Transfer Portal

Note: Just reposting what I posted on Tuesday now that its official.

Celeste Taylor from Duke committed to Ohio State during her visit last weekend and made it public today. That is a massive addition for a program that's looking to get over the hump and reach the Final Four.

ACC DPOY, Duke's leading scorer this season, Naismith DPOY Finalist (top 4 defensive player in the nation), and projected late 1st rd pick had she declared for the 2023 WNBA draft.

Her and Jacy Sheldon are going to wreak absolute havoc in that press. Going to make it a living hell for other teams in terms of ball security. I can easily see this team forcing close to 20 T/Os a game next season.
don't forget about Madison Greene as well.. that guard rotation is going to be something else..

Including Sophie Hart, four players left North Carolina State including two centers and now standout guard Diamond Johnson.

Forward Jakia Brown-Turner is transferring to Maryland and center Camille Hobby is going to Illinois. The Wolfpack went 20-12 this past season, losing 64-63 in the first round of the NCAA tournament to Princeton.

Johnson was the leading scorer for NC State (12.3 points per game) but was limited to 22 games because of an ankle injury. She last played Feb. 16, missing the ACC and NCAA tournaments.

Johnson was the sixth-ranked recruit in the ESPN HoopGurlz top 100 for 2020, behind Paige Bueckers (UConn), Angel Reese (LSU), Cameron Brink (Stanford), Caitlin Clark (Iowa) and Kamilla Cardoso (South Carolina).

DII Truman State guard Hannah Belanger signs with Iowa State

She’s coming off her best season yet, averaging a team-high 21.3 points per game while shooting 47% from 3-point range. She’s a career 40% shooter from beyond the arc.

Googled Ivory Finley and it looks like she signed with Utah State.

I’m wondering if the transfer portal thing will slow down a bit in another year or so. Rationale is that next year’s senior class will be the last class that has the COVID year of eligibility.

Also, so many players have transferred once already, and without that Covid year, we won’t have as many eligible for free grad transfers. Thus, if they wanted to transfer a second time, they would have to sit a year.

Any they'll realize how many people don't find a fit in portal and learn that being a role player is better than being out of a scholarship and the sport

Iowa State signs another transfer portal player. This one a center.

I think huge get is exaggerated but is a get.

Upon further review, maybe she almost is a "huge get." Hornets are not a Power 5 school. She actually worked her way up from Iowa Western Community College. Great story.

"She's spent the last two seasons at Sacramento State. Natobou, the 2021-22 Big Sky Conference Newcomer of the Year, averaged 15.3 points and 10.1 rebounds per game in her two seasons with the Hornets."

After losing Haley Van Lith, Louisville strikes gold in the transfer portal, including Kiki Jefferson.

Kennedi Myles of Marquette was signed to Eastern Michigan, announced on the 17th, which was before this post was made on the 20th.

6' 3" Michigan State senior post player Taiyier Parks started and was a decent rebounder. She would be an ideal fit for the rotation post role. Her 2022-23 stats from ESPN:

She had 11 rebounds against the Gophers in the Big Ten tournament when the Gophers looked outcoached and bounced from the tournament in their own town in basically a play in round. Surely the Gophers will put forth a much better performance next time when Minnesota hosts the tournament a second year in a row.

Top 20 transfer players per contributed article at 247Sports:

Iowa States's Lexi Donarski has visits with conference rival Indiana -- Yikes! -- and North Carolina.

Tea leaves still suggesting Van Lith to defending champion LSU -- I meant "repeat" champion.

This has been mentioned at GH already: Duke's Celeste Taylor heads to conference rival Ohio State -- *KA...BOOM*!

Coach Dawn Plitzuweit has six days, April 30, to land players from the Transfer Portal.

Like last year, it looks like the Gophers can't land transfer portal players. Last year it was so bad the team had to sign walk-on players to fill enough roster spots to get by. I hope this year is not that bad again.

The problem was that most the team left via the transfer portal lasts year leaving only 3 returning veterans, 2 who barely ever played due to injuries. Potential new transfer players surely looked at that, a team with just 3 players, and then went elsewhere.

