Utah State wins MWC tourny over #4 SDSU -- hire Craig Smith now??

OK, tell me this then: do you notice any difference in the geography of the high schools between the recent Madison traitors, and the higher level kids Pitino has landed?
Of course. Suburban, so generally socioeconomically more able to support a kid who goes away for school and to attend and watch their games. Or are you getting at something else?

Mmmmm ... maybe take another crack at it. Sharpen your pencil a bit.

DeLaSalle, CDH, etc. are not cheap schools to attend, mind you.

I'll bite; you tell me.
I don't need to be any more specific than that the defectors are from decidedly not urban locations, and all that entails.

Which is certainly more than "socioeconomically more able to support a kid who goes away for school".

Come on now

U Commits: Urban schools or outstate schools
Treyton Thompson: True Outstate
Gabe: DeLaSalle
Oturo: CDH
Jarvis O: Orono (outlier), but originally was a St. Paul Tartan kid.
Amir: Hopkins
Michael: True Outstate
Jarvis J: DeLaSalle

MN Wisky commits: Outer ring white affluent suburbs
Carlson: East Ridge
Crowl: Eastview
Wahl: Lakeville N
Davison: Maple Grove
Ruevers: Lakeville N
Walt McGory: Edina (Outlier geography wise, but not affluence wise)
Joe Hedstrom: Hopkins (Outlier)
Alex Illikanien: Grand Rapids (Outlier) would've chose U had they kept their offer.

They both go have had certain levels of success recruiting a select type of kid from this state.

Great summary.

Would add:
- Michael Hurt, only Minn, NW, and Nebraska were P6 offers. Other two much farther away and not great bball schools? No Wisc offer as direct comparison.
- Trayton Thompson, also no Wisc offer. Did have Iowa offer though.

Hedstrom - Hopkins is a very diverse district. It has some very urban/inner ring feeling communities in Hopkins proper, Golden Valley, and maybe St Louis Park? And then some very affluent/outer ring feeling communities in Minnetonka. Perhaps Hedstrom was the latter? Could also say, he might've open enrolled to Hopkins as it's one of the top school teams in the state, then he could've lived anywhere. Don't know.

Believe Hedstrom lives elsewhere but not 100% sure. As far as for the outstate kids we will have good shots at them. Sad part is we just don’t have a ton of them that are B1G level. Outstate MN kids tend to be a little more pro U. Thompson’s goal was always the U same with Michael.

Which is interesting because the U campus is about as different as you can get in this state from outstate-rural communities. Maybe coming to Mpls for them is as exciting as going to NYC for a regular person.

So then you wonder what other factors are scaring off/putting off the suburban/exurban kids ...

We are similar or better than all but 3 big ten schools the last three seasons in touney appearances and wins. This despite strong headwinds. All big ten coaches go thru ups and downs with their programs and fans - except Izzo and maybe Painter. Will agree with you, BG, that our roster construction is a concern. Regarding Gard, Badger fans were after him until here at the end of the season - ups and downs. Slow ball is an equalizer and helps him. If Pitino were fired and somehow Gard came available would prefer any of the speculated names over him. Not to take anything away from him, but slow ball is just not a personal preference.
Your entitled that but the Barn would be darn near full for a Big 10 champion and Gard became the 1st coach in history to win the conference without a 1st or 2nd team all conference player. They will be getting even better as the recruiting has targeted great fits. Check out the stats on pace of play and you would find how far up they jump if they would just turn it over quickly 5 more times, Take 5 bad shots and best of all play poor defense to give up a quality shots early in the clock, like not getting back against transition or losing your man. My grandson ran all the data on this and it a way deeper understanding of the game, how you play and how others play. That is why UVA was thrilled with the 30 second clock because opponents had 5 less seconds to get a good shot.

Outstate kids playing at the U is more favorable for their families to see. Tough when you have to drive 2-3 hours for home games alone plus added hotel costs and other expenses. Also they weren't able to be around the U all the time so there is more allure.
