I do not live in MN and rather than watching big games at home where I would most likely teach my son some words that start with F and C and B and others, I end up walking to the dive bar around the corner. Inevitably, I am the only one in there paying any attention to the Gophers at the start of the game and to make up for my shouting words that start with F and C and B and others, I usually buy a round of drinks or two. This has gotten the regulars to start cheering for MN as they know if I have had enough and we are winning, a simple, "Go Gophers!!" usually elicits a free beer.
To create an even greater MN atmosphere I fill the juke box with a few hours worth of songs sung by MN artists. A good loop of Dylan, Prince, Replacements, Husker Du, Mason Jennings.
Anyway, the whole bar usually breaks into song whenever Prince's When Doves Cry or Dylan's Like a Rolling Stone come on. It got me thinking that we as Minnesotans need to embrace these songs. Screw the never-ending search for a trendy hip-hop song to play during our games. We roll with what we made, and we've made some good songs.
End of third quarter, we start The Great MN Singalong. Dylan's Like a Rolling Stone blasts in the stadium and the words are displayed at the bottom of the scoreboard with the little white ball skipping from word to word and all 50, 40, 35 thousand of us break out into song.
Beats this stupid what did the squirrel say song that is usually playing in my home when I stumble back home. To think we would play that over any of our MN guys is an effing csing decision if I've ever heard one.
