TV Viewership

In some ways I kinda loath the pseudo insider business talk that goes on around sports. Like yeah I get it, there's some aspects not wrong here, but it's also after the fact OBVIOUS observations, and IMO not really anything about the sport I enjoy watching.

Example: if the PAC-12 had capable leadership in the past couple decades then none of this would have happened either, but the tweet makes it sound inevitable, but it wasn't ...

100% agree. Real knowledge would be reflected in having predicted this before it happened. This is just using statistics to make unpopular decisions seem sensible and obvious.

There isn’t much doubt that - on average, people are more interested in those teams. I can’t help wonder if the viewership numbers aren’t elevated some due to those teams always being televised. How can’t a team like Notre Dame have a high number of people watching if they’re on every Saturday.

Okla being second was surprising to me. I rarely watch them.

They want super teams viewers want to watch. That drives ratings. Others have mentioned that. It is good for revenue streams.

For Minnesota, playing those teams is not bad. Fun games against teams we want to watch as long as they are not blowouts.

I wouldn't bet Alabama stays number one for long now that the GOAT coach is gone. They'll still have high viewership, but all teams have people that jump on the bandwagon when times are good...or great in the case of Alabama.

do people watch these teams the most because those are the teams they want to see......

or do people watch these teams the most because those are the games that are on TV?

If you had some kind of "total choice" package where you could choose the team you wanted to watch, I wonder how different the pecking order would be? Sure, there are fans who would choose to watch the #1 rated team, but there are also fans who would choose to watch their favorite team, regardless of where that team is rated.

Some may watch because they are typically top 25 teams and want to see if they get beat. I think ranking has more to do with who the team is. If Alabama is #25 their viewership is going down.

Correct, it goes across....

Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, Michigan, Clemson, Notre Dame.....then Oklahoma (7th).
OK help me out here? Graph shows Okla has 68, Alabama has 50 OTA games in that year span. Irish 1st Okla 2nd Ohio State 3rd.

A sub-argument is that a select few are gobbling up everything. Ratings, viewers, top players.

Poor Minnesota kicked to the curb. We want an NIL salary cap.

But remember Minnesota gets to play those teams. Being in the Big Ten is actually the gravy train. Just don't be bad like last season. More like the one before or the one coming up.

Ah, sorry, I see what you're saying.

I thought you were talking about the total viewers graph, which shows them 7th in total viewership.

I didn't even see the other one on OTA TV games. Sorry, I missed what you were referencing.

Yes, Oklahoma as the marquee team of the Big 12, which had deals with ABC and FOX, got a bunch of OTA games in a 10-team league. Oklahoma against anyone in the Big 12 was probably the best game most weeks in that conference (only half joking).

So, I guess I'm less surprised surprised about Oklahoma being second, given the way the TV network contracts were.

Many marquee games in the SEC are often times prime time ESPN games, likely pushing OTA numbers down for some of the top teams there.

You would think that putting the games/matchups most likely to be watched on OTA would generate the most revenue and eyeballs, so I always wonder how they decide who to put on OTA. Maybe the eyeballs don't change much for OTA games regardless of the matchups as long as they are top teams?

I only watch Gopher games and nothing else. My time on Liverpool and the Loons takes a chunk out of watching other college football minor league schools.
