Athlon Sports recently released its 2022 All-Big Ten teams and nine Gophers – four on offense and five on defense – were recognized.
Leading the way was center John Michael Schmitz, who was named First-Team Offense by Athlon. Schmitz, who will be a preseason favorite for the Rimington Award, was named All-Big Ten Second Team last season by the coaches. He has played in 44 career games and has made 23 starts at center.
Running back Mohamed Ibrahim was named Second-Team Offense despite missing almost all of last season because of an injury. Ibrahim, who was the 2020 Big Ten Running Back of the Year, rushed for 163 yards in three quarters against Ohio State last season before leaving with an injury.
Receiver Chris Autman-Bell was slotted on the Third-Team Offense, while tight end Brevyn Spann-Ford was named Fourth-Team Offense.
Autman-Bell led the Gophers last season in receptions (36), receiving yards (506) and touchdowns (6), while Spann-Ford added 23 receptions for 296 yards and one touchdown.
The Gophers had three players named Third-Team Defense in rush end Thomas Rush, linebacker Mariano Sori-Marin and defensive back Tyler Nubin.
Rush led Minnesota last season with 5.5 sacks, while Sori-Marin finished second on the team with 85 tackles. Nubin added 52 tackles and a team-best three interceptions.
Two other Minnesota defensive backs – Jordan Howden and Justin Walley – were named Fourth-Team Defense. Howden made 43 tackles and broke up five passes, while Walley made 29 tackles, recovered three fumbles and made one interception.
