And then Jack Hughes losing his teeth and kept going for the goal win -- I'm from Duluth, that's my Northern Minnesota lunch pale type hockey -- you won't see that grit with divas in other sports.
 



Short of the Gophers in the title game, which has ended depressingly the last two times, there is nothing in sports like a best on best gold medal game.

if only we'd actually ended it in a 5v5 best on best.

But from an intensity standpoint, was an amazing game to watch. World Cup knockouts may be the only other thing on par imo
 





Was great! And then last night I watched the Netflix documentary of the 1980 gold medal. Graduated from high school with Eric Strobel (played football and baseball with him), was great to see him and others tell of their experiences. I really enjoyed the comments of Eruzione and Morrow. Didn't realize that Brooks played the role of the prick that completely and ruthlessly. McClanahan had played for him for three years and had never seen Brooks be so harsh. How McClanahan played through that injury I will never know. My wife and I thought some of the guys looked a little old, but she thought that Rob looked like a dapper college professor. Janaszak appeared to be a hell of a guy and awesome teammate. I hope the see Eric at my 50th high school reunion next September. And yes, I remember where I was when "we" beat the Russians.
 

Lol. With the costs of rinks and ice time and schools having limited budgets this is not going to happen. It is a niche sport and always will be. 1980 was a much bigger accomplishment and should have resulted more popularity but that never happened. Just enjoy it for what it is.
 

Gophers were well represented. Michigan tops. On women's side Minnesota well represented, Wisconsin tops.

Duluth cake eaters or Hermantown are probably tier 3 Twin Cities cake eaters.

But the range teams still have something special.

when you're starting with a sport that's only easily accessible in under half the country and expectations/demand is that you play year round, hockey is definitely going to be stuck in being the 4th-5th sport in the US (football, basketball, baseball and then consideration for soccer). it's fun, a bunch of people care for a brief glimmer in time, and then it will go back to where it is for people playing.
It may help transiently boost NHL ratings and Stanley Cup ratings and kids when they grow up will say it meant a lot to them, but no it's not going to be what moves the needle on someone deciding to put their kid in hockey because they saw a kid from a hockey dynamo family score a game winning goal to beat a Canadian team that there's really no outside hockey motivation for this story as much as they wanted to pump stuff about Miracle all Olympics long in our face
These 2 sets have been equal awhile in best on best. Canada's WJC teams have been mediocre for the last 3 years after being dominant in the mid 2000s (since 2010, Canada has 5, US has 5, everyone else 6).
This was a win for what USA Hockey has been for the last several decades in building pipelines and they happened to have a set of guys hit at the right time. They split with Canada in 2010 (best on best), were their equals in Sochi in 2014 but lost 1-0. The short is, bout fuckin time we beat them when it matters lol. Been a long time coming that they've been equals on the national stage, there's just been so few opportunities to actually have a best on best game (I don't think Crosby changes anything other than they maybe score on the PP, they dramatically outplayed us as it was).

I hear you. UMD is a good.college to attend for bright but not elite suburb kids.

In order to get to the level required just to play on a high school team.....kids need to start EARLY. And in that developmental stage.....it's not a seasonal sport. It's year round leagues. Early morning practices and weekends. Not to mention that the equipment costs, especially for growing kids sizing out of their stuff on a yearly basis.....it's just too cost prohibitive for many families.

Meanwhile.....sports like baseball, basketball, and football don't require anywhere near the $$$ or time commitment. Because of that....hockey is highly unlikely to ever overtake any of those three in popularity. Maybe it upends baseball someday (because it's not super exciting.....and the competitive landscape at the major level is turning off viewers).

Every hockey team that won a medal had at least one Shattuck player on their roster. If you want to win an Olympic hockey medal, you need Shattuck players in your lineup.
 

11 Shattuck players in this years Olympics. Everyone seems to forget that in 1980 we beat Russia in the semifinals and Finland in the finals for the gold medal.

The Misogynist in Chief made it political when he proverbially shit on the women's team (and literally shit in his diaper) with his "joke". I get it....you think misogyny is cool. Nobody who's been paying attention over the years is confused about whether you're a feeble-minded chud. It's common knowledge.

I remember when it was a big deal with the chuds that Hunter Hess said that he had "mixed emotions" about representing the country. Well....it's because we have a totally deranged asshole as a president. But said deranged asshole is fine to disparage the gold medal winning women's team for no reason......according to the forum bottom feeders. Funny how that works. Or at least it would be.....if hypocrisy wasn't one of the defining features of MAGA. Again....more common knowledge.

The men hockey gold win is a rare super historic event nearly without par. He is saying women have to.come too, acknowledging them. Settle.down.

He does have a locker room tone. Ok, deduct points for that. Who cares. His past behavior has been outlandish. Deduct points for that.

I do not see him dissing the women team.

Look at him like a late night host addicted to attention since a spoiled child. Stuff comes out of his mouth. He was a TV host. Trump derangement syndrome is real, way reading too much into things.

FYI I have women season tickets, so don't say I am anti-woman, although I rarely go (zero this season so far, although the playoffs...), I am.supportive.

Both the WNBA and pro women hockey are extremely left, substantial LGBTQ, so they almost always would spin it hard.

It is not as bad as some are spinning this, is what I say to those maximum outraged at anything possible.
