No. If you aren't one of the top 68 teams in the country playing in the only tournament that matters, it's not a successful season.

But I do like Pitino and think he got the most out of this team.

You saying Weber State and Cal Poly are better than NIT teams?

Maybe if you say it matter-of-factly it will become true.

I know making the NIT every year isn't going to cut it, but I guess I don't understand when you look at this in the context of a 1st year head coach, especially as young as he is, why is it not a success.

Is 25 wins the most we've officially ever had? Hard not to call this season a success given where expectations were at the beginning

Hell, I'm officially calling it the best season in 24 years at least. Your first goal is to win the game and they did it more than any other Gopher team.

Lol you think the ncaa has the top 68 teams lol keep posting these gems lol

Success, yes.

Voshon Leonard group winning NIT was a sign of bigger things to come for the program. Hopefully this is too. Great publicity and great to see RP SR rooting hard for his son.

Finally, I disagree about Knight. I liked his commentary, learned a lot.

Maybe I'm defining success differently than most. Did Pitino do a good job? Yes. Did he get the most out of the team and surpass expectations? Yes. Does playing in the NIT constitute a successful season? My answer is no.

You agree that when up by 2, you should foul to give them 2 free throws? Or that throwing the ball up in the air wastes 8 seconds? Or that no 3 is a good shot and if you missed it was because you didn't pump fake first?

People like John Galton are goddamn losers. Go find a new hobby bro chacho

Yep, because the "best" 68 teams make the tournament.

SS, did we expose our limitations again by winning another close game? Too unMinnesotan? Sorry, I just can't let that other thread go. I almost always agree with you on here but I couldn't disagree more with you being so discouraged by the semis. I still haven't quite figured out the rationale either. You made it seem like we were dropping off a lot in talent next year and the talent in the BT was going way up. You also seemed to ignore that our team this year had very little experience, so there's no reason to think we shouldn't see significant improvement across the board. Alright, I'll leave it alone. This post was completely unrelated to the thread. It was definitely a successful season though. It's hard to imagine that we wouldn't have made the tournament if Dre hadn't gotten hurt. And if the NCAA had allowed a certain transfer... damn.

Love when people say we aren't one of the 68 best teams in the country because we missed the tourney. We'd be 20 point favorites on a neutral court against most of the small conference tournament winners like UWM. We were just as good as a lot of at large teams as well.

I think we can agree that this is a very good start for Pitino, he definitely raised his stock this year as a head coach. You can bet more schools will have him on their radar screen.

Who thought Dayton was better than OSU and Syracuse before they played?

So we're better than Wisconsin because we beat them in January? Where do I pick up my Final Four ticket?

Yes. The Gophers were better than Wisconsin on that day. Over the course of the year not so much. But in the NCAA tournament, all you need to do is be better on that day.

So how is it fair to judge single-day superiority when claiming that we aren't one of the 68 best teams in the country? Galt's argument is nonsensical.

I think the best way to figure out if this season was a success is to imagine if Tubby was still here (I know people hate this debate, but it's valid) and we had big Mo still big, and freshmen Foster and Ellis. Would we still have the same regular season? Would we have made it to the NCAA tourney? Would we have even made it to the NIT? The Gophers picked being last was probably where we should have been, but Pitino found a way to bring in a little help, and for sure made us a top 50 team with this Championship. Sure, we would have loved to make it to the NCAA tourney, and we almost did... but in my eyes, winning the NIT means more than a first round loss in the NCAA's. You can't say this didn't help build the confidence of this team. I say next year, if we can find a half way decent #4 (a more beefed up Joey King, or Josh Martin), and a serviceable #3, I am confident we'll have an even better season.

Not a success or failure either. We would have had to win a game in the tourney for this to be a truly successful season but not a failure by any means either. Just because one idiot writer picked us to finish last in the conference and we didn't does not make this a success. I think with the talent we had coming back with Austin and Andre and then a 14ppg guy in Malik as well coming in as well any reasonable fan would have predicted a 7th place finish and a last 4 in or first 4 out type season and a one and done or an NIT final 4. No way someone could have picked NW, Penn state, Nebraska, Illinois and Purdue to all finish ahead of us and this season it shouldn't be considered a success just because this didn't happen. Expectations should have been about this high in the first place.

Did you not watch Malik this year? You are really going to cite his FIU stats and consider him a big time transfer?

He didn't live up to the hype or only for part of the season but almost 15 a game at FIU should equate to about double digits at 10ppg for this team and replace Coleman's production and I expected him to be a top 3 player on this team based on what he did at FIU so yes I would consider that somewhat of a big time transfer. Anyways Deandre Mathieu made up for it so its fine. Their roles and productivity flip flopped from what we should have expected at the beginning of the season.

DP, please do not read this post. Move along.

Like the part that mattered the most.

There's no rule against disagreeing with me.

That was an excellent basketball game last night (unlike the ugly one vs. FSU), one that should give the program some momentum heading into 2014-15. Most importantly, the Gophers now need to consistently translate that level of play into the January-March portion of their schedule, especially on the road.

Agree, if Rakeem Buckles is on this team we're not discussing a NIT championship. That ship sailed a long time ago, though.

Most apt description I heard someone use was a hired gun who used a water pistol.

Still can't figure out why Joe Coleman transferred. Would have fit this team well as a get-out-and-go guy & as an undersized rebounder.

Coleman is better than Malik

Absolutely, momentum - new coach, name power, appealing style of play, Josh Martin coming next year to add on what already is...exciting time to be a U fan and B10 fan.

He probably won't show up after a nice win...too much happiness and positivity for him to deal with around here.

Yes, but think of all the inconsequential corrections that he's missing!
