Was this a "win" for the U?

CJT, I'm going to have to disagree. If Joel's employees screwed up he would get blamed (or would at least share in it). Given that fact I don't see why he shouldn't share in some of the credit. I have a lot of problems with the man but his department got it done when it came to this game. That's a good reflection on him whether you like it or not.

Of course its going to reflect well on him. I don't believe I said it wouldn't. He will get lots of credit. The question for me is how much does he really deserve? I hate the "I have a source" comments people make but I have heard stories from inside the department that would bring into question Joel's organizational skills. On the other hand if he put the right people in place to do the job then he should get credit for that. I do know Scott Ellison was here well before Joel.

A good reflection certainly but my guess is the real credits belongs with his associates.

I disagree. I believe Maturi has built a solid reputation for the orgnaizational side of the AD position and has run things pretty well financially. It would only make sense that those same qualities would add to the success of this event. The on-field/court performance and results achieved by his coaching hires is where he is often blamed, and there is plenty of material covering that here and elsewhere.

Give credit where credit is due... or keep digging that hole. So far, I just see digging.

But that's my point. It's pretty dicey to play this game because then you get to assign credit and blame when it suits you. If you'd have blamed Joel had his staff effed up then you have to be willing to give him credit when the same staff do well.

I am not sure the positives outweigh the negatives. Highlighting the unusually nasty weather on a national stage (Dome collapsing, shovelers at the U, etc.) probably was not a good thing for recruiting. Hearing guys publicly complain about their safety playing on the field and having those concerns broadcast on ESPN was definitely a very bad thing for recruiting.

I guess it matters what people paid attention to more: the events leading up to the game or the actual game (and commentary of the game) on Monday night.

I wonder how many Vikings fans in attendance, who've never been to a Gopher game, now are thinking: "that was a fun time, cool stadium, we need to go to a Gopher game next year."

The 'U'

Highlight for me was when mike tirico called it THE 'U; referring to Minnesota (not Miami) lets hope a few years from now everyone is calling us the 'U'

Stadium looked great, hopefully the fact that it can host a MNF game excites recruits.

I liked that too. I think that Miami billing itself as "The U", as if that only refers to them rubbed a lot of people the wrong way all over the country. I remember a year or two ago, on this board, when you used "The U" to refer to Minnesota, people here would say "you mean Miami?" Thankfully that attitude has changed.
