Brackets: Minnesota will play the winner of the Northwestern/Wisconsin match-up. If Minnesota wins they will face Indiana. The Hoosiers and Gophers split home and home.

Minnesota earned the No. 5 seed, closing out Big Ten play with an 11-7 conference mark and 19-10 overall. The Golden Gophers will first play on Thursday, March 3, in the second game of the day at approximately 2:30 p.m.

The Gophers will play their first game Thursday approximately 1:30 PM Central on BTN.
If they win they will play Friday.....same Bat time, same Bat channel.

The B1G tournament kicks off at 12:30 tomorrow with two games.


In Game One, Northwestern takes on Wisconsin: Northwestern won the only conference matchup.

Northwester: 4-14 (15-15) In his presser, McKeown cited the first Gopher loss (Northwestern was ranked 20th) as one of the season’s turning points. Losing twice to the Lady Lions and the Gophers kept the Wildcats in a downward spiral.

B1G Wins: Nebraska (85-62), Ohio State (86-82), @Illinois (69-59), Wisconsin (71-53)
Losses to Minnesota: @Minnesota (95-92) and @ Minnesota (112-106) in the double OT Rachel Banham Game.


Wisconsin: 3-15 (7-21)

B1G Wins: Indiana (73-65), Penn State (82-62), Purdue (64-57), Minnesota (84-77)

Losses to Minnesota: @ Wisconsin (84-77)



In Game Two, Illinois plays Penn State: Penn State won the only conference match-up.

Illinois: 2-16 (9-20)

B1G Wins: Wisconsin (71-65), @Wisconsin (76-56)


Penn State: 6-12 (11-18) The Lady Lions biggest win was defeating the Spartans in East Lansing.

B1G Wins: Northwestern (79-72), @Iowa (82-60), @ Illinois (65-56), @ Michigan Statt (65-61), @ Northwestern (73-54), Iowa (81-68)
 

At the half, Wisconsin leads Northwestern 33-32. The Wildcat's Maggie Lyon is not playing-she is on the bench wearing a boot on her left foot.
 



Friday’s Matchups:


GAME 1: Iowa 8-10 (18-12) versus Michigan 9-9 (17-12)

The Hawkeyes and Wolverines split home and home this season. Early in conference play Michigan stunned the then #23 Hawkeyes in Ann Arbor (82-75). Trailing by 17 in the third quarter, Michigan outscored Iowa in the fourth 30-13 for the win.

In the late season rematch in Iowa City, Iowa ended a three game losing streak by defeating Michigan 85-69.


GAME 2: Minnesota versus Northwestern


GAME 3: Rutgers 8-10 (17-13) versus Nebraska 9-9 (18-11)

Rutgers and Nebraska split their season series with Nebraska winning a mid January matchup in Lincoln 65-54. Nebraska used a 24-11 fourth quarter to close out a comeback. A couple of weeks later, Rutgers returned the favor in Piscataway. Behind a 26-16 fourth quarter the Scarlet Knights emerged with a 66-56 victory.


GAME 4: Purdue 10-8 (19-10) versus Penn State 6-12 (13-18)

Purdue and Penn State met in Happy Valley combining for a wild, two overtime affair with the Boilers prevailing 88-78. Penn State led 42-25 at the half before Purdue rallied to tie at the end of regulation. Purdue finished off the second OT with a 15-5 run.

This game marked the return of Bridget Perry to the Purdue lineup. Perry celebrated by leading everyone with 27 points and 12 rebounds. Following this victory, Purdue suffered a four game losing slump before recovering and finishing the season with three wins.
 

Moving On: Friday’s Matchups


GAME 1: Maryland plays Iowa which defeated Michigan 97-85 behind Chase Coley’s 20 points and 10 rebounds. Maryland won the regular season contest in Iowa 76-56.

GAME 2: Indiana plays Northwestern which defeated Minnesota. IU won the regular season contest in Evanston 91-84. This should be a battle.

GAME 3: Ohio State plays Rutgers which outlasted Nebraska 66-63. The Buckeyes won both regular season games; in Columbus, 90-78 and in Piscataway, 67-58.

GAME 4: Michigan State plays Purdue which rallied to defeat Penn State 70-59. Michigan State won the regular season contest 68-56 in East Lansing.

In an article about whether the Huskers with their injuries will participate in the WNIT we learn that B1G Freshman of the Year Jessica Shepard has a stress reaction in her foot.


ADD SHEPARD TO INJURY LIST: Shepard has a stress reaction in a foot, and was wearing a walking boot earlier in the week and not practicing. Yori always thought Shepard would play Thursday, but then the concern would have been if she would have been healthy enough to play in the next round.

Shepard scored four points, her second-lowest total of the season, on 1-of-9 shooting from the field in 26 minutes of play. “She didn't have one of her better games, but she also is not healthy,” Yori said
 



Led by Nia Coffey, Northwestern continued their run taking down a frustrated Indiana 79-73. The 12th seed moves on.

Iowa ran out to a 28-18 lead at the end of the first quarter. Maryland recovered, held the Hawkeyes to 4 second quarter points and finished with a 75-55 Terp win.
 

Saturday’s Games:

Game 1: Northwestern plays Maryland. In their only regular season meeting, on Northwestern’s senior day, Maryland jumped to a 25-5 first quarter lead. Northwestern rallied, cutting the lead to five in the fourth quarter, before falling 79-70. Can the ‘Cats win their fourth in four days?

Game 2: Ohio State, victors over Rutgers (73-58), plays Michigan State which earned a hard fought victory over Purdue 65-64. The Buckeyes and Spartans split their season series. The Buckeyes won in Columbus 85-80 and Sparty won a wild one in overtime on Senior Day in East Lansing 107-105.

Of note: OSU's Kelsey Mitchell set a B1G tourney record with 43 points. Of concern: OSU's Ameryst Alston injured her wrist and spent the last minutes of the game on the bench with an ice bag on the wrist.
 

Northwestern’s run came to an end with an 83-62 loss to Maryland.

Ohio State’s losing streak extends to three after Michigan State dominated the Buckeyes 82-63. The Spartans took control in the first quarter and extended their lead to 36 in the third. Suzy Merchant got a chance to rest some starters for tomorrow’s championship match-up with Maryland. Aerial Powers is in top form. The Buckeyes are not.
 

Maryland closed out another sweep of B1G conference and tournament championships defeating Michigan State 60-44. The score was tied at 30 midway through the third quarter before the Terps pulled away.

Spartan’s, Hines and Powers, were in foul trouble early and struggled to score 8 points each. It was a game of turnovers (22 for MSU and 19 for Maryland) and spotty play. Whether it was enough to keep Maryland out of the Uconn bracket remains to be seen.
