A third of the way through the B1G season:

On Wednesday night, Indiana 10-7 (2-3 B1G) stunned Michigan State in Bloomington 81-65 completing its sweep of Michigan schools. The Hoosier’s defense took the Spartan’s Aeriel Powers out of the game and never allowed MSU closer than 9 in the second half. Karlee McBride was inserted into the Hoosier starting lineup and responded with 17 points. Tyra Buss (24 points) was 12-17 from the line.

Please Note: Getting to the foul line is a Hoosier goal:

- The free-throw line has proven kind to Indiana this season all by a design months in the making.

The Hoosiers have made more free throws (276) than opponents have attempted (222) this season and lead the Big Ten in both free throws made and attempted while shooting 73 percent from the charity stripe. Nationally, Indiana ranks fourth in free throw makes and ninth in attempts after upsetting No. 18 Michigan State on Wednesday at Assembly Hall.

It hasn't been a statistical anomaly—it's a plan. Head coach Teri Moren said the Hoosiers' numbers at the free-throw line reflect her team's commitment to getting there. With restrictions on contact leading to an increase in whistles and two free throws awarded on the fifth team foul in each quarter, free throws have become one of IU's top priorities.

"Every night that we play, one of the keys to the game is getting to the free throw line," Moren said. "We've got to get there to score."

In all, free throws account for 23.2 percent of Indiana's scoring output through 17 games. That's a 5.3 percent increase from last year's season total and a 5.9 percent increase on the year before.

The Spartans are the closest to the Hoosiers in that regard, scoring 20.1 percent of their points at the line. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Michigan manufactures just 12.3 percent of its scoring from the stripe

Last Matchup: Almost exactly one year ago, in a tedious game at Williams Arena, Minnesota defeated Indiana 65-61. The Gophers committed 20 turnovers and didn’t lead until Carlie Wagner knocked down a three with 1:18 remaining making it 60-59. It took another Wagner score with :37 seconds remaining to finally put the Gophers ahead for good.

B1G Wins: Michigan (77-69), Michigan State (81-65)
B1G Losses: @Wisconsin (73-69), @Ohio State (97-70), @Purdue (63-59)

Probable Starters:

G Tyra Buss 17.4/game in the B1G
F Amanda Cahill 15.8
G Karlee McBride 6.6
G Alexis Gassion 8.6
C Jenn Anderson 8.6

Carol Ann Shudlick-Smith in attendance @ todays game. Banham playing the point more without her trademark white headband drops in 24. Gophers win a close one 78-76 and now need to beat NW Wednesday night.

Mikayla Bailey’s two threes, on a day when threes were scarce, provided the oomph needed for a 78-76 Gopher win. Bailey’s first three came with :01 seconds left on the 3rd quarter clock giving Minnesota a 63-58 lead. Her last three from the right corner, with :24 seconds remaining, gave Minnesota the lead and the game’s final score. For good measure, Bailey secured the win by rebounding a missed Lamke free throw (Lamke was fouled while rebounding a missed IU shot) and hustling away from defenders. Thanks Mikayla!

Minnesota missed some great layup opportunities (at least 10 points). Starr who had 10 points today, missed three great chances. Two of her misses were at the start of the second half. Minnesota isolated Starr one on one and she beat the defenders down the lane but couldn’t finish. Starr had one of those good/bad days. She got yanked a couple of times in the 1st quarter for some defensive instruction; but played a key role as the game wore on.

Minnesota struggled at the post position with Hedstrom being the best option. That’s not to say Edwards, Lamke , Barnes and Buckingham (Josie picked up two fouls on one trip down the court) didn’t battle; but Indiana’s posts (Anderson and Royster) gave them fits.

Minnesota did a good job of staying away from fouling Indiana early and did a good job of forcing some fouls on the Hoosiers much to the chagrin of Hoosier coach Teri Moren. Wednesday night Northwestern with another animated head coach, Joe Mckeown comes to Williams Arena.

As GringaGopher said, Banham played without her head band (and with more of a ponytail I do believe). Also Hedstrom eschewed the headband.

It was a mismatch inside. Indiana’s centers (Anderson and Royster) combined for 31 points and 14 rebounds.
Minnesota’s centers (Edwards, Lamke, Barnes Buckingham and Hedstrom) combined for 9 points and 10 rebounds (5 of those points and 7 of the rebounds were Hedstrom’s).

Starters:

Lamke
Wagner
Banham
Bailey
Starr

Thanks for your coverage Iggy and Gringa. What's your guys thoughts on the ladies defense. Doesn't seem to be a point of emphasis.

I kinda like Lamke as a freshman. Hopefully she progresses.

Any recollection on who made the game-winning assist? ;) Gutsy decision.

In Mikayla's words:

Senior Guard Mikayla Bailey

On the game-winning shot:
“Yeah, before we went in for the play I told Carlie (Wagner), I’m like, ‘Take it all the way. You’ve been making those all night,’ and she got cut off and passed me the ball. And I just stayed relaxed and poised and hit the shot. And yeah, it just went in.”

Happy for the gals...They need to go 10-6 for Banham to get to the dance. Beat the Cats!!!

Station19 is spot on with the many defensive problems of this team. They do a poor job of guarding the wing when they play the 2-3 zone and quite often fail to make the timely switch on screen plays. Starr was benched for her defensive lapses yesterday so maybe Stollings is starting to send a message. The Big has 3 teams in the top 25 , OSU,MSU and Maryland, so the Gophers will have to step up their game to get to the 10 win mark. I did notice Stollings starting to work the refs which was good to see but she has a long ways to go to match Brenda Friese on intensity. They really needed this win and have to beat NW on Wednesday. I also hope for Banham to finally get to pay in the NCAA as that was part of her motivation for returning after the ACL. She is closing in on Katie Smith on the all-time scoring list and that was fun to watch Katie interview her after the Illinois game.

Four years of watching Banham, Mullaney and Bailey. Going to seem different when they are gone.

GO GOPHERS!

The defense was especially off to start the game. It wasn't just the normal weaknesses inherent in a zone system, there were times when players just didn't know where they were supposed to be, resulting in layups for IU. A couple times it was Lamke losing sight of the ball, which is understandable for a frosh. On a couple other times though it was the veteran guards being wildly out of position. Thankfully that did get cleaned up in the second half.

Definitely was a rough day in the post. Only Hedstrom managed to beat there posts to the spot and front. Edwards and Lamke both just looked like freshman out there. Buckingham was put in just to be tall and more difficult to shoot over and she couldn't even do that.

That brings me to Hedstrom. Really pleasantly surprised to see her making some contributions this year. She knows the game, plays hard and knows when it's the right time to shoot.

Mullaney had a really nice 2nd half on offense and we needed it with Banham being so quiet after a 20 pt first half. Her mid range pullup is money this year.

Defense is definitely a point of emphasis. If you watch Stollings and Dawkins on the bench during the game, defense looks like THE point of emphasis. Even though I think the defense improved after Starr and her aggressiveness entered the lineup, as noted in the above posts, holes (sometimes big gaping ones) remain. Through six B1G games, Minnesota is second in offense (82.5/game) and 12th in defense (77.3/game).

The team lacks a clamp down defender or even a disruptive defender. You can see this in the steal stats. Minnesota is 12th in the B1G with 5 steals/game. (Purdue, Northwestern, Ohio State and Maryland are above 8 steals/game). I assume this is being addressed in recruiting.

Northwestern will be another test. Lyons can find and score from any hole in any zone while Deary and Coffey present their own special match-up problems.
