Tubby's "motivation," "lighting a fire?" hm...

Sometimes a Coach has to be a real S.O.B. to wake kids up, kind of like being a parent. Who the hell knows or cares if it worked, we won the damned game over the Dickeyes from Iowa.

Must be fun going through life with planned excuses to assure you can't be wrong.
Actually isn't an excuse at all. I'm not trying to be "right." I'm just saying, that in my opinion, a coach calling out players publicly is good for drama in the media, but really don't think it affects a kid's game on whether or not he scores 2 pts vs. 13 pts. I'd say it's more what kind of a night they're having, whether or not they're playing OSU or Purdue vs Iowa, etc. That's all.

Who cares if it "worked" or not - we won.
Agreed on the final result. We needed this W badly. I was just saying that we didn't appear any different in the first 10 min of today's game vs IL, or OSU, or any other game IMO.

I understand what you're saying, but I think that if there was truly a fire lit, they would've come out with it (which they didn't for the first 10 min of the game).

I don't think we played harder/better because Tubby decided to rip a few players. We were due for a good game, and we weren't playing OSU, Purdue, or IL.

We were playing Iowa, and an Iowa team that couldn't hit the broadside of a barn. We could play the same way we did against IL and still beat Iowa by 10.
Playing like men, which Tubby challenged them to do, is a 40 minute assignment. Hopefully even longer!

Pretty much summed it up actually.

I don't think win or lose, Tubby ripping a few guys will make them play any differently. In my opinion, it didn't look like Iverson, Williams, Hoffarber, or anyone else was playing any different tonight than they were in the IL game.

The only difference, IMO, was that we were playing Iowa, and Matt Gatens and Aaron May were guarding Rodney, not Mike Davis, Jereme Richmond, E'Twaun Moore, or David Lighty. Little bit of a difference there.

I have to disagree, I thought they played harder and smarter.

I think the effort was pretty darn similar from pretty much everyone...and yes, we played "smarter" tonight.

I don't think we'll agree on this, but I think it's much easier to play "smarter" when you're up 15 against a horrific Iowa team that has no chance of coming back vs. during crunch time against Purdue, OSU, or IL where you're down 5 against some of the best athletes in the country holding, clutching, grabbing, and blocking your every movement.

Who will you look "smarter" against, Zach McCabe, Matt Gatens, and Andrew Brommer or Jared Sullinger, JaJuan Johnson, Mike Davis, E'Twaun Moore, David Lighty and William Buford?

The difference is you can make the same "smart" play, but the athleticism and team defense of an OSU, Purdue, or IL can make up for one mistake on a possession. If you're Iowa and screw up a defensive decision (positioning, gambling on a steal, etc.), you simply don't have the talent to make up for it and finish with a successful defensive stand.

That's the real difference IMO.

That's fair. I understand where you're coming from.

Thank God. Otherwise we'd be subjected to reply after reply from you saying the same thing. You went with something way too soon and now you look sort of silly and won't let it drop. If you're as astute as you think you are, you'd know a lot of games in this league start out with teams starting slowly figuring things out. We dominated on the road. Ya, it was Iowa, but we can't be picky at this point. Rodney, Colton, and Trevor all looked a lot more involved. We played harder; we played smarter; we won, but to your discerning eye we weren't any different. We got it.

You'll have another chance to say you're right against Penn State when we get to do it all over again.

So if you think it doesn't contribute to wins or losses, when why start a thread about it? Just eat your crow and let it go. You jumped the gun with your thread. You should've waited until after the game before you started this thread. And this is same the same Iowa team that took Wisconsin to overtime. It's the same Iowa team that we barely beat in the The Barn. So give credit to the team and the coaches and give it up already.

Ok, so does this mean when a more talented team beats the Gophers, you won't be here bitching and complaining? Since games are based on talent and nothing else, we don't wanna hear you complaining if the Gophers lose to Illinois, OSU, MSU, Purdue, etc.

This is the last I'll comment on this, because there isn't any worthwhile being added.

I didn't jump the gun with my thread; the first 10 min of the game was my entire point. I don't care if we lost by 20 or won by 30, I said I didn't think we came out with any different "fire" or "motivation" than we usually do. The first 10 min were actually quite pedestrian, and downright ugly. Scoring 6 pts in 10 minutes is not a pretty sight. I didn't see a different level of ferocity or anger from anyone on our team, much less the ones that were called out. We got better after that, however, I think that if we really were going to "react" to Tubby calling guys out, we would've seen a different effort from the start.

RE: your second bit, I don't "bitch" and "complain." I'm not a troll, nor a negative person. I've been on here for 7-8 years, check my posting history. And the second part, I'm sure I'm following you, but I'll drop it. I'm definitely giving kudos to the guys for the win (noted in my other posts/threads I started after the game). We disagree on Tubby's actions and how they affected our team, but I think we can all agree that it was a big win, with many positive signs from numerous players.

Great recovery... keep up the excellent threads
