Vaughn cites STrib's "negativity" as reason for eliminating Gophers

Currently living in Philly and while this town is made up of an unlimited number of dbags talking sports...I will say that the press is mostly positive (and honest) when it comes to college teams. Of course, there are more D-1 BB programs in Philadelphia than in all of MN, IA & Wisc combined so that might have something to limit the singularity of their hate...but I just haven't seen it here regardless of the program. Now the pro teams and pro players are mauled here to make up for the college love fest.

Not trying to call you out, but educate me... What are the 10 schools in Philly?

Northern Iowa
Iowa
Iowa state
Drake
Minnesota
Uwgb
UW Madison
UW Milwaukee
Marquette

It truly is a shame, and Vaughn is expressing what many of us have always wondered, do the athletes recognize. Wouldn't be surprised to hear Kevin Love say something similar when he leaves,

I 100% agree. I'm hoping a positive season will help steer it back the right way, but I have a feeling Kevin remembers being booed multiple occasions last season. I know that's not the media, but its not like there's exactly a lot of high-quality Wolves media coverage here either.

When Kevin Love got booed last year he deserved it and he knows it. If he had played for the the Lakers or Knicks and made comments to a reporter about what a horrible franchise it was and how he couldn't wait to get out of town the fan reaction would have been much, much worse. I hope when and if he opts out he doesn't use an ******y excuse like that he wanted to stay here but couldn't because he got booed a couple of times.

I don't know if there are 10, but I can think of 7 off the top of my head -- the "Big 5" (St. Joe's, Villanova, Temple, Penn, La Salle), Drexel, and although it's not geographically there, Penn State is the de facto school of many people in Philly. And then there are a couple up near Lehigh which is about 50 miles away.

Right, so Philly does not have more schools than the Iowa Wisconsin and Minnesota combined.

Also Lafayette and I think Rutgers, while in Jersey is pretty close to Philly

I think there are lots of colleges everywhere. We sure are hurting for things to discuss lately.

The daily paper delivered to my front door is the Washington Post. Online, I subscribe to the Star Tribune. I'm not a great fan of the Washington Post sports writers. We have a number of Division 1 programs in our area, such as Georgetown, Navy, and Virginia, but by far the most column inches in the Post are devoted to Maryland, which is my least favorite local sports program. And while the Post sports writers often criticize Maryland, one never doubts that they are fans of the program, want it to succeed, and praise it whenever they can. I don't have the same feeling about most of the Star Tribune sports writers. I get the sense that their loyalties lie elsewhere, and that they take joy in Minnesota's failings. In my opinion this does adversely affect such things as recruiting and fan support. I wish we could replace the local sports writers with people who really care about the Gophers and the state of Minnesota. That doesn't mean ignoring problems with our sports programs. It means keeping criticism constructive.

I think there are two issues here. One is the negativity towards the U, which doesn't have much relevancy to Vaughn IMO (although I agree it's true and a problem). the Star tribune wrote an article personally attacking HIM. Not the school, an 18 year old high school kid who they have no proof did anything wrong. It's one thing to bash a school, another to do it to 18 year old high school players.

I would say many of the locals take pride in touting themselves as being objective and unbiased.

Vaughn tweeted he'll be announcing his decision this weekend.

unlv or iowa state:

With only a few days left in his recruitment, all signs look to be pointing to either the Running Rebels or the Cyclones. Both Dave Rice and Fred Hoiberg's programs have immediate playing time available on the wing and both are in need of a scorer. A native of Minneapolis, Vaughn has grown fond of the Las Vegas area and the support of the Rebels program by locals while he's been attending Findlay. Iowa State is close to home, has been recruiting him intensely the longest and features an NBA style offense that appeals to him.

I do still stand by my statement that I'd be shocked if he decided to play in a conference like the Mountain West. I wonder if Anthony Bennett's status as an absolute bust (thus far) will hurt UNLV's chances. Have to imagine it may be a while before a Mountain West kid is taken that high in the draft.

At this point don't care, as quick as he forgot about the Gophers is as quick MN fans can forget about him.

Wow, some people are bitter. It would be interesting if you folks treated all players who attend school out of their home state the same. I'll start a list:

1. Bobby Jackson

2. Willie Burton

3. Voshon Lenard

4. Andre Hollins

5. Austin Hollins

6. Vincent Grier

7. Deandre Mathieu

8. Malik Smith

9. Mo Walker

10. Quincy Lewis

......................

Mychal Thompson

IMO it's really more those who want to be gophers will be loved, those who don't can go **** themselves. Screw this Minnesota nice bull**** you're either with us or against us
