Unheralded Players

I think the entire O-Line didn't get the credit others got. Yes, Cobb is an exceptional back, but
that Line is creating shipping lanes for him. So i'll go the anchor of the O-line.

C-Tommy Olson.

Whatever JK said on the sidelines to the O-Line early in the game worked because they came out angry and hungry. IMO, this is their best performance as a unit.

The O-line certainly is doing a pretty good job; however, Cobb does an outstanding job of taking alternate paths when the hole closes, turning stuffs into significant gains. Give credit to both, but Cobb is really playing at a level the Gophers haven't seen since Maroney; or at least since a healthy Pinnix in '06.

BBC that was and interception should of reviewed it right hand under the ball
Lynn
Wilson is a stud
Mortell
Santos our kicking games have been awful for a number of years
Botchelie ok however u spell it not looking it up lol
Elmore is going to be very good

Great call on Bjorklund. He looked good today and is really an athletic guard.

I think today was Pirsig's best game as a Gopher as well.

Pirsig road graded a guy on one of Cobb's runs. I didn't watch him a ton but he did look good when I did.

Of note, I just noticed in a replay that Laster was the left DE when we recovered the fumble.

I was surprised when JK offered Santoso, but not anymore.

Special teams, offense, and defense all played well for the team win yesterday.

Lots of great names and I agree with everyone's assessments.

Only thing I would add is that Kill and his staff have done a great job building quality depth and getting the most out of the roster by matching players to situations. I noticed that when Claeys took over the defense four years ago, that instead of simply changing the defensive sets, he would match a lot of players to different schemes. That got more guys on the field and over time, these guys have expanded their ability to play well in even more situations. It's a great "walk before you can run" approach with players and I think it builds their confidence, making them ready to assume greater responsibilities. This isn't a rip on Mason or Brewster, but there were times during their respective tenures that it seemed like there were only 30 players on the team.

+1 and this coaching staff keeps more players engaged and focused, ready for anything, no matter how minor or major the role maybe. A true freshman returning punts...remind you of Jones a few years ago now at the Big House? Seems like we have thrown passes at everyone except the assistant equipment managers...better come ready to play in this system, no matter what year you come to the U!

BBC has been great. Murray is so good at this point that teams are avoiding him because their boundary WRs are always covered. He blanketed Funchess yesterday. Having a corner on the other side that can really play is the difference between a nice defense and a really good one. Myrick is a more than competent 3rd CB and when Wells is healthy his versatility has let them run a lot of interesting coverages. But the quiet secret of the secondary is that Claeys trusts his safeties to play man coverage in quarters which lets us bring pressure and mix things up. If an offense can't take advantage of man coverage against safeties then they'll have trouble passing the ball.

Our D is straight up good.

Few things I noticed:

Campbell: sometimes just isnt as aggressive as one needs to be at the LB position. He has the skills certainly but would like to see him take some better angles and also get in on the gang tackle a few times. (Observation from way early in the game, Just kinda looked like he was shying away from some contact). But he is definitely getting better.

Wilson is just a monster. He flies around with such speed and agility it is really fun to watch. Lynn is definitely starting to emulate him which can only be a good thing

Laster was playing DE, not sure on his size but that is interesting.

Elmore and Richardson are names that will be game planned against later this year and for the next 3years. I was elated when elmore moved over, thought that was the right call all along. These two are both so strong and they are only 18. Crazy.

Our Secondary is just a bunch of speedy gazelles with some kick. Everyone tackles so well.

though D Travis could have been called for a taunting penalty and I was not happy. He got lucky. Make your hit, be excited, but you dont need to celly in front of some dudes face.

I love this defense. And I really think that with a year under leidner's belt, we are in the running in 2016 for indianapolis. Gah im jsut so excited to be relevant!

Damien Wilson too and the coaches have said the Campbell will be a first rounder.

I think the comment was more like Campbell has the potential to be a first rounder. He has a lot of work to do to make that a reality though.

Peter Mortell, his punting will go unoticed but was critical to field position in todays game. Botticelli will not be unheralded much longer that dudes a beast.

+08

Mortell swings field position in our favor more often than not. For a team that relies upon a run game.........this is huge. Mortell doesn't get enough credit.

Santoso got 12 points..
Mortell kept giving them lousy field position…
Our kickers are really good..and Santoso is a freshman!

Agree. I usually don't get too excited about kickers, but these guys really contributed tot the win. I'm getting the confident feeling when Santoso steps on the field. His kickoffs were also deep. Great job by the whole team!

Anytime we have a big win like this, the notables stand out. But it takes numerous unheraldeds to make it a true team win.

And in addition the Kickoffs were to the middle deep of the endzone. Touchback. Field position is an under valued asset.

I thought the BIG IF helped Leidner settle in early with two nice catches. Campion, Epping, and Olson had good push and protection for most of the game.
Like the Doctor said, it was a great team effort. The Oline played really well.

Two guys jumped out to me today that may not get much ink:

Joe Bjorklund - When Bush struggled in the first series or two, Joe B came in and played really well for most of the remainder of the game (if I'm not mistaken, correct me if I'm wrong)

Jack Lynn - Lynn has really impressed me for pretty much the entire season as a REALLY good LB with really good instincts. I think he's better than Campbell already, but that's just my opinion. Jack Lynn has been a really, REALLY pleasant surprise this year on a unit that had some question marks coming, particularly with depth.

Who else...?

When they put Joe Bjorklund at right guard, they also inserted Jonah Pirsig at right tackle. They took control and Cobb broke two big runs of the right side. Pirsig collapsed the right side, for the outside run, and not only drove the defensive end out but also took the linebacker on the inside run which Cobb bulled his way to the 12. I think that pounding continued in the third quarter.

When Epping went out Hayes came in. He struggled a little to get going. But did a good job.

Good call on those two.

Botticelli is the obvious choice for me. He was a beast in the run and pass game today.

Dude's a beast and an absolute class act.

I worked the overnight shift last night - couldn't make it to Bierman at 1030... After work, I drove by the complex to try and sneak a peak at the Jug. I recognized Cameron walking by and pulled a quick U-ie. I chirped him "Great game." He was all smiles - very humble. Heckuva nice guy. He took me in to Bierman and let me hold the Jug and take pictures with it.

And he is a walk-on. The productivity we've gotten out of him - forget about it.

I wish him the absolute best of luck and hope he gets a look come April. My new favorite Gopher.
