B1G POY

For the third consecutive game Rachel Banham faces off against a B1G Player of the Year candidate. This time it’s Shatori Walker-Kimbrough. Walker-Kimbrough is 6th (20.2 points per game) in B1G scoring and is all about percentages. She hits 53.9% from the field and 58.3% (42-72) from behind the arc. Banham who has shot more than twice as many threes is 44.6% (70-157) from behind the arc.

Sunday’s Minnesota/Maryland match-up will be impacted by Saturday’s B1G schedule: Ohio State @ Michigan State and Penn State @ Indiana. If Indiana loses, the Gophers clinch a B1G tourney double bye. If Ohio State loses, Maryland will be playing for its second outright Big Ten title.

It’s an ESPN2 game rekindling memories of last year’s much praised Mill City Battle Royal (also an ESPN2 game). With 32 seconds remaining, Carlie Wagner hit a three off a drive and kick from Shayne Mullaney tying the game at 73. Unfortunately, Maryland’s Brene Mosely got a bail out foul with 2.8 seconds remaining. Mosely made both free throws, the Gophers flubbed the inbounds and following another Minnesota foul, Moseley put the game away with two more. Maryland remained undefeated in the B1G last year and this year has lost only to Ohio State-twice.

This season, Maryland has three losses (two in the B1G): Connecticut (83-73), Ohio State (80-71) and @ Ohio State (94-86). I watched both OSU games and my impression was that Ohio State was just the faster team. In the first game the Buckeyes inside duo (Hart and Cooper) combined for 31 points compared to Maryland’s Jones and Howard totaling 18 points. In the second game, the Buckeyes were 12-23 from behind the arc while Maryland was 8-17. Here’s hoping the Gophers can run Jones and Howard out of the game.

Probable Maryland Starters:

G Shatori Walker-Kimbrough: 20.2 points per B1G game
C Brionna Jones: 15.6/game and 10.6 rebounds/game
G Kristen Confroy: 9.1/game
C Malina Howard: 5.8/game
G Chloe Pavlec: 1.8/game

Other:
G Brene Moseley: 10.2/game

Prediction: Banham gets 46 pts. (33 from 3 pt range), 11 boards, 7 dimes. Gopher ladies in an upset by 5.

Maryland will be playing for the outright B1G title after Michigan State defeats Ohio State 107-105 in triple OT in East Lansing.

The Buckeyes are starting to acquire a history of not being able to close out important games. They had some near hilarious miscues and didn't run much of an offense during the last 20 minutes.

So your saying the Gophers win over OSU is looking less impressive.

Massey has Maryland winning by 18.5 points.

Through yesterday's games:

Sagarin's ratings have Maryland #4 and Minnesota #44

The NCAA nitty gritty report RPI has Maryland 11 and Minnesota 76

I have a hunch that Rachel will come out strong from the very beginning of this one, rather than the second half as she has done several times recently. She is undoubtedly aware of the impact a win today would have on our NCAA hopes.

Digging an early Gopher hole once again.

Sit Bailey. ..PLEASE...Wagner has to learn to finish shots. ...

Well, Bailey has to play, given the roster and I'm fine with her effort and taking the occasional open three. When she puts the ball on the floor though......wow. Nothing good ever happens then.

And yes, the Gophs look tight, even frantic out there.

Predictable ass-whooping today....Gotta win a couple in the BTT and hope....Would love to see Banham make the dance.

Really getting chewed up on the inside.

Many shots just not falling.

Too many sloppy turnovers.

Starting blocking out on rebounds.

Need to slow it down when it's not there. Forcing too many issues.

Wagner has to get involved. Hasn't had a good February.

Definitely like Hedstrom over Starr.

BTW I like the 'team logo' covering of the upper deck seating...

.

There's the downside of Stollings style. Giving confidence to your players by opening things up can be great but there has to be some cut off point, especially when you're playing a much quicker team. We aren't good enough to outgun a team like Maryland.

Maryland beating us to every lose ball. Agree on Starr. She has not played well the last several games. This game maybe over in the third quarter. Don't like the body language on floor.

Agree that Bailey has not been shooting well lately and she can not create off the dribble. I would not have left the leading scorer in the Big on the bench for 5 minutes as you have to trust her to play smart with 2 fouls. We have no inside game to counter the terps. Interesting comment that we could be one of the last 4 in with other losses today. Still need a strong showing in the BTT.

F--king game over. I hope the transfer from Iowa State can play post defense. If not Stollings better bring in a defensive coach To crap the bed like this on national TV certainly won't help getting to the dance. Even Banham looks fla.t

There is a different level of play for the top 10 women's programs and then there's a level that Connecticut plays at. Everyone else is far, far below.

Agree about UConn but we played Maryland to a last second shot last year with a legitimate Big center. They have also lost to OSU twice so we are horrible today and they are shooting lights out for their senior day.

About sums it up.

Lack of intensity, not going after rebounds.

Too many times where we put up a 3, miss...no one there to rebound.....yet get beat on a fast break....befuddling....

We probably win the conference title this year with AZB.

Rebounds: Maryland 53 and Minnesota 23-very little else mattered.

Starters:

Barnes
Bailey
Banham
Mullaney
Wagner

Minutes Played:

40 Wagner: 17 points
34 Mullaney
30 Banham: 26 points
28 Hedstrom: 21
22 Edwards
18 Barnes
17 Bailey
11 Starr

11-7 means a five seed in the B1G tourney.

It's hard to beat Maryland on their turf and it doesn't help that the gophers failed to play defense.
