USC is ranked last in Pac 12 recruiting

Go Gophers!!
Dear Lord, these types of comments are so stupid. Of course USC is last, they have far fewer commits than everyone else - half or fewer of many in the top half. Their recruiting is certainly down, but when the classes are done in February, they will be 5th or 6th at worst. And it's tough to recruit when everyone thought your head coach was going to be fired. This is equally as stupid as when Gophers writers/fans tout the program's recruiting ranking as of early NSD - sort of like bragging about your team being ahead at the end of the 3rd quarter.

There are several 30-40ish programs recruiting wise who are still filling their classes. Ole Miss, ASU, Baylor, VA Tech, etc.

NW looks like it has at minimum 3 open scholllies to fill.

Early NSD? Our AD & HC tout them during the Summer!

And again in December with a ranking number that’s 5-10 below any where anyone has seen.
Then silent to summer. With a good start in June we can be Top 10 in the country again.

Evidently some of you would prefer we try to sell ourselves shorter during the recruiting process.

"Hey, we're a top 25 class right now, but if A, B, and C, go wrong... hell, we might not even be in the top 40-50!"

I bet that would really sell.

I'd settle for the AD not going on National TV during a Spring Game and saying we currently have 2 classes ranked in the top 20 when those classes are 8 and 20 months from being completed. If he could not do that right after claiming we won 4 of our last 5 that would be super too. I know, I know - marketing, salesmanship, etc. blah blah blah. It is disingenuous at best - par for the course for MC - but yes, I would prefer he try and sell ourselves more honestly.

This class' AVG and points on 247 puts its ranking somewhere around 40 compared to past years.

I mean, you guys realize these statements aren’t for you (the diehards who follow closely) right? It’s for the casual person who perceives we’ve sucked forever and will continue to and that’s why they don’t come to games. It’s a concerted effort to at least try paint the program positively so it catches attention.

Also it is part of the recruiting pitch to the nation. Recruiting is ultimately a constant sales job so you need to be selling your wins wherever you can.

I think recruiting-wise we are trending in the right direction.

The 2021 class should largely be a result of what we did on the field in 2019, a 10-win season.
This will be the first measure to see if winning is helping recruiting.

With that said, one the most recent verbal commitment is a DE from Shakopee who has no ranking whatsoever. That will sink any "average" class score unless it gets adjusted up over the next year.

Given his size and physical abilities alone he likely comes in as a mid 3* at worst when he actually gets evaluated.

Evidently, no one sent the memo to BTN as they were touting the recruiting rankings of the B1G yesterday. Someone better set them straight that they cannot do that until February.

About 15% of top 400 did not sign yet. I see USC is considered about 3 of those 59 players. They will be filling out the class with mostly 3* players. As stated above, hard to recruit when your coach is on a short leash and the country knows it.

I do realize this - that is what annoys me so much. I don't like dishonesty. I really hate dishonesty that is targeted specifically at misleading those that are less informed on the subject matter. That is my major rub with the "marketing" tactics we use.

It's too bad that USC fans don't realize recruiting before February doesn't matter. They seem very upset.

The majority of the recruits signed yesterday. This isn't like the first year where a lot of recruits, especially at the top schools, waited until Feb. Movement will be less significant than in years past.

Indeed, a lot of the unsigned players after this week will be players who have academic qualification issues, so they may end up not signing to a 4 year program at all this year.

USC fans more than (seemingly) some recruitniks probably now understand the limitations of top tier recruiting. Like some other programs around the country USC has not been able to elevate themselves and have underperformed despite highly rated classes, and serial attempts to continue the Pete Carroll coaching tree and culture. The coaching staff matters.

USC seems paralyzed by indecision going on over a year now. It’s a bit surprising the new AD didn’t come in with a new coach in the back pocket.

He missed his sophomore year and hasn't been ranked. This is a silly take by you. You know this, but you like to stir the pot.

I mean that’s fair. I just wouldn’t expect this to change. Selling yourself is marketing 101. And nothing truly is a “lie” that they’re saying. And to those that then look, it is correct. And then it makes us look good. That’s all Coyle cares about

I see five 4* RBs alone with SC offers who have not committed.

My point, and it's really just an opinion, is that rankings are highly prone to error and are not a scientific product based on actual measurables.

I think a lot of people can agree on what a 5 star or a 4 star kid might be, but arguing whether a class is ranked high enough based off of an average ranking that ends up being .0020 points higher or lower than a rival probably doesn't mean much difference.

The bigger difference is whether you have kids who fit your program, fit your need, and have the attitude to buy in and compete.

This I'll agree with 100%. Not every 4 star player is a better player for the Gophers than every 3 star. Also, I think a lot of the issues with stars is many 5 stars are fully developed physically. 3 stars are not. Doesn't mean they can't catch up to the 5 stars but I feel like more 5 stars are ready from day 1.

Poor USC. They are now reaping the scourge of decades long cheating practices. They are a candidate for the dirtiest program ever. Kids do not need to go to SC anymore. Their are better places with better facilities and you don't have to look over your shoulder everyday waiting for sanctions. Anyone remember John Robinson? Top award winner for biggest cheater right behind that guy from Nebraska.

That’s a really good point I hadn’t thought much about before. Thanks!

Is stating the current rank of recruiting classes being dishonest though? That's like saying they shouldn't talk about being ranked #8 in the country after 9 games because there's still a lot of season left and they may not end up being ranked there when the season is completed.

I think if the rankings were assessed base on average star or rating points your scenario would make more sense as an apples to apples comparison. Otherwise it’s as if one team has played 10 games and another only 4 or 5 and trying to draw conclusions (which we of course will anyway).
