Former Iowa State basketball star Nikki Moody has sued coach Bill Fennelly, the university and the state for racial discrimination and retaliation, saying she was repeatedly called a "thug" and labeled a selfish player despite being the program's career assists leader.

Iowa State struggled without Moody last season, going 13-17 and missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006. Its struggles came largely after starting center Bryanna Fernstrom abruptly decided to transfer to Minnesota in January. Fernstrom tweeted Monday that "what happens in the dark, always comes to light!" A Gophers spokeswoman confirmed to the AP that it was Fernstrom's account.

but a coach has to get after people, hold them accountable in some fashion. The job is to make the player better than they think they can be and in so doing make the team better than anyone else can visualize it becoming.

If you just go to a practice as a recruit and listen to coach Fennelly bark at his players in sarcastic fashion continually, how can this be a surprise? It's how he coaches. Does it work?
Wins, NCAA Tournaments, attendance all something lots of schools are envious of that he has accomplished at Iowa State.

Next will be Geno at UConn...he is nastier than Fennelly and his results have been pretty good too. If you can't handle being coached that way...don't go there. These guys aren't hiding how they coach.

Just about every coach in 2016 gets attacked for something. Hard to push people to excellence without upsetting them some of the time.

However, regarding the lawsuit, Chassidy Cole's memory differs from Nikki Moody's.

On Monday evening, former ISU women's basketball player Chassidy Cole denied that she ever had a racially charged altercation with ISU coach Bill Fennelly during her playing career from 2009-12.

The comments came in the light of former player Nikki Moody's lawsuit against Fennelly, Iowa State and the state of Iowa for racial discrimination. Cole, an African-American, is one particular player that was mentioned in the lawsuit as someone who took verbal abuse from Fennelly.

In one instance, the suit claims Fennelly told Cole that she "will end up in prison, just like her mother." Cole said that never happened.


The suit also claims Fennelly called Cole a "thug" and that she was "ungrateful" for what Fennelly did for her.

“I’ve never been treated with racism, and I’ve never seen any of his players be treated with racism," Cole said.

There is a difference between discipline and abuse. Telling players they will end up in prison like their mother is not an acceptable form of motivation.
