Not only is Lane one of the most modest guys you'll meet, he's a real Horatio Alger story. He came from nothing, worked his way up through the jr high, high school, division 3, FCS, the NFL, then finally got his shot in the FBS after years of demonstrating a strong work ethic, imagination, coaching and fundraising acumen. He's been said to have Red Bull instead of blood running through his veins. Others say he runs on batteries because he never sleeps. He cuts film, calls recruits, and does press conferences, all at the same time. His pep talks are the stuff of legend. He somehow managed to recruit 4 and 5 star players to the destitute coaching graveyard and football backwater known as USC, located in one of the worst climates in the western world. Having a career arc like that without any family connections or financial worries when starting out is simply incredible.
