There are tweets started by Ryan James that Thompson, commissioner of MWC turned the job down. If true not a good start that a name discussed may have turned it down. I hope he turned down an interview and not an offer.

Hopefully no Illinois basketball coach searching circus.

Nobody is being offered now

My understanding is that the committee's job is to narrow the field to four candidates. From that list Kaler will select the person who is to be offered the position. I believe, but could be wrong, that the final four names will become public information under Minnesota law. For that reason, some candidates may drop out in order to avoid disclosure of their name. This can be a problem in recruiting candidates who don’t want their names released until they have the job.

Thought it was final 2 who got named, but otherwise this mirrors what I recall reading.

I'm skeptical. To turn it down implies that the job was offered, and I don't think they are at that stage yet.

Could've just said "If you offer I'll say no" to avoid his name becoming public?

You certainly could be right. The number four I remember could just be the size of the committee. That could be wrong too but the basic process I outlined should be correct.

I do not know Minnesota law, but I think that the rule of thumb in academic settings is that once candidates agree to an on campus interview their name can be released to the public.

Either way, it doesn't matter to me. Edsell turned down the football job, and I'm very pleased with how that turned out.

I doubt that an official (or unofficial) offer was made.

It is entirely possible after some due diligence by both parties that he has been identified as a candidate that would not make the final cut, and thus was allowed to publicly walk away from the process, since his is one of the names that has been thrown out there with more frequency.

My guess, like all the other ones here is pure conjecture, so take it for what it's worth. $0.00.

I think you mean here on the GopherHole.

I hate that morons with a twitter account can start idiotic rumors.,,that are then spread by other idiots. The process for hiring an AD was published and the search group has zero authority to offer any candidate a position. ZERO! Same Sheet Different Day around here...oh, and Tubby is meeting with __________ and Rodney Williams is transferring to Duke and so on.

the information in the original post is flat out wrong. it's hilarious in fact.

This guy did not turn down the job, because it was not offered to him. The "committee" does not have the ability or mandate to offer. Only Kaler can offer. This is utter bull.

He "turned down" an imaginary offer. What a putz.

Thank God this inferior "candidate" is off the table.

Rodney to Duke?

Come on man...he's the number 2 pick in the NBA draft. He's not goin' to Duke. Be serious.

Did someone actually say that Rodney is transferring to Duke?

I'm sure that no offer was made, but because Thompson's name has been discussed, there are a couple of scenarios. 1. It's totally fabricated. 2. Thompson asked that his name be withdrawn from consideration. Thompson would be taking a step back, from a Conference Commissioner to Athletic Director, his job situation being tenuous, put his name into play. It's likely his job situation has stabilized and he's no longer interested. We never had much chance of hiring him so no big deal.

100% true. Doesn't like the fund raising aspect and he will be the new commission of the MWC-Conf USA football conference. I didn't want to start a thread about it because I didn't want to get in trouble.

I'm not saying the rumor is true. I have no idea if it is. But who said he was offered the job by the "committee," and not Kaler?

Because Kaler can't offer him the job under State law without this dufus being a finalist. This is a completely bogus "rumor".

I'm sorry, but this job would be a massive promotion for this guy and he would be completely over his head...

You can say that he's ill-suited for the job, but how on Earth would this be a massive promotion?

I would see it as a massive promotion.

But, then again, I would rather be the athletic director of any B1G school rather than the commissioner of the conference. Being the head of the school's department you have much more freedom to build a brand and play with revenues. You are growing something and get to build practice facilities, on campus stadiums, and play a direct role in the education of young men and women.

If you're running the B1G, your brand is locked in and you're trying to grow revenues, but you don't get to play with the money you make. That cash largely returns to your member universities and while you play an indirect role in student lives, you really don't get to see the progress you work for.

The argument isn't about which job you would rather have. It's about classification of jobs in a hierarchy. Jim Delany is, in essence, the boss of Joel Maturi and all the other Big Ten ADs. By definition, his job is a promotion over theirs. Barry Alvarez being named the Big Ten commissioner would be a massive promotion, by any stretch of the word. Craig Thompson's status is slightly below that of any of the BCS conference commissioners. I could see an argument where you could say moving from a non-BCS conference commissioner job to a Big Ten AD spot is a lateral move (at best), but on no planet is it a "massive promotion". Sorry.

I'm sure that most of us would rather be Tom Brady than Bill Belichick, but that doesn't mean Belichick taking over as Patriots QB would be a "massive promotion".

wels0081

Well said wels0081. I can tell by your comment that you like to "operate and manage" things. Better yet, you want to see results and make a difference. You probably make a lousy bureaucrat but for sure you would hate being one.

Conference Commissioner > Athletic Director

Your argument isn't showing in anyway how Athletic Director is a promotion from Conference Commissioner. If you look at pay, here are the comparisons between Thomspon and Maturi
Maturi's $351,900 annual salary
Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson, $597,000

There was an article saying what the school would be the new AD, and wasn't it somewhere in the 400k range?

Wasn't Kaler the only candidate for the Prez. job? Maybe the committee and Kaler wanted Thompson to be the candidate and he said no. I started the posted just based on twitter rumor I saw. That doesn't mean I believe it as fact. Chances are it is nothing since media hasn't picked up on it at this point. Ryan James is a writer for GI and involved in the basketball community.

Either way, it doesn't matter to me. Edsell turned down the football job, and I'm very pleased with how that turned out.

I have heard people within the athletic department say Kill was the only one offered the job.
