per STrib's interview with Brown:

*Who is the most conditioned player on the team right now? Mathieu again, Brown said. A little more than a week ago, he gave the players a spontaneous mile test. Mathieu casually posted a five-minute mile. "Without practicing," Brown said. "I mean, that's moving ... and he wasn't even throwing up, he could have gone faster."

*The biggest surprise so far in Brown's eyes? That distinction belongs to Daquein McNeil. The sophomore, who last year gained valuable spot minutes and became something of a defensive specialist, has put on about 10 to 12 pounds, Brown said, while integrating smoothly and working extremely hard. "His strength, what he lifts per pound, body weight, he's got a big upside," Brown said. "And he's shown it. He's gotten very strong ... rightfully or wrongfully, you have these preconceived ideas of who they are and what their levels are, and this kid has just been a really pleasant surprise. He's ahead in a lot of the areas I thought he would struggle."

Go Gophers!!

A-Ray is kicking out a lot of content, it feels like it was one interview done a couple weeks back (maybe with fill-in quotes here and there), but at this time of year it is really nice to have.

A 5-minute mile isn't anything special for an elite athlete. I ran close to a 5-minute mile in HS, and I am not even remotely close to the periphery of fast. Marathoners run sub-5 minute miles and do it consecutively for over 2 hours straight.

I imagined the Angry Cat when I read your post.

Hand or machine timed?

A 5 minute mile is pretty good for an off season basketball player. They have completely different body types and muscle make-up than someone built to run distances. They always talked about Rodney running 5 minute miles too, it's a pretty good benchmark for endurance.

Nope, not even a little angry. Not sure what came across as "angry" from my post.

My bad, dpodoll. Nothing angry at all. For whatever reason, that cat meme popped into my head when I read it. I think it's Grumpy Cat. All good.

Silly

One of your dumber posts; and that's saying something.

What's a periphery?

Basketball players are quick-twitch muscle athletes and running a mile in 5 minutes is a very good time for them. Their size also works against them when running distance. Elite marathon runners are a completely different animal.

5 minute miles for people that aren't trained running long distances is definitely a signal the person is in good shape.

I trust Shaun Brown. He sounded impressed with Dre's 5 minute mile. I could care less what high school runners do...I'll trust the word of a professional strength and conditioning coach in the BIG.

Not typically unless you are talking about Olympic-level male marathoners. A marathon is 26.21875 miles so 5 minute miles would put you at about 2 hours, 11 minutes. The men's record is like 2 h, 3 m and the women's is like 2 h, 15 m.

Hell, I can walk 4 blocks under those times.

For the life of me I do not know why we and the coaching staff aren't listening to dpo. If the Gopher Basketball team is to find and develop elite athletes we need to get out of Western Africa and move over to Ethiopia and Kenya and hit the recruiting trail hard on the East side!

Runners! By God, find me some runners!
