Interesting. I would've laughed three weeks ago, but things have changed and his star is rising. Doesn't meet successful HC requirement publicly set though. Why not Gus Malzahn? To me he'd be the slam dunk coordinator who'd have credibility on the recruiting trail nationwide.

Maybe Gus Malzahn is still in the mix, it is hard to tell with people who are coaching this weekend.

I'd rather have Malzahn over Chryst. Call me petty, but I just hate WI that much.

I posted this on another thread. Likely Maturi will have to release the names of "finalists" for the job. It's likely they'll release two names, one being the hire and the other being a coordinator from somewhere who nobody will be mad at for trying for a promotion. Chryst may be that coordinator.

You wouldn't want to release the name of a head coach who was a finalist but didn't get the offer because it undermines his credibility at his current gig.

As bad as Trestman, though not necessarily his fault. We have said we want a proven head coach. He is not. Our dithering AD has said he will do better this time. Yet he will fix his prior mistake by hiring his close personal friend? Please. And last, but not least, he is a Badger. This is not acceptable. Not at this time. Not with this AD.

Is this just a courtesy interview? I know he and Maturi are friends. this just helps Chryst down the road when he can say he interviewed for a Big 10 job

So malzahn would be the slam dunk on the recruiting trail because he was a High School head coach 4 years ago?

Yes, Maturi would put himself in a very bad spot (would look terrible for him, given his stated criteria) if he moves forward with Chryst.

I don't hate Wisconsin - I hate getting our ass KICKED by Wisconsin. If Chryst can turn this program around and help us beat our neighbors, then bring him on! We have 2 million good reasons why he should want to come here. Ski U Mah!

Well, apparently alone, I will say a Chryst hire would be good for the Gophs and bad for the Badgers.

That's a brilliant call!! Family friend taking the bullet for the former Associate AD and allowing his name to protect the rest. Might have been a pre-arranged deal from the beginning and all sitting coaches guaranteed anonymity because Chryst would be a legit runner-up if they weren't chosen or decided not to take the job.

This is very possible, I also think it's a similar reason we continue to hear Ken Niumatolo's name. I personally wouldn't mind going the coordinator route if that coordinator was Malzahn or Stoops at FSU.

I can honestly promise that I will not buy tickets if Chryst is chosen. I will follow and support him and the team just the same as always, but if Maturi wants the athletic department's commitment to the football team to be "on the cheap", then my commitment to the athletic department will be "on the cheap" as well.

I know, the key is winning. Hate is a strong word, but I do hate UW, their fans, and Bielema, and if Chryst likes Bielema, he loses points for me.

He'd probably be great; I just don't think he is the only person out there who would be, and thus I'd like to do everything possible to find the others that would also do great here.

Just imagine.. Chryst gets hired as our head coach. Next four or so years imagine our head coach embracing Bret Enema after every game. Even if we were the winners, I would hate to see that.

Wouldn't mind him so much as a coordinator, but really.. I would rather beat Wisconsin with someone that WASN'T a former Badger than someone who was.

At this point, I'd rather not have a Badger but if he helps turn this program around then I am okay with hiring Chryst.

You must not have watched an Auburn game because announcers talk about him as much as they do Gene Chizik. He was the real deal at Tulsa too, and coached at Arkansas. He's the hottest coordinator in the nation.

I like the timing of this. the press has no idea what Maturi has been doing, who he is seeing, then all of a sudden, an interview is leaked. I think your post is spot on.

QFT. Malzahn is the shizz. Seeing him work with Gray would be a beautiful, beautiful thing.

Grow freaking up! I have the biggest man-crush on Guz Malzahn of all-time and would prefer him if we're going the coordinator route, but Chryst is a good football coach. I don't care if he's currently at UW. If he's the best candidate for the job, he should get the job.

I don't think he is; word is that he's not that personable and that could hurt with recruiting. But because he's a current coach for the Badgers? Child, please!

Guz Malzahn has flat out been successful wherever he's gone. And it will happen when he gets a head coaching position.

Badgers are busts. From Michael Bennett to Erasmus James to Paul Grant to Brad Childress to Joel Maturi, etc, etc, etc...it's just bad news. If they had a baseball team, they'd somehow infect the Twins. Thankfully they don't.

They're like a virus. Absolutely nothing goods from employing a Badger. That's why I don't trust Maturi.

Only in Minnesota do people care where the next coach comes from. If this guy can help us win football games, I don't care if he is from the Taliban. If he is a competitive guy (which he has to be to coach big time football), he will want to beat B squared everytime and shove it in his face - even if they are friends.

I don't know enough about him to say he is the best guy, but he is very highly regarded and he makes around $300k. Give him 1.5 and he'll throw that red and white sweater away in a hurry. SKI U MAH!!

If this happens (Chryst), it will only reinforce that Maturi lacks any vision or individual thought. FB is played successfully in plenty of places besides Madison.
The entire process will have been a sham.

I will be sick if this happens.

He is not my choice, but I picked him weeks ago based on his relationship with Maturi. I love his offensive philosophy but don't like that he has never run a program. If he gets the job, it had better be for the right reasons.

I agree that I could care less where someone comes from, if they win. I think there are far more enticing assistants out there than Chryst. That said, how funny would it be if Chryst turns out to be the Mark Few to Bielema's Dan Monson?

If Chryst could pick off some Badger assistants and take with why not

Why not wound your number one nemesis and biggest rival by raiding there staff and taking some of there best coaches. There have to be guy's on that staff that want to move up. If we could pick off Chryst and 4-5 of there coaches who is to say we could not do some pretty good damage. If all of these other people are saying "no" then why not turn to someone that may actually want the job.
Call it "boring" call it Badger disease I don't care if we can find a way to steal some of there "mojo"
and take a little bit of that "horseshoe" away why not. Getting some of there existing staff like maybe there line coach and a few others would help the Gophers not hurt. This is not necessarily the worst idea in the world. We might even steal a recruit or two by taking the right coaches.
Raid the cupboard and steal from the cookie jar from the Badgers, I like it.

It would actually be interesting to see where the staff's loyalties would lie...stay with Bielema or follow Chryst.

Still, I'm not a fan of the move (though a little part of me wants to do anything to hurt Wisconsin).

Got that right.

I don't care if Chryst coached for Badgers as long as he beats them

He would understand how important it is for us to beat Wisconsin. Anything that happens to them that is good for Wisconsin is not good for us. Don't think for a minute that if he Chryst took our head coaching job, that he would do everything he could and work like heck to whip the former "bosses" A$$. Anyone that would get that chance would want that challenge, especially if your coaching in your former bosses shadow.
You all might be pissed that he is a "badger" and born and raised in Madison. I don't care about that for one second if he brought us WINS and a Big10 championship. Let's see it has been 43 years since the last one. The first time the Gopher players would run across the sideline and take the AXE back everyone would forget real quick that he was once one of there coaches.
If Chryst is the Gophers next head coach he will be 100 % Gopher, and from that moment on our side you can believe that. Head coaches know that, once it's your team it's your "TEAM".
They have had a lot of success the last five years and only seem to get better. I say why not, if were going to gamble, gamble on someone that will help us hurt them.