The one position the team urgently needs now is another post/center player. The team lost Micheaux and Oberg (a transfer portal center from last year who wasn't very good). Sure, Czinano or Holloway could play there if needed but both are 6' 0".

Losing out on wing/shooting guard players is unfortunate but not as "must" since the team could play some of the young players with no experience. The team has enough players there; we just don't know what they can do. I think the system Coach P runs needs decent players there, shooting from the perimeter and strong defenders.

For point guard behind Battle, the team lost Borowicz. It would be nice to have a veteran ball handler there and as maybe as a sixth man role. Sure, Braun and others could bring the ball up if needed. I don't think freshmen should be thrown into that role too soon.

It definitely looks like this team needs to be good at recruiting locally to bring in talent. Unfortunately all the top 2024's from Minnesota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, and Michigan have already declared their schools and none picked Minnesota. Illinois has a couple uncommitted players.

This team is crippled as far as attracting talent.

If it wasn't for GG following Coach P to Minnesota, the Gophers would have not a single ranked player coming in this year. Sure, the others coming in look promising. We just don't know what to expect or how long until they are ready.

The promise of the Fab Four masks a team that looks crippled to me.

Once they start winning then that will correct. Gophers are not going to be another 4 conference win team next season like they were this year.

To help in that cause, it would help a lot if they could get two good players from the transfer portal that could help. Not walk-ons.

OK, one. Hopefully one. At this point I would say getting one good player would be progress. Next year should be better.

Well this post didn't add anything new. Just saying it hasn't been a good transfer portal season for the second year in a row now. The sooner this team creates distance from the 4 win conference season and most the team leaving last season, the better.

The transfer portal so far has been a zero.

I would have liked to see some players from the portal commit to the Gophers but i’m not surprised they didn’t. New head coach and a team coming off a bad season. If the team gels and improves under Coach P, look for players wanting to come in after next season, imo.

Why is there so much conflicting information here on when the portal closes? You’d think it would be easy to obtain definitive information on this. NCAA must be doing a poor job of communicating (no surprise).

Found this that explains there is some windows within the window. This wiggleroom can be dictated by conference:

The deadline for college basketball players to enter the transfer portal varies depending on the division level and the specific conference. In NCAA Division I, for example, the deadline for men's basketball players to enter the transfer portal for the 2022-2023 season is May 1, 2023. However, this deadline can vary by conference or by individual school, so it's always best to check with the NCAA or your school's athletic department for the most up-to-date information. It's also worth noting that while there may be a deadline for entering the transfer portal, there is no deadline for actually transferring to a new school.

Schools or conferences can have different deadlines for entering the transfer portal because they are not set by the NCAA or any governing body. Instead, schools and conferences can set their own policies and deadlines for transferring student-athletes.
In some cases, schools or conferences may have earlier deadlines than the NCAA's deadline of May 1st for men's basketball. This can be due to a variety of reasons, such as wanting to allow more time for the recruitment process, or wanting to have a clearer picture of their roster for the upcoming season. In other cases, schools or conferences may have later deadlines than the NCAA's deadline, as they want to give student-athletes more time to make a decision or to accommodate for individual circumstances.
It's important to note that while schools or conferences may have different deadlines for entering the transfer portal, they still need to comply with NCAA rules and regulations regarding transfers, such as obtaining a release from the previous school and fulfilling academic requirements.

The ultimate text from the NCAA describing the windows are here:

Best I could find. Confusion is that it's different for every sport.

How long is it open?

Strictly speaking, the portal never closes. But the NCAA in 2022 added transfer windows to limit when athletes can enter.
Players have 60 days in which they can have their names added. For winter sports, that's a single 60-day period. Basketball and hockey have it starting the day following the NCAA Tournament selection shows.

Fall and spring sports have a 45-day period after their regular season plus a 15-day period in the opposite season. Football Bowl Subdivision players could enter from Dec. 5, 2022, through Jan. 18, 2023, and again from April 15 through April 30.

A calendar by sport is available here.

A midseason coaching change also opens an immediate 30-day window for players from that team to enter the transfer portal.

Thanks for all the responses. Unless the Big Ten or Minnesota doesn’t follow these guidelines, Dawn has until May 11 to recruit her own roster to prevent departures via the portal, then she has as long as she wants to sign someone out of the portal.
