per this tid-bit from Sid:

Tubby Smith believes Bryant Allen, the two-sport athlete from Maplewood, Mo., has the potential to help the Gophers men's basketball team as well as the football team. "He's got a lot of potential. He's as quick and as athletic as anybody we have in our program, and he can really shoot the ball," the coach said of Allen, who has seen brief action on the hardwood this season, playing in four games after reporting late because of football. "This is a kid that was the state of Missouri's leading scorer, won back-to-back state championships, the leading steals guy in the history of Missouri basketball, so he's got a lot of talent. I know he has a lot of talent in football as well, I know Tim Brewster and his staff are excited about the future of him in football as well. We like the way he plays. It's taken a while for me to get him in some playing time because Justin Cobbs has been playing extremely well, and he's a point guard. I think he can be very, very helpful to us." On the football field, Allen saw most of his action as a punt and kick returner last season.

Go Gophers!!

Thanks for the quote. Cobbs has been playing extremely well? Idk about that one.

Translation = Cobbs is still a better option.

In Tubby's eyes, True.

Then why does Allen play the Point when him and Cobbs are on the floor at the same time?

My guess is that Tubby wants to observe Cobbs at the 2 to see what he looks like there in a scoring mentality. Meanwhile he wants to find out if Allen can play the point if needed. Ideally you wouldn't play them together because of size, but it's junk time and a chance to get them on the floor.

Maybe Tubby was referring to playing well in practice. It's obvious Allen is very quick and athletic. If he was on the team all year and worked on his basketball skills year around, I wonder how good he could be. Is there any chance he eventually drops football and plays only basketball(especially if we don't sign Cory J).

So why has he only played four games this year??

He didn't join the team until Jan., therefore he didn't have any idea of the system until Jan. and probably had not worked on his basketball skills since last spring.

'baller' was spot-on with the Allen call.

gopherjake is going to gag on cheez-its when he reads this..

Allen flying down the floor with Rodney & Carter filling the lanes... omg!!

My guess is that he has given up on Cory Joseph and sees Allen as a viable alternative at point guard. Hard to do both football and basketball though. If he is going to be a significant contributor it is my guess he would have to give one up.

Wow, what is with all of the Cobbs hate? He has played well for a freshman.

Allen

I watched BA warm up prior to the Purdue game, and his shooting was lights out. Add to that quickness, and he has the tools to be a major contributor. When he was put into a ball-handling role against Michigan the other night, though, he looked lost, and the offense was rudderless. He would definitely have to make a commitment to BB in order to help the team win.

The guess is wrong. Gophers probaby in his top 3 schools and have as good a chance as other 2.

Agreed. Pretty hard to be a major contributor to a team when you participate in only 'half' the season, plus spend your off time concentrating on another sport.

If all he's going to be on the football team is a kick-returner (and not particularly impressive at that), I'd rather he drop football and take one of the open basketball scholarships. You can definately see potential there, but it's never going to develop much if he only joins the team in January.

First off, "baller," your referring to yourself with the name "baller" pleases me. Your "insights" notwithstanding, you are really starting to grow on me.

I took a quick look at the season stats to see if Tubby's words match reality. I found this out:

In 17 games, Bryant has played 11 minutes. Tubby was the head coach for all of those games, presumably deciding who the best players are by distributing minutes accordingly.

Allen flying down the floor with Rodney & Carter filling the lanes... omg!!

He definitely is an athlete. And Tubby obviously sees potential. But, as mentioned above, I think those statements have more to do with keeping Cobbs and Allen on board the program than anything at this point. A little fatherly love, so to speak.

Completely agree. Since so many players leave early today, and one-and-done players get all the attention, more is expected of freshman today than in the past. The fact is, it's rare for a freshman to come in a light it up. Cobbs has had some bad games and some very ugly plays. He's also looked pretty solid at other times. In other words, he has been a typical freshman. I think he has been much better than most on this board give him credit for.

Tubby would have to be a massive dick to give Bryant a basketball scholarship.

To who? Brewster? If it becomes apparent that the kid's a better basketball player then football player, I don't see what the big deal is. Obviously you leave it up to Bryant. We're not talking about Seantrel Henderson here. I'm sure he'd go to Brew before-hand. Who's to say he wouldn't want another scholarship freed up to offer a 'tremendous' recruit?

If he flames out on the football field, sure. But if he were to make an announcement in a month that he was giving up football, then no, Tubby would be wrong to provide him a scholarship and enable the decision.

plus who would you rather play for Brewster or Tubby? Its a no brainier.

As you may or may not know, BA clocked a 40 in 4.30 seconds. If he can make some big plays returning punts or catching passes, that kind of speed will be his ticket to the NFL.
