Tubby: "I don't have any plans to do that (leave), but I'd never say never."

A 61 year old coach who at best as a 'average" record over the past 5 years is not a hot comodody.

You've got to be kidding me! A three week extension @ $800 per should just about get it done.

In all seriousness, even for the people who still believe that the last five years are somehow not a predictor of Tubby's future performance at the U, this is a pretty painful and unfortunate situation that neither side wishes to be in. I suspect that the folks at the U would like to go in a different direction but they don't want to pay Tubby $2M to go away. They would be thrilled if someone took Tubby off of their hands. I'd guess that Tubby has gotten tired of the criticism but he's not about quit and walk away from $4M over the next two years. It's a mess.

Like you - I have been discouraged often these past two years with the play on the court. However, these last several games have given me some hope that we have a solid squad next year. Unless we have unexpected post season transfers I think "it's a mess" is a little strong. Haven't you seen some good signs Jamiche?

What else was Tubby supposed to say? He was honest. If he wasn't, you same ridiculous people would bitch that "oh he's just saying that, why doesn't he be honest!?"

Yes, but it's like someone who hasn't eaten in a week being given a morsel of food. It seems like a banquet when, in fact, it's just a morsel of food. There aren't enough signs to give me confidence that Tubby can escape mediocrity here. He's had five years. That's a fair chance.

And yet, just last January he had a top-15 team that looked poised to compete for a Big Ten title, prior to Al Nolen breaking his foot and Devoe Joseph inexplicably quitting, both of which led directly to an inevitable collapse.

I'll reserve my personal judgment until he gets a full season in without a bunch of distractions from drama queens and without injuries to his best players. If the team comes back that shouldcome back next season, I think they have a chance to be pretty good.

We're kinda beating a dead horse with all this as we've discussed it so many times. But...
1. You're making a lot of assumptions there.
2. Things aren't ideal right now, but it's hardly a mess.
3. To me, the last five years have not been a failure. I'd say the first 3 1/2 years were pretty successful. That's why I think he deserves another year for sure. Like others have said, hopefully we don't have any key injuries or transfers and we'll see what happens.

Exactly. He had us on a pretty steady upward trajectory until January 2011. Lost two upperclassmen point guards, led to a very disappointing finish. This year we lost our senior leader and All Big Ten power forward, in addition to having Mo out for the entirety of this season, pretty disappointing as well, not as much so because we never got the impression that we were on the verge of greatness before bad luck struck again.

Prior to Nolen's injury, we were headed in the right direction. Without major injuries, maybe we can get headed back that way next season.

The hate on tubby is a little much on here at times, but in this thread it's unbearable. Building a program takes time, the MN area is getting a lot more talent than years prior, and if Tubby can get the ball rolling here the next couple years with top 5 big finishes, he knows he has a chance to build something. But I suppose some of you will find a way to give credit to someone else, when some success is had.

I'm all for giving Tubby another season. If we finish 10,11,12th in the Big 10 again, I really think it is going to be about "that time". However, I do think Tubby should get another season. Our biggest problems haven't been problems that have plagued Tubby throughout his coaching career and I am fine with writing them off as anomalies (injury to Mbakwe and the attrition factor).

However, I do think it's a bit too lenient to argue that he has "only had 5 seasons". His first year in Minnesota was tied for his best finish in conference (6th) and I just do not believe it takes a basketball program over 5 years to be built. The program isn't on that improving trajectory.

I'm all for giving him another season but I am not in the camp that believes he doesn't deserve some blame. The attrition has to be partly his fault and the lack of depth has to be partly his fault. I'm willing to give it a little time to see if those situations were anomalies but if he has another season, 6 years is surely enough time to judge a basketball coach.
