How are we not higher on the list. Top 25 at least and should be top 20
 


here are some of the factors that were used in the analysis:

Ohio State University is the most valuable athletic program, worth an estimated $1.32 billion. The Buckeyes had $280 million in revenue in 2023, the most of any school. Other factors that helped propel the Buckeyes to the top of the rankings are an alumni base of over 600,000, a fan base of more than 11 million, boosters that donated nearly $60 million last year, and a football team that routinely has attendance of over 100,000 at its games.

estimated NIL spending is also part of the equation.

so - total revenue, alumni base, involved fan base, big-money booster donations, attendance and NIL support.

the Gophers - with all due respect - do not rank highly in any of those areas.

FWIW - Gophers are 13th in the B1G in this ranking. teams that ranked below the Gophers are
Purdue
Northwestern
Maryland
UCLA &
Rutgers.
 



Year after year the Big Ten and SEC continue to separate themselves from all other conferences. It is almost absurd that they participate in March Madness and the CFP when they could just own equivalents to them if they wanted to.

I’m not convinced a Big 10 + SEC 32 team tourney would get the same ratings as the current NCAA tourney in hoops


Maybe more true in football. But I think a lot of people watch CFP because their team could be in it someday.
Big 12 fans are going to watch a Big ten vs SEC national title game. But if it’s a separate thing it might not be as true
 


Based on revenue...we should be in the NCAA Basketball Tournament every year. That bar is not that high.
Football needs to recruit higher...at least in that 30 to 35 slot. 8 wins minimum each year.

Momentum would dictate that we lose game 2, since we lost game 1.

Momentum would dictate that Rhode Island beats us in game 2 since they won game 1.

Momentum does not exist in sports.
 

In addition, some of the small or large top higher rated schools don't have to compete will the additional title 9 programs for gender equity that bring in 0 $ and have 4 professional sports teams in the same city.

I don't look at momentum as a physical thing. More of a mental thing or state of mind. PJ saying he doesn't believe in it is all coach speak like forget the last play or the one week championship season thing. Fleck absolutely believes in breaking the other team's will. Look back to all of those long run down your throat drives when Mo was here. Breaking the other team's will by running it down their throat is momentum. How about momentum in the positive. You don't think there was a moment in the Michigan game this year where Gopher players thought these guys aren't that good we can pull this off? Michigan starts pressing (mental state). Fleck himself said that game was a turning point of the season. That is momentum. The players start believing they can win. They stop overthinking and just react and good things start happening. As far as the possibility of losing a future game based on the past, absolutely. We're all human. You don't think kids ever think about the last game they lost (03' Michigan into the Michigan St game. Minnesota Twins in the playoffs for 20 years)? How about having a here we go again moment when a team scores a few times like the last team did. Momentum is mental not a physical thing that can be measured.

Penn State is going to start a 700 million renovation to Beaver Stadium. Huntington Bank Stadium is 15 years old. Can't anything be done to the third deck? Anything? More suites, box seats, a restaurant, a club? Even 5,000 seats and add awnings to trap in the noise. Even a plaza for standing room. Do something to get more people into the seats. This is ridiculous. Lets play like we are big time.

You missed his point he meant the buzz surrounding the team lost steam after the loss. You are dumb if you don’t think momentum exists in sports even PJ probably does it’s part of his schtick.

There isn’t anything preventing the Big Ten and SEC from inviting a few teams from other conferences to participate.

No, momentum in this case is doubt. It is "the proof" to casual fans the Gophers are not good this year.
We are talking ticket sales. Ticket buyers are "show me" kind of people. Beating Rhode Island is beyond expected and does absolutely nothing to sell tickets after losing the opener.

Thanks for laying it out so simply - total revenue, alumni base, involved fan base, big-money booster donations, attendance and NIL support. Based on these criteria, who do you think is trending up and down (why)?

Down - Alabama (no more Saban), Wisconsin (unlikely to achieve previous sustained success), Oklahoma (will be just average in the SEC)
Up - Texas (sleeping giant that now has an excellent coach), Michigan (sleeping giant that seems to have found a decent replacement for Harbaugh), Oregon (NIL), Miami (NIL)

In general, I think we see the SEC valuations slide down a little over time because they will not dominate college football as much as they have in the past. Their fanbases are understandably a little spoiled. It is more fun to root for a winner. On the other hand, my impression is that football is king in the south so, while they'll lose some support, they won't lose much.

What do you all think?

Second question, why is B1G basketball so average? I know this is a football forum, but a lot of you guys know tons about basketball and I'm too lazy to search that whole forum!

Sports Psychology would perhaps better encapsulate the reasons why "momentum" is in fact a thing. Confidence and chemistry matter.
