per the PiPress:

Goldy Gopher will take up permanent residence outside Coffman Memorial Union at the University of Minnesota.

The university will unveil a 6-foot bronzed statue of the university mascot at noon Monday to kick off the 2013 Homecoming Week. The statue will be on the east side of the student union.

The $95,000 statue was paid for by donations from alumni, staff, students, visitors and the Office of Student Affairs and Dean of Students. University of Minnesota graduate Nicholas Legeros created the statue with bronze and maroon granite.

Let me know if you need security, I have a favor I have never call on. If he is still alive Al Palermo and his brother Anthony could make sure no Iowa fan would get within 50 feet. Just Let me know, I'll make a call.

Can we now get some bronze statues of actual Gopher alumni put up around campus?

Bruce Smith (Our only Heisman trophy winner to date.)
Bronko Nagurski
Peter Graves (of Mission: Impossible fame and drama student)
Hubert Humphrey
Harry Reasoner
Herb Brooks
Henry Fonda
Robert Vaughn
Bud Grant
Carl Eller
Kevin McHale
Dave Winfield
Bud Wilkinson
Garrison Keillor
Loni Anderson

all spring to mind.

I'm glad you brought this up. I like the statue, don't get me wrong, Goldy just wouldn't be my first choice. At least the $95,000 didn't come from our athletic budget!

Why not? Everyone loves Goldy, students love Goldy, little kids love Goldy, old people like Goldy. Goldy is the perfect subject for a statue.

Bronko Nagurski

Yeah. We need one of him holding his plow in the air (a la the Clarence Spears legend), using it to point due north to his home in International Falls. I'm not sure if the students still do, but we used to point north for the last line of Hail! Minnesota (the "Northern Star" line).

And what the heck do you know? Our state seal has a guy plowing his field, and the motto "The Star of the North" (in French).

And you know what the heck else? The big dipper constellation is commonly known to be the best way to find the North Star. It is also commonly known (mostly in Europe) as the Plough (Plow). Also, it is also known as Ursa Major (Great Bear) - who the heck did Bronko play for, professionally? I think you all know.

Conspiracy theory rant is over. :) Anyways, yeah I want to see a Nagurski statue.
