I get a kick out of these people who write to the editor about their shock about Tubby's salary. We should be paying surgeons and professors that money. Not a coach they say! They forget or just do not know that Tubby will bring in much more money than what he's paid yo the U!!!!

They're obviously people who know nothing about sports or the sports businesss.

And I think we understand the difference that a great coach can make verses a not so great one. Definitely worth the money.

Hmmm. Paying people what they are worth to a business! Yes, a good idea! Tubby is worth every cent.

From an article when Monson was hired:

Monson's contract includes a base salary of $150,000 a year with a supplemental package of $340,000 per year. He could also receive outside income worth hundreds of thousands more from shoe contracts and basketball camps.

He made more than surgeons and professors but a lot less than Tubby. However, you have to look at attendance to games, apparel, booster contributions, and more. Sports is a huge business and I don't know if people realize this.

I recall reading some quote from Maturi (maybe someone can refresh my memory) - but I believe he said that had it not been for the surge in bball tickets sales, which were far greater than they expected, the athletic department would have been in the red again this year...which is obviously due to Tubby.

People that don't understand the compensation don't understand capitalism. Wage rates are determined by an economic value to the employer rather than some perceived value to society. Some people choose to measure their worth in money, some people are more altruistic and feel their worth through doing something for society, and some are just fortunate that what they are passionate about makes a lot of money for somebody else.

Not that it matters, but I believe there are a handful of U of M professors/doctors/researchers who make A LOT more than Tubby when you factor in their royalties from research they are conducting at the institution. A handful of professors have developed drugs, medical devices, and other things that have not only meant millions to them personally, but multi-millions to the University, too. Those royalties are private and not factored into the "state" salary that is published for professors, etc. Also, some of the "U" surgeons and doctors have other private practice income, as well.

Tubby Smith is well worth his salary. The only regret that I have is that a football coach of equal stature, reputation and salary demands as Tubby Smith was not hired to replace the former football coach. They paid the former football coach millions and millions of dollars to "go away..." I fear that prexy b and maturi have it all backwards in regards to the football coaching situation as opposed to the Men's Hoops coaching situation.

Are you really trying to do this on the basketball board?

If it makes good financial sense to hire a well respected, experienced, high salary coach for basketball, it also makes sense for football. Men's Hoops, Hockey and Football are the only three revenue producing sports at the University of Minnesota. Those three sports have to raise money for all of the Non-Revenue Sports and Title IX Sports at the U of M. The state legislaors currently provide a lot of money for the Athletic Department to help fund these Non-revenue and Title IX sports. At many of the Big Ten schools, they are on their own as far as raising money from their two or three money makers and their state legislators don't contribute a dime. Hence, Ohio State LOST money in their athletic department even though they have a money making men's hoops program, hockey revenue AND a kick-butt football revenue machine, the likes of which the U of M and the other Big Ten schools, other than PSU and Michigan have NEVER seen.

The U of M Football Program needs to have a coach of equal status, renown and ability as the the Men's Hoops Program IF the Athletic Department is ever going to pay for itself. With the current budget problems in the state, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Governor start using the line-item-budget cutting power to start trimming the U of M budget big time. I believe our Governor has a leaning towards those kinds of actions at this point in time.

I just think that since the discussion here was talking about how beneficial Tubby's pay-package of over two million a season has been that it would be a good idea to do the same thing in the Football Program. The Football Program has even MORE untapped contribution potential than the Men's Hoops Program has! It is a good thing to be thinking about heading into the third year of the contract of the football coach. They have to "plan ahead" in the
administration and in the Athletic Department. The time to plan is now!

Jesus. I thought the one place save from Wren was the basketball board.

I'd also like to see proof of the quoted claim. I'm not sure I believe that.
