting to the most comfortable win of the season?

If folks are going to go negative maybe they should try to stick to things worth being negative about (i.e. Weber's poor play or the D's inability to defend the pass).

I would have liked to see Gray get a series in the 4th quarter. And it is a bit worrisome that Webber forced it to Decker, throwing into a triple team and getting it picked off on the Purdue 20. I think if Webber is going to have a good year he's going to have to come up big against Penn State. You notice that Weber was much more confident when Fisch called some designed runs for him. Weber derives confidence from moving the chains with his feet. Hopefully he puts it together this week.

A more valid criticism is the waste of a redshirt year for Gray.
Better take a mulligan on that idea, my friend.

Who would you have as your back-up QB if Gray redshirts? Alipate? Lueck? Bring Pittman in? Trade for a junior back-up? ...

I think his point was that we've never been in position to use a backup this season and they could have preserved Gray's redshirt by keeping him on the bench unless needed. If Weber got hurt they could yank the RS and play him.

I think the answer would be that they had confidence in Gray to continue to improve and be worthy of multiple plays per game. Apparently that isn't working out as planned.

The biggest problem I see right now is that Weber still has another year left. What is Brewster going to do, bench him? I can't put up with another year of Adam Weber. He's the worst QB in the Big Ten, and that's pretty bad.

There is absolutely no possible way we will be competitive against OSU and PSU with Weber playing like he did today! Its sickening and I cannot fathom Weber leading us to victory after todays performance!!

These stats are what you'd expect to see from a backup QB on the road in the Big Ten, not from a 3rd year starter at home against a 1-5 team. Whether Gray is struggling or not, he's our backup and is one hit away from running our offense. When you're up by a few scores in the 4th quarter, you PLAY your backup! Maybe a little game experience will help get the practice objectives across.
