Two Mr. Basketball's going in opposite direction

Dre Hollins has become a stud and a leader. Without him in the second half and overtime we probably would have lost. Has played great the entire NIT run.

Joe Coleman was 2-9 and 2-4 from the FT line tonight. He missed several layups on fast breaks, open jumpers and had lapses on defense.

I bought into all the hype before the season and still have not seen any improvement in his individual offensive game.

Beat Stanford !!

I dismiss this OP as an example of an expert whose only knowledge about the game of basketball is "points scored" to determine the success or failure of a player.

I agree that Joe Coleman could be solid for us but I am worried that his jump shot is not good and he will really have to work on that if wants to be a force for the gophers. You can't always get all the way to the rim.

Completely agree! Joe Coleman is a 6'3' power forward. Unfortunately at that size he is unable to finish very well at the rim against the bigger players. Throwing up wild shots at close range has been the norm for him all year. For a player his size, his strengths should be shooting and ball handling. All of these are his biggest weaknesses. His jump shot does not look very good. Hopefully he will improve, but i'm not nearly as high on him as most people on this board. IMO he will have a decent career at MN. His minutes will go down next year with Rodney at the 3 (with TM back), and more if Lockett comes home.

HE'S A FRESHMAN! Do you expect him to develop a deadly jumper over the weekend? Look at what Austin Hollins was able to do from his Freshman year to his Sophomore year. Give the kid time.

Austins shot has always looked good with great rotation, so it should be no shock that he is getting more consistent and a better shooter. Colemans shot is not very good, kind of a set shot, one foot in front of the other, and not very good rotation. Dude has played his entire life and works hard at his game, and for his shot to look like it does is alarming.

Perfect example of fans ripping other fans for any criticism of this team. It is hilarious. Coleman has difficiencies. He is not a perfect player. He should not be starting IMO. Will he improve? Nobody knows. Did Sampson improve? Maverick? Coleman cannot shot and he has too many turnovers and too few rebounds. He is a backup on a good team. Now...rip me a new one for daring to criticize a Gopher player.

Let's all be really happy that Joe will be a 4-year starter and contributor for this team. He is a solid player, makes few mistakes defensively, and is athletic enough to get to the rim. The finishing will come.

Joe wont be starting over Austin next year - shooting guards need to be able to shoot. Rodney at the 3 puts Joe on the bench.

Great achievement no doubt, and something to be proud of. But then teams realized he couldn't shoot, and started playing him differently. You couldn't find him with a search light for a month.

last seven games Joe over 50% fg% and 3rd most rebounds on team. YUP he cannot shoot or rebound, this kid is terrible for a true frosh and this coleman kid obviously deserves to be ripped by the trolls and have his scholly taken away

Hollins is turning into a stud now and needs to play nearly every minute of the games while Coleman will be a very good player for us in the coming years. I hesitate to say stud because he does have some things that may hold him back like his size but with hard work anything is possible from him. He has the confidence to go against anyone so that should help his development.

Memo to young Joe: "If you hit a million golf balls a year you would be good too".....Lee Travino. Shoot 15-19 footers in the off season till your hands bleed

Coleman has a serious deficiency in his game and its called ball handling. He has no confidence in his ability to dribble the ball in the face of defenders. Good athlete, poor skills...has to spend 10 hours a day in the gym this off-season and get a better handle and shot. I think he has potential to be very solid by his Junior season if he works extremely hard.

So Joe's shot is a bit limited now, it will come and will extend over the years. Though caught out of position at times, he does play decent defense and will harass the other teams bigs at every chance. Joe seems to end up in the middle of every scrum when he's on the floor? Offensively, scoring is inconsistent, but he moves the ball and might be the best passer of the young guards. (Think he was really developing something with RSIII, and hasn't found a similar mate in EE.) This is particularly valuable in Tubby's use-the-clock defensive/offense approach used in most games.

Coleman plays great in the open court and on the fast break, he is decent around the basket and physical around the rim even though he is a bit undersized. He has trouble handling the ball in traffic on the perimeter and shooting a pull up jumper. He is a decent shooter if he as time to get set, he doesn't look comfortable shooting on the move.

He was probably always able to dominate and get to the rim and probably never had a need for the pull up jumper. He needs it now.

That appears to be the case. As far as the future goes, I'm glad he got a decent amount of minutes. It should help him. I hope he comes off the bench next year unless he's really taken a large step forward.

As far as the present - He had about 3 unbelievable games that got everyone Jacked up on Joe until defenses figured him out as an aggressive driver without a shot. He absolutely needs a mid-range jumper to take it to the next level. Offensively, he's often been cringe-worthy since his "star is born" moment. But he's tenacious, a good defender, a good rebounder, and has a knack for being at the right place when things turn to streetball out there - all positives. His high fg% is due to a lot of 1 foot shots.
