Tubby: "I don't have any plans to do that (leave), but I'd never say never."

per Sid:

Asked if he had any interest in the South Carolina men's basketball coaching vacancy, as has been rumored, Gophers coach Tubby Smith said: "I'd be real happy here if we get some things worked out including a basketball building that would help recruiting, but as far as leaving here, I don't have any plans to do that, but I'd never say never."

Go Gophers!!

This is a non-story. If South Carolina puts together a package that is like 2.5 million a year + incentives or something like that, of course he'll take it.

Um, Tubby, statements like this can't do much for your recruiting either.

Sounds like Tubby trying to float his name out there as willing to talk to South Carolina because they haven't called IMO. Due to his age, I really don't see him being a hot candidate for any other job at this point in his career. I don't think his phone is ringing like he would like it or expect it too.

Just trying to make the right people nervous so they're more likely to fork over the money for the practice facility before it's too late. He's not going anywhere.

I really can't see South Carolina not going after Shaka Smart instead of Tubby. Unless Tubby has mentioned he would work for cheap or something.

If Smart were smart he would wait until an opening at a more prestigious program opened up.

Illinois would be a smart move in my opinion (no pun intended). Who knows how long he would have to wait for a Duke, UNC, Kentucky type school to come calling. Illinois has plenty of talent every year and plays in arguably the best conference.

Flip Saunders is waiting in the wings. He is already making connections with the Minnesota sophomore superstars. He has all the money he will ever need and lives here. The former Gopher of glory days would be a great fit IMO.

I love Tubby but Tubby has always said stuff like this and I don't think, at this point, it means anything. Between his age and lack of success here it is hard to believe another school would be dying to sign him.

As much as I hate two 6 and 12 seasons in a row I think this squad has some better results coming and I hope Tubby sticks it out.

This is the same thing he says every year. Unless he wants out simply for the sake of getting out, he's not going anywhere. 60-something coaches aren't in high demand. SC may consider him, but I doubt he's on the top of the list.

+1

They have spanking new practice facility, so he'd have no excuses, but I'm sure he would still throw his players under the bus if they didn't win.

Kind of like several GopherHolers throw Tubby under the bus?

I'm still a Tubby fan, but I've long lost that 'We're luck to have him feeling'.

The way he has turned on his player as a scapegoat for losses, the player he recruited and coached/mentored has been very disappointing.

Aside, Steve Lavin and Illinois boards indicate Illinois is going after Shaka Smart. It would make more sense for Smart to go to Illinois.

A 61 year old coach who at best as a 'average" record over the past 5 years is not a hot comodody.

One can only hope he leaves. No extension ought to give him all the reason he needs to leave, but who would take him?

Tubby is approaching the post season the same way Glen Mason used to. "I will always answer the phone". If Tubby wants to leave, then he should leave and someone that wants to be here should be hired. I understand keeping your options open, but making public comments indicating your willingness to leave is very unprofessional.

Miss St. and NC St...... maybe two years ago, but now he is in his 60's and his brand is damaged.

I had dinner last night with an Ilini alumnus. He tells me that Smart has a relationship with their current AD. He tells me they will come after him something fierce.

After watching him stubbornly play Hoffarber at the point last year, I think his brain is damaged.

Just curious, are you suggesting that he lie and say he'd never leave? Or, perhaps, just respond with a 'no comment'?

He was just answering a question honestly. Always keep your options open isn't a bad thing.

Smart would be smart to look at Illinois. That should be a top 3 B10 team every year. Should be better than Ohio St. Stability keeps kids from going to Purdue and Marquette on day one.
