Transfer Portal

They have a pretty stacked recruiting class coming in (3 players in the HoopGurlz top 60), also similar to the Whalen exodus. I think it's still kind of difficult to tell what the new "normal" is for a program and roster turnover now. Arizona is seemingly churning the entire roster every season now but still getting it

Exactly. Look @ MD who lost 5 players including superstar Angel Reese and big time scorers Ashley Owusu and Mimi Collins. They were back to the Elite 8.

FYI transfer portal news -- not suggesting for Minnesota.

Both tall guards, the Maryland style.

Ava Sciolla looks like she wouldn't get minutes at Maryland. She actually would be interesting for Minnesota as a rotation player like when Battle is taking a rest break. She's a 6' point guard.

March 30 — Maryland’s Ava Sciolla, Mila Reynolds enter portal

Isis Beh from Coach P's former team West Virginia entered the transfer portal. She's a 6' 3" forward.

She was not a starter. She played around 10 minutes per game and averaged 2.1 rebounds a game, 3.1 points, and a .522 field goal shooting percentage (short range). Skimming articles it seems she was defensive minded.

As a freshman at UNLV, "2020 Mountain West Conference All-Freshman Team. Averaged 3.6 points, 4.0 rebound, 0.9 assists, 0.3 blocks and 0.6 steals per game as a freshman. Also shot 52.9% (46-87) from the field and averaged 20.8 minutes in 30 games played, including one start."

Sounds like a good post rotation/relief player.

Sounds like a sit out transfer.

"Lady Vols basketball has hit transfer portal gold for the second season in a row. This time it’s the final piece of the puzzle for next year's roster: an elite point guard.

Belmont transfer Destinee Wells announced Thursday that she has committed to Tennessee. The 5-foot-6 junior point guard visited Knoxville on Wednesday.

In Belmont’s first season in the Missouri Valley Conference, Wells led the team in scoring and assists and earned All-MVC First Team and MVC All-Tournament team honors. She had 35 points and five assists in Belmont's first-round loss to Ball State in the WNIT on March 16."

Former Gopher Jasmine Powell plays point guard for Tennessee.

Why players are leaving Iowa State explained.

Also, IS has top recruits coming in that may have something to do with it for some of them.

Gophers do not need a starting big. But here are some bigs in the portal for perhaps rotation minutes:

"And for those wanting another big, here are the ones listed in the portal as of today:

Arizona - Lauren Ware 6-5 Jr center
Boston College - Ally Carman 6-5 Fr center
Furman – Karie Whitaker 6-5 So center
Mercer – Detavia Salter 6-3 Fr forward/center
Michigan State – Brooklyn Rewers 6-4 So center
Miss State – Charlotte Kohl 6-5 Fr center
Oral Roberts – Elena Lijo 6-5 Fr Center
Princeton – Kira Emsbo 6-5 Sr center
Purdue – Lilly Stoddard 6-5 Fr forward/center
Sacramento State – Isnelle Natabou 6-5 Jr center, 6-4 Tautinei Puaina Jr forward
Samford – Sussy Ngulefac 6-3 So center

This really feels like this is turning into free agency for the top women players that aren't on the elite teams. So, you basically get your stock high enough and then you shop your skills to one of the top programs you feel has at least a chance at a Final Four.
I think all these players watched the LSU & Iowa Final Four and they see final ratings where ESPN broke a record and had 9.9M viewers and the exposure (NIL) that brings. Now they assess whether their program has any chance to reach that level. If not, why should they stick around. With NIL available to the top women, this really is a business now.

I was thinking the same thing and this means the rich will get richer.

Ashley Owusu, a former All-Big Ten player at Maryland, is in the transfer portal after playing one season at Virginia Tech, the program confirmed to ESPN on Tuesday... But Owusu saw a minimal role in Blacksburg, appearing in 17 games and averaging 5.1 points in 15.1 minutes.

There appeared to be a fraught relationship between Owusu and her teammates. Following Virginia Tech's loss to the Tigers in the national semifinal, guard Kayana Traylor responded to a tweet asking why Owusu wasn't on the bench after halftime with "hmm idk check the lsu bench," a tweet that was liked or retweeted by several other Hokies players.

The school said at the time that Owusu hadn't been feeling well and so did not return to the court after the break.

"Bollin, a member of head coach Kara Lawson’s first full recruiting class, was the 33rd-ranked player in the 2022 class. The four-star recruit missed her final two high-school seasons as she rehabbed from a knee injury.

Due to the depth at the center position, junior Kennedy Brown and graduate student Mia Heide received most of the playing time. Bollin played in limited minutes during her season with the Blue Devils. The Raynham, Mass., native saw action in eight games, averaging 5.1 minutes and 2.4 points per game."

Gophers could use a rotation/relief center. I doubt a once-high ranked prospect who went to east coast Duke would do that but maybe.

The Oregon women’s basketball team is losing a second starting guard.

Te-Hina Paopao has entered the transfer portal, according to a source with knowledge of the matter.

Paopao, a third-year sophomore, averaged 13.1 points, a career-high 4.2 rebounds and 3.3 assists for the Ducks this season. She has two years of eligibility remaining.

A pair of starters and in-state players highlighted the early transfer portal departures for the Oklahoma State women’s basketball team.

Coming off a 21-win season and NCAA Tournament appearance, coach Jacie Hoyt’s program has lost four players to the portal so far, led by Taylen Collins and Lexy Keys.

I would say that the Gophers simply retaining key players would be a big win for Minnesota. A teams adds by not losing.

There are so many names in the portal.

Oregon forward Sedona Prince has rescinded her name from inclusion in the 2023 WNBA Draft pool, per a list released by the league Thursday, and has entered the transfer portal, The Athletic has learned. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The 6-foot-7 Prince joined Oregon in 2019 after redshirting her freshman year at Texas after suffering a broken leg. She sat out the 2019-20 season after transferring, then played in 2020-21 and 2021-22.
  • Prince, 22, opted into another season with the Ducks as a master’s student but missed the 2022-23 season after undergoing surgery on a torn ligament in her elbow. She indicated at the time she planned to pursue a professional career.
  • Prince has averaged 9.7 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game in her college career, shooting 54.3 percent from the field.

I love the way this article starts:

"The shocking news coming out of the Oregon Ducks women’s basketball program doesn’t stop.

Sedona Prince, who missed the entire 2022-23 season to an elbow injury, has withdrawn her name from the WNBA draft and will enter the transfer portal instead, per a report from The Athletic."

Every year Maryland reloads. Every year Maryland is going to win in the NCAA tournament. Not quite to the Final Four but every year fans get March Madness action.

Brown-Turner was a 2021 all-ACC first team selection, averaging 10.3 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game throughout her time in NC State. She famously scored 20 points in NC State's epic double-overtime matchup versus UConn in the 2022 NCAA tournament.

The rich get richer.

Gakdeng, from Lanham, Md., started for the Eagles the past two seasons, averaging 11.3 points and 6.5 rebounds last season, both team-highs, while shooting 57.8% from the floor. She had three double-doubles last season and leaves BC as its second all-time leading shot blocker with 131.

Too many good players to keep track of in the portal.

Again, if the Gophers can retain what they have, that's a big win.

Sedona will be good to get into SEC and have someone who can outmuscle LSU/SC inside
