troy calhoun to get gopher job on dec 1

another former Broncos assistant. I also could do without the triple option. Not a big fan, I would be very disappointed if this were true.

Yeah, he learned everything about the triple option when he was coaching in Denver and Houston.

Seriously every single option that gets brought up on this board is not good enough for the fans. Look we're not getting Harbaugh, Peterson, Leach, or Patterson. We are going to have to settle for another option.

Sumlin- 23-12 career record, probably would have won the league this year had his QB not gotten hurt.
Hoke- Led Ball State to a 12-1 record, has SDSU at 7-2 this year. Turned around two programs already.
Calhoun- OC in the NFL, 25-14 record at Air Force.

In my opinion, these three are all good candidate for the jobs. Calhoun is probably my favorite of the three. I like Sumlin but I do believe he'd need to bring in a solid DC with him. Hoke has proven he can turn around programs which is a positive. Are these guys deserving of an 8 year deal? I don't think so but that's not for me to decide.

But here's the thing.... Why not Leach? I get the fact that we are not going to get Patterson, Peterson, Harbaugh (Who from now on will be referred to as the big 3. JK) and I am fine with a guy like Hoke, Calhoun or even Navy's head coach. But when you got this guy who is a proven winner just sitting waiting for a job it seems quite obvious he should be the guy.

Obviously something is wrong with him though that no school has taken a chance on him this long.

what's the 411 on this alleged Leach incident in 2006?

First off, I don't disagree with you on Leach. My personal theory is that if Prexy B was going to be here for 3-5 more years he'd be more inclined to take a flyer on Leach. The biggest downside to BB (who obviously is making the decision) is that he doesn't want to leave a potential high maintenance headache for his successor)

But everyone keeps bringing up this alleged incident where Leach pizzed off some Minnesota wheels at some pregame event. I've yet to read an eyewitness account. I'm starting to smell urban legend. Although I know from experience that TX bravado and MN passive-aggressive are a bad combo. Especially when there's liquor involved. WTF did Leach say? Did he make a disparaging comment about Marc Trestman? That would upset our idiot boosters all right.

Absolutely, I agree 100% but I have come to realize that Leach is not an option. I wish he was but he obviously isn't going to be. We might as well move on and look at other candidates who realistically have a shot at getting the job.

Leach is a fruit cake. If you watched any of his Youtube videos you would understand why. He might be a good coach, but his style won't work with the AD the Pres and the players. I think he will be hard pressed to find another coaching job anytime soon.

Big names sound great but they won't come here and if they did I would wonder how long they would stay before moving on. I think Calhoun, Sumlin, the NAvy guy would be great options for the Gophers. These guys appear to be high charicater guys and not a sleazy salesman like Brewster was.

I am more than aware that Leach is a loon. His "Inner Pirate" banter and his instructions on how to swing your sword, I get it.

But we have talked about these candidates sooooooo much that no one is going to be good enough. People are starting to poke holes in Calhoun now that he may be a more realistic candidate than what we previously thought.

It seems to me that your home run candidates that would appease the GH boards would be the big 3. Beyond that is Leach who deserves another shot and his probably learned from his past

Zach Johnson should stick to playing golf on the PGA Tour. He and that entire Rivals board are a joke. What a great gig. You make $hit up and sniff around the jocks of some high school kids...and you get people to pay actual money to read the drivel you write.

I'm sticking to my prediction that Buck Rock and Roll Zumhoffe will be named head coach on November 20th and lead the Gophers to a 70-0 victory over Iowa.

Sounds a lot like the Hole except this site begs for it's money.

First off, I'm a huge Leach fan.

Why wouldn't we hire him? Liability.

Leach could be (and probably is) one of the top 10 coaches in the country. If that were the only issue, we hire him. But....he also brings a lot of baggage and a history. If Maturi would hire him, he has hired someone that has shown that he can be abusive, irresponsible, and volatile.

If you knowing hire someone like that, the liability for the university goes way up. After all, Maturi then knew what we were potentially getting into and hired him anyway. We (as a university) accepted that risk.

If that situation were to rise up again, in our litagious society, attorneys would have a field day. It would be open season on the university and we would not have a defense.

If the guy would agree to coach from a bubble and to never speak, I know the university would hire him tomorrow. I wish this weren't the case, but for once in my life, I agree with Maturi.

My thing on leach is this: There is NO WAY we could get a coach of his caliber under normal circumstances. No way. Now look at the shambles that our program is in. Go ahead and look around for a minute, read this board, look at the posts of some of the most die hard fans. If there was every a time to throw caution to the wind on a proven coach, with no record of NCAA violations and a tremendous record of graduating players, it is now. His resume is light years ahead of any other 'realistic candidate' we are hearing, just make the damn hire. 33 years as a season ticket holder, a lot of money donated to the program over that time, if we hire a second rate unproven coach I at least want to hear from Maturi's mouth that the reason they didn't hire the best coach available is because they were chickensh!t scared of it.

Good hire, but only if he brings Sodbuster Kenny Jay in to run the defense. Under Kenny's tutelage, we can be assured that the defense will be very capable.

Frankly, I'd be disappointed - a third year coach. hardly a "Tubby hire." It's a leap in the dark, a risk. The service academies have a very different recruiting situation, not nearly as demanding. Calhoun does look a bit better on defense than Sumlin, but this is far from a killshot. Not saying he wouldn't turn out okay in time, but he'd be far down my list, along with most of the 2-4 year rookies. I'd go for Tommy Bowden in a heartbeat, or Leach, or Fulmer. Harbaugh would be my dream choice, Patterson second, Richt third.

I agree Calhoun would be a bigger risk than some other candidates. Being Brewster couldn't seem to keep a consistent staff on board, whoever they hire should be someone who can and has been able to keep good coordinators around for a few years.

My biggest fear with Calhoun is his ability to "handle" BCS quality athletes and some of the baggage they bring to a team. At Air Force he is dealing with kids that are used to strict rules and tend to follow them to a T. This will not be the case at Minnesota. If he was named the coach, I could see a few more kids transferring than normal at the end of the year.

Imagine it. Third and 6, Gopher defense on the field getting fired up. 50000 people chanting "rock and roll...rock and roll". Gives me chills just thinking about it.

He probably doesn't have a lot of time to work on the site because of his PGA Tour Career. I'm actually amazed he still has time to run the site at all - that is impessive.

Now that I think of it, I saw on Hawkeye Football w/Kirk Ferentz a couple weeks ago that Zach was an invited guest of the Hawkeyes to attend some of their fall practices. The Cedar Rapids native seemed like a pretty die-hard Hawk fan despite attending Drake. I'm starting to think now that GI is really a Hawkeye site in disguise.

I bet there would be quite a party in Hamburg. I've seen Jumpin Jim Brunzell at a few games, perhaps he can work with the kicking game.

What?

Yeah, he learned everything about the triple option when he was coaching in Denver and Houston.

Think before you post replies. The Broncos assistant bit was a "joke" not sure how that slipped past you. Nowhere I mention that he learned 3O in Denver. Merely stating that I do not like that particular O. Also stating I would be disappointed with this particular hire my reasons, 4 years college head coach, 4 years NFL assistant, 14 years as college assistant at primarily "small time" colleges. I would just like to see a better qualified hire. I may be wrong and he may be the best thing since sliced bread. I just wouldn't like the hire.
