UPDATED 5/30: Sid reports Andre McDonald will be in school this summer

Come on people, regardless of his situation, this is a 19 year old kid that obviously needs to get some things figured out in his life. Is it really necessary to kick a man when he is down? We should all hope and pray that he gets his life in order, football is not the most important thing in the world.

Outside of beavergopher's McDonald's shot I don't see a lot of people taking shots at him. Most comments seem to center around being disappointed he is not currently with the team but hopeful he gets things in order one way or another.

yeah, I'm not seeing much rippage, which is kinda nice.

Hopefully he turns it around, but his grades had to be really bad for him not to be on academic suspension following 1 semester of school. Those situations usually aren't when a kid has struggled academically, the school will usually only skip the whole "academic suspension" thing if the student is completely blowing off school.

Now, I agree, I like the way Kill has handled academics thus far, but this was completely out of his control. McDonald is no longer in school. Hopefully he can turn it around, it's happened quite a bit. We've seen it with three of our better players last year in HAgeman, Carter and Stoudemire who struggled academically and had to take some time off. All of those guys rebounded to be huge parts of our team. Hopefully, for the Gophers, the same can be said for McDonald one day.

As far as the snide comment about him working at McDonald's, I always wonder why someone would take pot shots at an 18-19 year old kid whose life is heading in the wrong direction. There is no evidence of this kid doing anything malicious or being a terror to society, he sounds like an immature kid who is blowing golden ticket. At worst case scenario (he never comes back), it's more sad than anything.

Obviously this is bad news, but it is better that he is not apart of the team and figuring *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# out in the Spring instead of the Fall. Also if Kill said he will join the team when he figures things out, that means he WILL be on the team again. Otherwise Kill would just say something like "I don't know if he'll be back, we'll have to wait and see" or something similar. If he is sticking his head out and saying he expects him to be back on the team at some point, he will.

All things aside, this young kid is at a crossroad. His destiny is in his hands. Let's hope and pray he makes a turn around. Right now football is secondary. Coach Kill genuinely cares for his players, and I believe he will be there for him if he is ready to accept the challenges.

We are rooting for you Andre!

I believe Andre had a pretty rough childhood and has adopted parents. You hope this is just a bump in the the road and he gets his issues under control.

From DL65's always excellent recap of the WCCO Sports Huddle:

Coach Kill closed out the question talking about personnel that will be withheld from spring drills:

a) Eddie Olson had ankle surgery and will not practice.
b) Zack Mottla is recovery from his season-ending injury and surgery and will be witheld from the spring practices.
c) Andre McDonald is out; however, he expects to see his return in May.
d) Marcus Jones will practice but it will be on the light side as he recovers from his ACL injury and subsequent surgery.
e) He also said there are a few other players that have similar status as Marcus Jones, however, no names given.

Yep, I hope he does. I've always thought that the one thing Cretin did really well for some of the inner city kids who didn't have the easiest childhood (yes, some of them end up at Cretin), they engrain in them that they have a chance to have a really special life. They can get a degree, playing college football and literally "live the dream", just by doing the right things. Generally, I think it's that sort of influence from the coaching staff all the way through the program that keeps some of these kids who could go down a different path from going down that path. The difference between an immature kid who ruins his entire life and a regular college freshman (for a lot of these guys) is razor thin. I hope Andre figures it out, for himself even more than the U. However, we could really use that physically gifted outside WR to connect with Phil Nelson in the coming years.

I hope Michael Carter can sit down with Andre and tell him everything Tyrone told him. Andre's holding a golden ticket, he just needs to cash it in.

Whats up with this Andre McDonald guy?..................

I thought he had several SEC offers and was this highly recruited WR who was going to break all Gopher records? Is he even on the team anymore? Just wondering. See you all at the game Saturday!! Go Gophers!!:clap:

Andre is on the sidelines for the spring game in street clothes. Staying close to the program.

Whatever it was that happened to Andre, it is good that he is staying close to the program, and hopefully will get thru this personal situation and be able to contribute to Gopher Football. Good luck, Andre.

I thought I saw him walking up the stairs. It sure looked like him, wearing a maroon Gopher football hooded sweatshirt with the number 12 on the front?

1) that shows you what specific recruits mean, not that much until they get here and perform.
2) He is 19 and most of us probably have no idea what his personal life has been. Hopefully he grows up in time to take advantage of his physical gifts.

per Sid:

• Every one of the 125 Gophers football players is eligible and will be in summer school when it starts July 9, including the No. 1 recruit in the state last year in wide receiver Andre McDonald of Hopkins. McDonald missed the Meineke Car Care Bowl and spring practice but he will be in school this summer, and his presence will make the wide receiver position a lot better.

Great to hear!

I believe he had 1 SEC offer from Vandy. He did have offers from Ohio State, UCLA, Arizona, and Iowa. However, Vandy was his only SEC offer.

He was a fairly highley rated recruit.

I don't know if I heard many people say that he was going to break any records.

That said. . .congrats Andre! Hopefully this is the wake up you needed. We went through this with Michael Carter, R. Hageman and T. Stoudemire and they went on to have (or are having) a big impact on our program.

Andre McDonald to rejoin team per Sid

Certainly hope the kid has things figured out and is back on the roster this fall because we definitely need him in our receiving corps. Would like to get it from a additional source beyond Sid though.

Whoops, go ahead and delete this thread mods. Looks like it was already addressed.

"Every one of the 125 Gophers football players is eligible..."

That is also something to cheer about!

Predict Minnesota will have have the best passing attack in the big ten in 2015 when Phil nelson, a 4 year starter will be a senior and 4 star wide receivers Andre McDonald and Jamel harbison will be seniors, actually Harbison would be a junior due to his medical redshirt
