You are correct. Stating the current rank isn't technically dishonest. I used the word disingenuous for that. I'll use dishonest for the 4 of 5 as it wasn't a mistake. It was spoken multiple times by more than one person. Is stating the current rank of recruiting classes being dishonest though? That's like saying they shouldn't talk about being ranked #8 in the country after 9 games because there's still a lot of season left and they may not end up being ranked there when the season is completed.
My point, and it's really just an opinion, is that rankings are highly prone to error and are not a scientific product based on actual measurables.
I think a lot of people can agree on what a 5 star or a 4 star kid might be, but arguing whether a class is ranked high enough based off of an average ranking that ends up being .0020 points higher or lower than a rival probably doesn't mean much difference.
The bigger difference is whether you have kids who fit your program, fit your need, and have the attitude to buy in and compete.
Dear Lord, these types of comments are so stupid. Of course USC is last, they have far fewer commits than everyone else - half or fewer of many in the top half. Their recruiting is certainly down, but when the classes are done in February, they will be 5th or 6th at worst.
I'll start by saying this class slightly exceeds my expectations, and I'm excited to see how this group develops.Recruiting rankings matter to a certain number. Not sure what that number is? But top 10-20 teams have guys who are obviously gifted in some manner...performance on the field, run faster, jump higher etc than their peers and rated 4 and 5 stars.
Then the group from 20 to 50...lots of arguable points to classes fitting philosophies, standards and the needs of your program versus the rankings standards being more important to success.
I agree this can be important and genuine.
However, sometimes it is an excuse to explain away your #43 ranking.
My issue is an AD who says we are hiring a coach to improve our football recruiting rankings. Sure, you always want to improve recruiting but I’d like to emphasize winning.
Come February will we be ranked higher in year 4 of PJ?
And PJ did that this season. And on paper this might be his best class. For me, I guess a lot of that is based on a couple guys being special. The running back looks big time...higher than his ranking.
So, I agree the AD is disingenuous but PJ has us on an upward cycle at the moment so, Go Gophers!
Pac 125th or 6th nationally, or in the PAC12?
No, I meant for me personally...my guess how the guys we signed will perform.I'll start by saying this class slightly exceeds my expectations, and I'm excited to see how this group develops.
Nationally this might be his highest ranked class, but that remains to be determined. As far as ranking this one against his others here at the U, I do not think on paper it will end up better than 2018, and possibly 2019. As far as ranking in the B1G, this class may be 3rd out of his four, and could very well end up 10th.
