B1G POY
For the third consecutive game Rachel Banham faces off against a B1G Player of the Year candidate. This time it’s Shatori Walker-Kimbrough. Walker-Kimbrough is 6th (20.2 points per game) in B1G scoring and is all about percentages. She hits 53.9% from the field and 58.3% (42-72) from behind the arc. Banham who has shot more than twice as many threes is 44.6% (70-157) from behind the arc.
Sunday’s Minnesota/Maryland match-up will be impacted by Saturday’s B1G schedule: Ohio State @ Michigan State and Penn State @ Indiana. If Indiana loses, the Gophers clinch a B1G tourney double bye. If Ohio State loses, Maryland will be playing for its second outright Big Ten title.
It’s an ESPN2 game rekindling memories of last year’s much praised Mill City Battle Royal (also an ESPN2 game). With 32 seconds remaining, Carlie Wagner hit a three off a drive and kick from Shayne Mullaney tying the game at 73. Unfortunately, Maryland’s Brene Mosely got a bail out foul with 2.8 seconds remaining. Mosely made both free throws, the Gophers flubbed the inbounds and following another Minnesota foul, Moseley put the game away with two more. Maryland remained undefeated in the B1G last year and this year has lost only to Ohio State-twice.
This season, Maryland has three losses (two in the B1G): Connecticut (83-73), Ohio State (80-71) and @ Ohio State (94-86). I watched both OSU games and my impression was that Ohio State was just the faster team. In the first game the Buckeyes inside duo (Hart and Cooper) combined for 31 points compared to Maryland’s Jones and Howard totaling 18 points. In the second game, the Buckeyes were 12-23 from behind the arc while Maryland was 8-17. Here’s hoping the Gophers can run Jones and Howard out of the game.
Probable Maryland Starters:
G Shatori Walker-Kimbrough: 20.2 points per B1G game
C Brionna Jones: 15.6/game and 10.6 rebounds/game
G Kristen Confroy: 9.1/game
C Malina Howard: 5.8/game
G Chloe Pavlec: 1.8/game
Other:
G Brene Moseley: 10.2/game
