Marcus Twitter-

Tubby said this morning that some of his guys have until next Monday to finish some incomplete work. He didn't mention any names.

More from Myron as well-

Tubby Smith says he expects players to get their work in by Monday so that they're academically eligible for second semester.

And

Smith reiterated that he believes every player will be able to play once second semester begins next week.

Two tweets from Myron:

"Tubby Smith says he expects players to get their work in by Monday so that they're academically eligible for second semester."

"Smith reiterated that he believes every player will be able to play once second semester begins next week."

Go Gophers!!

Rest assured they will receive all the assistance they need to meet that deadline.

Even though this seems it could be serious it doesn't surprise me that an athlete would have an incomplete with travel schedules and all.

Could it be there's a bit of an overeaction with all of this?

Tubby will reign over them with a baseball bat for assistance.

Don, don't even say such things. ESPN is already launching a full investigation based on your statement. Tubby-with-a-bat gate would be bigger then Mike Leach-with-a-shed gate.

Overreaction, espically on a message board i hardly doubt that!!!

They have traveled some, but really nothing big since being out in CA. Not sure if that is a valid excuse or not for having imcompletes. More likely it is just being lazy and not handling your class work.

Good one howeda7. That was hilarious. Tubby-with-a-bat gate; Leach-with-a-shed-gate;
GopherHole-with-a-rumor-gate.

Sounds good to me! :)

I will be extremely disappointed if either Nolen or Williams (or anyone else) is academically ineligible for the 2nd semester.

They would let down alot of people, most importantly their teammates and coaches. It's inexcusable for it to happen given the kind of support that's available to them.

Travel schedule? What travel schedule? They were in California over Thanksgiving break (no classes) and then the Iowa and Purdue road games were after the semester was already over. The only road trip that required any missed classes was Miami and that was 2 days. BFD.

How do these guys even get extensions? They were home the entire month of December.

If the player mentioned did not fail outright on the exams, it should not deserve much attention. The athletic department has good rapport with the instructors/professors in keeping track of and dealing with the academic development of the players. It usually takes preventative measures before the academic shortcomings become a major issue or gets so big as to hinder eligibility. Even if things get out of order, there are many legit ways to "address" whatever the issue is.

Hmm... I appreciate the tweets, but other than the deadline this is not new news.

Crud it was 3 weeks or so ago in which Tubby said some fellas have incompletes. I know others have said this, but if all these rumors are regarding that note it was news before it was a rumor.

Lock it up guys. Complete the job.

Because they're special and your not I guess Art.

Let's take into account the 20 odd number of practice hours they put in, weights, conditioning, and so on. And that's just the stuff on the books for compliance. I would bet these guys put in 40-60 hours a week of basketball related activity.

So, if a regular student has to get a job to help pay for school and that requires 20+ hours a week, do they get an extension too?

Lets be honest here

Does a "regular" student bring in millions to the U of M? Do you have a problem with the simple truth that student-athletes are not typical students? If so, don't follow college athletics.

Beside the point. They aren't regular students. If you do an average of two hours study time for every credit taken these kids are at somewhere upwards of 70 hours a week devoted to BB and school.

D1 student athletes are on a more rigorous schedule than nearly anyone else around, period. If you can't recognize that, I don't know what else to say to you.

+1. Student athletes do not have it easy as far as their time commitment goes.

Whatever.

No accountability whatsoever these days.

I don't hear of any football players needing extensions.

If practice time takes sooooo much time away from their studies, why doesn't Tubby allow them to miss practice to get their academic affairs in order. After all, they're STUDENT-athletes right?

Do you think that football players are more "student-athletes"?

Athletes get preferential treatment. Get over it.

#1 - Football does not overlap a semester. Grades are not issued mid season so eligibility will not change in the middle of a season.

#2 - You don't hear about it because it isn't supposed to be public knowledge. No one would have known about this had it not been leaked.

#3 - There have been players released from the football team prior to the season starting due to academic reasons.

I suspect there are many (hundreds) students (not just student athletes) who get extensions every term. Athletics may be one reason, illness is another. Universities are a lot more flexible than people tend to believe.

A few of you might be forgetting the true purpose of colleges and universities. Hint: it's not to promote athletics or make coaches millionaires or coddle student-athletes in any way.

Lol. What a weak response.

Yes. But that obviously hasn't prevented many of us from posting thousands of times on Gopher athletic message boards has it?

yep - been there done it!!
Art - are you just trolling looking for an argument or are you always this way??
Poor Ms. V!!!!

I think they need to hire Samuel L. Jackson to put a lock on the doors of Williams until they pass their classes!
