Utah to B1G?

With the obvious exception of ND, there isn't much out there that brings back more than their share would distribute.

The only difference is that Utah is fast growing market as opposed to Pitt or BC. I guess some of the other ACC teams(UNC, Clemson etc..) would be better, but the chances of that seem a little slimmer lately.

Would the big ten ever dip into the south or south east to try to snag a team for that market?

Bay area is the tenth largest media market in the US.

I always wonder if just the size of the market is the only thing considered or how much the market cares about the teams in question. Bay Area is a big market but the fans in Murfreesboro were more passionate about M. TN State than the Cal fans were when we went to Berkeley.

I think the B1G should bring in both Arizona schools. Phx is the 12th largest market and at the same time lock down the whole state. The way the higher ed system is run in Arizona you aren’t going to just take one school anyway. Both are now AAU schools and probably from a financial standpoint the best pick unless you could poach Texas A & M and Texas which I don’t see happening.

Call me crazy but wouldn’t Iowa state and Kansas be the ones to go after?
teams to go after before them include:
Arizona state or Arizona
Colorado
Texas a&m (long shot)
Missouri (long shot)
Notre dame
Florida State
Miami
North Carolina
Virginia

yes. With the exception of Notre Dame or poaching an SEC school, the next expansion is probably about quantity not quality of games.

We are more likely to see an expansion to 24, 28, or 32 with an expansion of the conference schedule to 10-12 games than we are an expansion to 20 or 22 without notre dame.
With Notre dame I could see 20

Both schools fit academically with the B1G...tons of research. I also think there are a lot of alum from B1G schools who live out there. Stanford brings in another rival of the Irish.

Stanford and Notre Dame would make the most sense. Stanford and Mizzou would be good too.

I think we’re all dreaming that Notre Dame is going to bring their football money to the B1G. When they got AAU certification I thought maybe that was an opening, but I think you’ll see that might have been just a preview to possible future B1G affiliated sports like hockey.

Unfortunately FSU is not AAU so that’s not happening now. I did hear that they might be working on it though. That would open up opportunities in the SE with GT FSU and Miami. It’s not really where I’d like to see the B1G go but of course nobody’s asked me. 🤪🤷🏻

Nebraska isn’t AAU
I think it could be justified in other ways

The big ten is different from other leagues which, in my opinion, makes the big ten poaching from the SEC more likely than the other way around. There are more dollars than just sports dollars.

Maybe FSU, Miami, TCU and GT end up being replacements for the SEC when the expansion is 10 of:
Notre dame
Utah
Arizona state
Kansas
Colorado
Missouri
Florida
Georgia
Texas A&M
North Carolina
Virginia

To get it to 28
Or maybe it’s 6 of those 11 to get it to 24

I just think without Notre Dame it’s not going to 19-23
Have to add a lot of revenue to cut out more pieces of pie. Notre dame or an SEC poach are probably the only ones left who could justify a small expansion.

According to 247 they have nearly 2X composite rated players than MN. Heck we just took a WR commit from there.

UU’s academics are also in line and their fanbase is considered very loyal. They recruit well across the entire west coast too. If it was the absolute last slot I’d hold out but I think there will be another wave and the B1G will add multiple more teams. In that case I’m okay with Utah being one.
Lot of LDS play football

They were when they joined the B1G and had been a member since the early 1900’s. They were removed for the way they reported their research dollars. Their medical campus is in Omaha. Last year they changed and now report all their research under one entity. It’s up to AAU, but I look for Nebraska to re establish membership in the near future. BTW, this is not unlike what was done at ASU with their relationship with Arizona.

Maybe Kansas but Iowa State doesn't bring much in terms of TV.
Exactly this, it's all been centered on TV. Was the case with the last several additions, USC and UCLA for the Los Angeles markets, Rutgers, for NYC, Maryland for DC. Even Washington and Oregon bring in Seattle and Portland.

If it was based on geography, there are so many better choices that would have made sense to add to the Big Ten. Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Iowa State, Missouri, Kansas or Kansas State. Not to mention making a big push for Notre Dame, instead of them being in the ACC.

I would love if B1G added FSU or Miami, massive market and teams. I’m biased as I live in South Florida so it just allows me to see them live every so often

The NBA play in tournament is pretty fun. We could do that for schools that are marginal B1G schools each year. The winners can play in our league for the next year. Play in games:

BYU - Utah
Iowa - Iowa State
Wisconsin - Nebraska - SDSU - NDSU
BC - Syracuse
Stanford - Cal
etc.

I think the big ten is likely to only make an exception for very few universities

Arizona and ASU are both AAU still but expansion to me is about new territory + solid football
major football but great hoops.

Places that fit the bill in no order (west to east kind of)
Stanford
Cal
Utah
Arizona state
Arizona
Colorado
Texas
Texas A&M
Rice?
Kansas
Missouri
Tulane?
Notre dame
Vanderbilt
Georgia Tech
Florida
South florida ?
Miami
Pitt
Virginia
North Carolina
Duke
Buffalo?

Non AAU candidates:
Florida state
Clemson
a major SEC poach like Georgia
Something crazy that gets you into new markets (Boston college?)

As you look at the list, really the only way to make money by adding two (adding money but cutting two more slices) is probably a package that includes at least one of Notre Dame, Texas, Texas A&M, or Florida.

Which is why I see 24+ as the next expansion.
Adding quantity of content instead of top end content

I would love Missouri, Kansas, Candy, or ASU. For road trip reasons.
