Tubby Smith says he felt he stayed too long at Minnesota

No where did Tubby say he stayed too long at the U. They did beat a top ten team while the U did not beat a team ranked in top 20

Tubby knows not that of which he speaks.

As said a couple of years ago and consistently since then, Texas Tech will be ugly with Tubby. It's just a matter of how soon and how bad... awful.

Teague was put into a bad situation with regard to the extension he gave Tubby... but he allowed both that one and Borton's when he could have made a stance. Troubling.

They were uglier the previous 2 seasons before tubby rpi 241 and 214, vs 130 and 184

Tubby has a real weakness with his public persona. True or not, the perception among fans was that he was not fully engaged as a coach the last few years. Surviving a "dip" is much easier when it looks like you are working your tail off. Mason suffered a similar fate.

per USA Today:

Tubby Smith calls it "The Dip." It is that turning point in a coach's tenure when the trajectory of the program, at least in terms of public perception, steers downward, whispers from critics turn to shouts and Internet rumors spread like wildfire.

When a coach's name begins to circulate as one on the so-called hot seat, it's hard to reverse course, much like swimming upstream. Smith felt he stayed too long at Minnesota and that, in the end, not even a victory in the 2013 NCAA tournament proved enough to save his job.

"Whenever you hear those rumblings, you have to make sure to keep your ear to the ground," Smith, now at Texas Tech, told USA TODAY Sports. "In every organization, when you see things change, it's already coming down, it may be too late. You've got to be proactive. You've got to know when to move."

Go Gophers!!

Tubby and I agree.

The 2009-2010 team falling apart with Royce and Mbakwe's suspensions and Nolen's acaadamic issue was the turning point. That could have been a Sweet 16 team. The 2010-2011 team could have as well, but Joseph's transfer and Nolen's injury de-railed that. Tubby never recovered. Open scholarships were filled with marginal Spring recruits and the last two Fall recruiting classes were awful. If the 2010 team doesn't de-rail everything is different. It happened. Move on.

I should buy some lottery ticket today. I expected Grant to get fired and he did. I expected Alex Foster to transfer and he did. U of M and TT possibly play next year with tons of young players in each team.

Me too man... I expected the sun to come up today.... IT DID!!!!

I agree with much of the above, but Pitino has had many of the same problems in only his second year. McNeil (much like White) got in trouble with the law. Martin and Ellison (much like Joseph) either did not get along or like their playing time and transferred. I believe the loss of Martin and McNeil this year was huge to our bad season and we were relatively injury free.

I think the loss of McNeil hurt the team quite a bit, as the season progressed it looked like he would have been starting and probably contributing quite a bit, he was everything Morris was not, good fundamentals, played good defense, efficient in his shot selection, really improved from the year before, not as big a scorer as Morris but did a lot of the other things.

The loss of Martin is going to hurt next years team, you are starting over with what is very likely a spring recruit that might have been recruited in the fall, and he had potential, it was all potential but in a couple of years he might have been special.

Not too funny. This board used to have really funny posts. I used laugh so loud in the office and show them to my coworkers. This one wasn't one of them. Belmont is doing well against UVA. I picked UVA to play KY at the final.

ouch man... Wasn't trying to be funny, I was trying to be as equally obvious as you. Predicting a coach would get fired and a recruit to transfer would put your in line to be a weatherman not a successful gambler.

That top 20 team just lost to UAB yesterday...

Ever hear of the phrase: "Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in awhile."?

Gophers beat Michgan State at East Lansing and MSU just advanced in the dance. What's your' point?

Iowa st was rated 9th when Tech beat em....signature win... Mich st unrated when gophs beat them...do you dig now?

We lost 5 games by a total of 9 points that year, including a pair of one point home losses to Big Ten co-champs Michigan State and Purdue. If Royce White and Trevor Mbakwe had been able to play that year, I think we would have competed for, if not won, the Big Ten title, and Tubby might still be here.

Idk about the AP, but Michigan State was ranked 25th in the coaches' poll when we played them.

Iowa State >> Michigan State at East Lansing? Why you don't say. Brilliant analysis.

I have mentioned this before: Tubby didn't only have a bad coaching record in the second half of the Big Ten schedule, he had the worst won-loss record of any Big Ten team in the second half of the conference schedule. In my estimation that is not a 'dip' but rather a 'systemic' problem with his coaching while he was here.

Tubby is GONE!!! Can we concentrate on the future instead of sharing unchangeable past.

It's the same things said over and over again, repeatedly, time and time again.

GO PITINO!

It is the past but Tubby is a relevant topic because if not for what Tubby did here Pitino would not be the coach.

I dig the fact that the Gophers beat MSU at Lansing for the first time in over a decade and I dig that MSU is moving on in the dance while ISU is gone and Tubby is whining. That's what I dig.

I dig the fact that TTU was horrible, much worse than the Gophers. That's what I dig.

But hey...good for the one win. Like Tubby did here in Minnesota, it's probably just enough to get him another year on his contract...

I love Tubby, he can milk money out of turnip.

It is the past but Tubby is a relevant topic because if not for what Tubby did here Pitino would not be the coach.

Not to mention it's a thread with Tubby in the title and it's four pages long...guessing it's relevant.

A very relevant topic - but one thing that Tubby wasn't good at was communicating to both the media and to fans. And when he did, it was hard to understand what he just said imo..

As always great post Tiny. How many time have we heard that Gophers offense was not working this year. When will you start bashing Richard for that. Maybe never. You were among those who created the culture of negativity. I can only imagine how many letters you sent to the AD in addition to all of your wonderful posts here.
Huh? Actually Tiny makes a rare point. Part of Tubby's downfall was his stubbornness in refusing any kind of changes in his coaching staff - this was very true at UK, and at the U of M. This had a bigger impact on his demise than any weird letters from fans you are imagining.

...a tendency to fail to complete sentences...

It is the past but Tubby is a relevant topic because if not for what Tubby did here Pitino would not be the coach.

While it may be a natural reflex to compare a current to a past coach, Tubby's firing and Pitino's hiring were two different events. Tubby's firing created an opening for "a" coach, not necessarily "this" coach, so being dissatisfied with Tubby does not indicate that one must be satisfied with Pitino. It's not like breaking up with one person for the purpose of dating a specific other person.

C'mon Pitino....secure some more top recruits - let's get this ship sailing full steam ahead!
