Some running thoughts on the offense with second viewing
First Quarter
- have to hang on to that ball Donovahn
- Bush beat for the sack
- as others pointed out the third down and one play had NO chance. That's on Limegrover.
- great catch in traffic by Wolitarsky
- contrary to legend, TCU getting pressure by blitzing on most plays
- the blitz works; given time Leidner throwing well and if not...
horrific decisions
-terrible call on the punt, the PR actively moved laterally to block our man. Home cooking.
-nice shuttle pass!

Second Quarter
- Brady Quinn looks embalmed
- Wolitarsky INT hit him square in the hands. Can't blame that one on Leidner.
-Olson pancakes a linebacker after the whistle
- Hayes playing a little right tackle
-Laeur struggling a little in pass protection. Pirsig hurt?
- poor way to end the half. Had a timeout left as well. That's on Kill.

Third Quarter
-Hayes in for Bush to start second half
- Eric Carter sighting
- Brando is hurting my ears. Up there With Joe Buck.
- Laeur beat by DE, pocket collapses leading to wounded duck INT. Team Fail.
- Donovahn drops a long pass that would have been a td. Kid just doesn't have good hands. Plsek has softer hands.

Fourth Quarter
- play where Leidner hurt...no obvious injury to left foot. The Right foot looks like it could have sustained a turf toe as driven into the turf and hyperextended. Strange.
- Streveler moves like a water bug. Love his energy.
- those Texas girls are scorching hot
- bad read by Streveler

Takeaways
- Line struggled but right side of line really struggled. Laeur looked hurt.
- TCU blitzed the hell out of Mitch with good dividends
- given decent time Mitch only made a few really bad throws/decisions. There is hope.
- only one INT and the fumble can be wholly put on Mitch.
- Holland needs to play. Gotta think he'll get his shirt burned if he's the playmaker we hope he is.

For your takeaways where you say only 1 INT can be put on Mitch, I agree but there were also 2 times TCU should have had interceptions, one was broken up by Maxx and the other the guy just dropped, both were easy catches for the defender and they just didn't hold on. We easily could have had 5 interceptions.

agreed with your recap for the most part.

My biggest questions come from the lack of time any QB will get. As the OL/OC Limey should be calling/developing plays that can help his guys up front. drop back passing for 4+ seconds is not a good plan for his boys up front. especially if you are seeing blitz's coming from every direction. it is safe to say most coaches are seeing this and planning to do the same.

it is now on Limey to develop plans against that. it has happened in the first three games and will continue. why has it taken into the 4th for him to have to do anything about it? is the mental aspect of the game not his strong point? whatever it takes the play calling has to improve to allow everyone to do a decent job

if quick hitters are the answer great; if jet sweeps work fine; if screens loosen up the Defense awesome but somehow Limey needs to get this offense into this century. The commentator called our offense a dinosaur last week end. if that isn't a huge slap in the face for Limey and then Pattersons comments about the big Ten should wake up a man if he has wherewithal

Good observations by PE. How about a little more analysis to go with it. Usually someone with good observations makes good analysis also. I believe Laeur and Pirsig are both banged up. Nagging injuries. Have been for a while. I think we are deeper in talent than in experience, and not necessarily game experience. That is real important on the OL. I hope Hayes is ready.

I would like to see Mitch rested with intense rehab to get healthy but not bench for performance. Yet. We are younger than I thought and TCU was a lot better than I thought. I still think we win 4 or more B1G games.

I think that's a must. If we win less than 4 B1G games, then either (a) we lost a game to somebody who went 1-7 or worse last year or (b) we failed to get a single win against one of the five teams who did better than 1-7 last year (most if not all of whom have looked vulnerable OOC).

At first glance, I read the thread title as "offensive" as in putrid, awful, etc. vs. offensive referring to the teams offense. Would a Baylor or Oregon fan make that mistake?

Good take. I think it's always best to take a look again a day or two after the fact. It's always good to re-watch the game as well. I often times find it amazing regarding the conclusions that people can come to after instantly watching a game. I must not know enough about football, as it takes me a little be of seeing it again.

There are definitely a few times when Leidner makes throws that make you confident that, yes, he is a Big Ten QB. I do think his mind is racing a lot though and his decision making has to be quicker. The INT in the 3rd quarter when he was hit was an example of that I thought. Yes, he got hit causing the INT, but it seemed like the play was there and he should have thrown it earlier as well. The first INT, that was a poor decision. The one off of Woli's hands, I think it wasn't a perfect ball by any means, it was definitely high, but I bet Woli would be the first guy that would tell you he should make that catch. Seemed like Quinn had the same thought; it was high, but you have to help your QB out as well.

I thought for being a new color guy, I didn't mind Brady Quinn. People have to realize that he's new to it as well. He'll improve and I didn't mind him.

I definitely thought Bush struggled, but I avoid trying to single a certain player out usually because we don't know what the call was and what the responsibilities were. But being replaced does kind of speculate that he had a rough go of it.

Leidner needs to improve, but he needs help. He can't do it alone. If Strev plays this week, it will be interesting to see. He definitely can move out there.

I agree it should not have been called, but our guy initiated the contact and those were Big Ten refs giving them home cooking.

Excellent recap. Thanks

You rewatched that game? You are a strong man.

Totally disagree. The rule is that if you signal for fair catch you can't block. He moved into the path of a defender, not the other way around. Had he stood his ground and our guy came up to hit him, you'd be right, but that isn't what happened. The other refs were pleading with him to change his call and he refused. Terrible call. Should have been a no call as both players made contact with each other, but if you have to make a call it's on the offense.

Very nice recap. Do you think there would be any way that when Leidner is healthy they would put him into a pistol set and let him make some quick short throws? I would love to see what KJ, D Jones and others could do in space.

It really did seem like the official that called was having to justify the call....

I believe they even announced #15 which was the PR's number. They should have picked up the flag.

Lauer and Pirsig are both hurt.

Lauer has been battling a high ankle sprain since fall camp, he seems like he is still struggling to recover from that as he is not moving as well as he had in the past. Pirsig hurt his shoulder against MTSU in the second half, don't think he has been back in there since that moment. If Pirsig can go, Mitch needs him out there to protect him as Pirsig can be one of our better pass blockers when he is in the game.

" Wolitarsky INT hit him square in the hands. Can't blame that one on Leidner."

this totally caught Wolitarsky by surprise.

I agree, there were many bad decisions. I'm hopeful...Mitch will be chastened and decide discretion is the better part of valor. Kill will not tolerate serial turnovers. If it continues we will absolutely have a new starter.

You that are defending Woli, watch the replay. It literally smacks him in the hands and proceeds to go through his hands. I really like him, don't get me wrong but he should have had that.

If our receivers want to be big time they need to make catches that are anywhere within their wingspan, not just in the bread basket.

I also agree they need to gameplan assuming there will be an aggressive defense and have plays that keep Mitch comfortable. Mitch also needs to get rid of the ball quicke. More experience will help all these things. Or should.

We have to know exactly what defenses are going to do until we start hitting some passes. Should be easy to practice a few plays this week that are quick passes and get some of our fast guys in space which will take some pressure off our Oline.

That would require Limey to decide he may be wrong and he has to adjust. His presser basically said it was his fault and that he could curl up or change.
he needs to to buck up and figure it out. this cant be his first rodeo but it sure looks like it. I still believe the job is too big for him and he needs to cut back to one job but i digress

Great recap, Pompous.
Keep 'em coming.
