Whoa, hopefully he can get this all straightened out.

Any time something good appears to happen to Gopher Athletics, it ultimately plays out like a curse. What gives? This doesn't sound too good. Leaving the team sounds like a lot more than just a minor personal problem.

Hopefully this turns into Michael Carter 2.0 instead of Royce White 2.0.

Not at all a surprise. Hoping for the best though.

You wonder why some teams love to focus on the running game. I believe it is so that they need less WR's. Drama seems to follow that position around.

Tell that to Iowa.

Guys have issues all the time but anytime it is bad enough to knock them from the roster that doesn't bode well for the future. Hopefully the kid gets his act together but current signs certainly are not positive for his future with the team. He is still young so there is time depending on just how serious the issues are for him to have a wakeup call and still salvage his college career.

I don't know what is "issues" are but this kid had problems since high school. Personally, I don't think the game is very important to him.

24, I have been wanting to say that since we found out about him not making the trip to the bowl game. I agree with you, but I also want to get the story, first hand, officially, and not some frikking rumor mongering, before I pass any judgement.

You are talking about a guy with 10 career catches and I think he may have dropped just as many. He may or may not be a good player. I think you are being a little dramatic.

He needs to get his crap together fast - Wasted FR season. I was so excited when he committed.

STrib blog: McDonald will miss spring practice for the Gophers

http://www.startribune.com/sports/blogs/196215201.html

Go Gophers!!

It is one thing for a guy to not be with the team during spring ball, that happens. It is another when he is also no longer enrolled at the school in addition to being suspended (essentially) from the football team. Obviously I could be wrong as I don't know all the details of the situation but if I were going to put money on it I would say he will never put on a University of Minnesota uniform again.

Tough to say what he would have become, he certainly looked to have some ability and given our very limited talent at the WR position we could have used him but as to his long term upside it was still pretty unkown. Hopefully the kid can get things figured out, would love to see him resume his career at the U but I doubt that happens based on everything that has come out to this point.

Can still redshirt this year if the situation warrants.

Interesting thought and idea. It is not in McDonald's or the football team's interest to have him back until he is ready and willing to do the things that it will take for him to be successful. I thought the following quote from Joe Christensen below pretty much laid out the time table for this to happen. but if he isn't ready this summer, a non-academic red-shirt year, if there is such a thing, as plan B would make a lot of sense.

"What does that mean for his 2013 prospects?"

"A person familiar with the situation confirmed for me tonight that McDonald is not enrolled at the University for spring semester and won’t be be participating in spring practice. But McDonald still has time to get himself back in school for summer session and would be eligible for games this fall if things go as hoped."

One of the things I like about Jerry Kill is that he is very clear as to what his expectations are. In short, you will do it his way or it is the highway. It also appears to me that if the kid is willing to change Coach Kill will be there to help him succeed. P.S. Yes, I know that this all starts with U of M's rules and expectations.

You don't know which came first though. Obviously if he's not enrolled he can't be on the football team. "Personal problems" is pretty cryptic. Probably not "team rules violation" as that wouldn't kick him out of school. Academics wouldn't either unless there was some student code violation. Surely legal problems would be in the public record. And he's not from far away so he shouldn't have to leave school altogether to attend to family issues at home. Thus unless something is being kept quiet it probably isn't anything deal-breaking.

The writing's been on the wall since his missed the Bowl game (didn't even make the trip). That said.. hope was lost for MC as well and look at what happened. Hopefully whatever happens, is the best for Andre first and foremost. I hope his issues are something in his control, thus can be dealt with.

Very true, he's young so he has time on his side but the signs certainly don't seem positive at this point.

Come on people, regardless of his situation, this is a 19 year old kid that obviously needs to get some things figured out in his life. Is it really necessary to kick a man when he is down? We should all hope and pray that he gets his life in order, football is not the most important thing in the world.
