Just a heads-up: Tubby on Sports Wrap (ch. 5) at 10:45 p.m. tonight if you're interested.
If you could recap it later tonight that would be great.
Nothing really new but still pretty interesting. Came in a little after it started but Tubby talked about kids not being patient or realistic or satisfied to stick with it. I assume this was a response to losing players to transferring. Again, the only mistake he took responsibility for was by backing off and not being tough enough. The players lost their confidence and aggressiveness because of his approach. But he had to do it because he didn't have the athleticism and quickness up front to play his style. Obviously, Joe should have asked him why he had failed to recruit that type of player. He never called Blake out. Tubby just wanted some senior leadership.
He doesn't need a practice facility. We need it to stay competitive. He still has the passion and the energy. Jim Calhoun still has it as does Jim Boeheim. Obviously, not satisfied with last year. Felt they were very close and then Al got injured. First time in 17 years he hadn't been in post-season.
What was interesting to me was when Joe asked him about other jobs. He said something like couldn't you just say you intended to retire from the University of Minnesota and end all the rumors? Tubby said, "No. Because I might not retire from here." Then he became a tad disingenuous and said, "The University might not want me." Also, "Why put yourself in a box," and something to the effect that he had expected to be there until he quit at everyplace he had been. He finished that part by pointedly noting that Tulsa and Georgia were still in fine shape even after he left.
Several things, folks. Not too much doubt Tubby listens to other offers. I'm guessing he sets a pretty high price and people haven't met it. Now, schools might decide he doesn't warrant the price and he's not desperately looking to bail, but I think weren't pretty naive if we can't see Tubby playing the power coach role to the hilt. That includes leaving if his price is met. No proof--just a feeling I've had that got a lot stronger with this interview. And I'm thinking it ain't going to make a hell of a lot of difference whether Tubby signs an extension or not. If he wants out, he's gone--extension or no extension. (Disclaimer-just my humble opinion)
The other interesting to me is why Tubby did this interview along with sitting down with Myron and Marcus. He said the criticism doesn't bother him because he never pays attention to it. Thank God, Friend of Tubby is no longer living in GopherHole because Tubby said he never pays attention to what's on the internet either. Imagine how crushed FOT would be if he had known Tubby was oblivious of FOT's love and loyalty. The fact he's made himself accessible sort of indicates a need to defend himself. He is pushing for a practice facility but IMO Tubby also wants to remind us how really lucky we are to have him. I still feel we're lucky but, somehow, I admire him a little less.

Thanks for the summary Mulligan.
I wonder if part of this Tubby Interview Tour is related to contract/extension negotiations.
If Tubby feels like making an off-handed casual verbal commitment to retire from the U results in a "Why put yourself in a box," attitude, perhaps Maturi should take that into account during contract/extension negotiations.
