University of Minnesota sophomore two-sport athlete Bryant Allen plans to transfer to a school closer to home, according to Allen's high school football coach, Brandon Gregory.
Gregory, Allen's coach at Maplewood Richmond Heights High School in suburban St. Louis, said Allen told the Gophers today that he would be leaving for personal reasons. Allen, who caught 16 passes for 202 yards and a touchdown this season, also was a basketball walk-on last season but not this season.
"(Allen) told me he wanted to be closer to home and closer to his son," Gregory said, recounting his phone conversation today with Allen. "It was the reality of being that far away from family and things like that kind of kicked in. He didn't have anything bad to say."
The 6-foot, 160-pound Allen started three games at receiver in 2010 and was the Gophers' leading punt returner, with four for 49 yards.
Losing Allen would be a blow to new Gophers football coach Jerry Kill, who lacks returning depth at receiver. Kill told the Pioneer Press on Thursday that sophomore MarQueis Gray would move from receiver to quarterback; Gray was second on the team in receiving with 42 catches for 587 yards and five touchdowns this season. Junior Da'Jon McKnight (48 catches, 750 yards and 10 touchdowns) would be the only returning wide receiver with more than one catch in 2010.
"He has a lot of good football left in him," Gregory said. "That's the most athletic kid I've ever seen. I'm not sure exactly what's going on, but I hope he's not just through with football."
Allen was a three-sport athlete in high school. He was a record-setting receiver and return specialist in football. Allen also was the St. Louis Post-Dispatch basketball player of the year while leading his high school team to the 2008 state title, and he won a state title in 300-meter hurdles in track.
