In an email to season ticket holders the U states:

Based on recommendations from local health officials and guidelines in place on the state and local levels, there will be a drastic reduction in the number of spectators permitted to attend Gopher sporting events this fall. Current guidelines from the Minnesota Department of Health specify that venues must reduce occupant capacity to no more than 1,500 (outdoor venues) patrons. With this reduction, we anticipate few spectators or no spectators at all at TCF Bank Stadium. Our staff is committed to working closely with government officials to monitor guidelines and adjust policies as needed.

Due to these realities, Gopher Athletics is taking the following steps to ensure its ability to adjust to the changing circumstances around COVID-19. Remaining nimble in our ability to modify the game day experience will lead to the safest and quickest return to athletics events with fans in the stands.
  • If fans are permitted to attend home football games at TCF Bank Stadium, a limited number of tickets may be distributed on an individual, game-by-game basis.
  • There will be no football season tickets. Your status as a season ticket holder remains unchanged, and your season ticket location will be retained for the 2021 season.
  • There will be no season ticket upgrade or adjustment process for the 2020 football season. Seat upgrades and change requests will take place prior to the 2021 season.
  • Gifts made after November 1, 2019 will continue to provide current year Gopher Score points through the 2021-22 athletics season.

This might qualify as the dumbest, most illogical statement thus far. Maybe the powers to be should check with their big ten counterparts. Two months till the first game. Maybe by then we will have the saliva test.

It's not that shocking. MLB, MLS, NHL, and NBA are all playing in empty stadiums/arenas.
 


Sounds like exactly what the St. Paul Saints are doing. They split the stadium into 6 parts, each with their own entrance, concessions, restrooms, etc. so they have 6 separate gatherings of 250 in the same stadium at the same time which is the limit. They started that yesterday so the Gophers will have almost 6 weeks to watch that and implement something similar.

I would assume that the Gophers would let in more if the state guidelines change and that the state guidelines could increase if the Saints and Gophers show they can keep people safe under the current format. But with the state limits, it makes sense to not have season tickets and deal with attendance one game at a time. Better to not start with season tickets and if anyone gets in that's a bonus rather than doing season tickets and pulling back if the state guidelines don't expand.

It's much less than 2 months even with creative rounding. Home opener for the Little Brown Jug is slated for Sept 12, 5.5 weeks or 38 days.

In less than 2 months (Oct 5) the Big 10 season will be half over.

Why do you say this? It's 38 days to the 1st game, not 60. Even if by some miracle we can have full stadiums in 30 days, there will be many season ticket holders who would prefer to skip this season and come back next season. Selling any/all tickets this year as single game tickets makes sense. Anything else would be an administrative nightmare.
 

On the bright side, don't have to worry about tracking kick-off times for Home games that may be less than a week away nor have to obsess about the weather forecasts 2 weeks leading up to heading towards the Bank.

East River Flats parking available? Don't care.

On the down side, my new Gopher suede jacket will have to wait until at least 2021 for it's debut.

Might want to pump the brakes on "dumbest," Pete. I think I might have found something dumber. Not pointing fingers but diid you know that we have our first game Sept. 5 and that there already is a saliva test being used? (Hint, today is August 5 and September comes right after August.)
 

It is a plan which is positive. My seats are since 1982 and I have missed maybe 20 games since then and zero in the last 15 or so years. Over 90 road games I am guessing since I stopped counting a few years ago at around 80. I will be honest, I am ready for a break. No guilt because it is out of my control. This definitely sucks big time but missing a year and watching on TV will energize people like me who spend 10 hours every Saturday going to the game, from lighting the grill to cleaning out the back of my truck. I will be ready for 2021 like the I was in 1982!

Well... I don't think you'll miss any games because there won't be any in the fall.
 

Wonder if the tailgate lots will be open...:p

Otherwise, it's me and the DVR on Saturdays...at least as of today...so I think I'll have a toast to that!

I wish they'd hold a lottery for the 1500 seats. New picks for every game.

I know that's not how it will work but it would be fun. Even 50 spots to the general season tix holders would be fine. Heck even 1 or 2 seats would work...whoever got them would feel very special. I would not hold it against them.

Right now every game is an away game on TV. I can live with that if it unfolds.
 

No need to fret, the BIG football season is still in doubt.
One very interesting statistic in the NY Times from Germany's soccer league was that the absence of fans eliminated 'home field advantage'.
In fact teams did better on away games than they did at home.
